Step 1, lesson 2 transcript

Pat Flynn: The audio quality of your podcast is extremely, extremely important. You could
have the best content in the world, the most helpful information. Unless it sounds great,
which is the norm now, people are not going to listen to your show. I want to set you up for
success.

Now, you might have microphones already available to you, some on your earbuds that you
might have. Your computer probably has a built-in microphone, or you might even have
other pieces of equipment that could work to get a show up and running, and that’s fine,
but I want to set you up for success and give you a piece of equipment that you could use at
a very cheap price. It’s going to get you some great quality audio. Before any of that, I want
to play a couple audio files for you, and I want you to tell me which one of these two audio
files sounds better to you.

Hey, this is Pat Flynn, and welcome to The Smart Passive Income Podcast. Thank you so
much for being here.

Hey, this is Pat Flynn, and welcome to The Smart Passive Income Podcast. Thank you so
much for being here.

Which one sounded better to you, audio test number one or audio test number two?
Hopefully, you said audio test number two, and that one was recorded with a microphone
that sounds very much like a professional podcasting mic but it actually wasn’t. It wasn’t
recorded with a mic that was between $300 and $1,000. It was recorded with a mic that
was only $70, and it’s this mic here. It’s called the ATR 2100. ATR 2100 from a company
called Audio Technica.

Now, this piece of equipment and the other pieces of equipment that I’m going to share
with you . . . which, by the end of this video, I want you to have these ordered so that they’re
actually coming in and then you can consume more videos in this module. All the links
are in the side here for you, so you don’t have to worry about taking notes right now. All
the links for all this equipment is on the side. This microphone runs about 70 bucks. All
the other equipment runs about 50 to 70 bucks as well, so you’ll spend less than a $150 for
all these things. For a great-sounding show, that is an extremely cheap price because you
could go crazy with what you spend your money on, but I’m trying to make it cheap and
easy for you.

All the links are available to you, but I’m going to walk you through why this mic actually
is great. Not just because it sounds great, but because it’s easy to use and it plugs in via
USB. Instead of getting a mixer board or an amplifier, all these other things that these XLR
connection podcasting mics need, all you need is a computer to hook this up to and it
sounds fantastic. That’s the first piece of equipment.

The second piece of equipment that you could use that I recommend is getting a shock
mount. This attaches to your microphone, which then attaches to your stand. What this does
is it actually has like a bunch of rubber bands on it essentially that absorb any vibrations
and sounds that you don’t want getting into your microphone. That’s what that shock mount
is for. Then there’s, of course, the arm that you can use to clamp onto your desk, which is
great because that way you can just move your mic in and out really easily. No worries. You
can get it out of the way. Now, the ATR 2100 does come with a stand if you want to use that
and just kind of have it be there right in front of you, but I like having the mic kind of on an
arm so you can kind of move it out of the way.

Then finally, a couple things. You’re going to need a longer sort of USB cord to connect to
this just so you have a little bit more wiggle room. Then finally, this is really important. This
is called, well, this is the Dragonpad pop filter. Now, what pop filters do is it sort of attaches
to your microphone and then puts a screen right in front of the mic, so that when you say B
words and P words, typically if you didn’t have that, it would make a really loud noise and
it would just distort the audio. That absorbs those B and P sounds that are very airy. That’s
a great thing to have too.

Like I said, all those links are in the side for you. Your action item is to get your equipment
ordered if you don’t have equipment already and then move onto the next video. We’ll have
those be shipped in while you consume the rest of the content, and then we’ll start actually
hooking those things up and putting them together later. I’ll also be sharing with you later
some software that you’ll be using too, but I’m going to save that for later. For now, just get
your audio equipment ordered and click continue below.
