Review of the Previous Module

In the previous module, you have learned that slope of a linear equation can
be determined using the two given points, graphs and its equation itself.

Presentation of the New Lesson

A linear equation is an equation in two variables which can be written in two
forms: Standard Form: ax + by = c, where a, b and c ∈ ℜ , a and b not both; and
Slope-Intercept Form: y = mx + b, where m is the slope and b is the y-
intercept. In the form y = mx + b, y is the dependent variable, x is the independent
variable and m and b are constants.
Do the series of activities to transform the equation.

ACTIVITY: 5
“NAME and COMPLETE IT”
Complete the table below by simply writing your own examples of linear
equation in two variables. Then, find its slope, y-intercept and y in terms of x,
the first two are done for you.

What to Process

What you did in the previous section will help you better understand the
lesson. Here, you will concentrate on answering the process questions
based from the previous activity

ANALYSIS:
Based on the previous activity, answer the following questions and
write your answer in the box.
1. From each equation, what are the coefficients of the variables and
the constant of the equation?

2. What is the rule of these coefficients and constant of equation in

finding the slope and the y- intercept?

3. How do the slope and y- intercept of each equation relate to the

numbers in the last column in the table (y in terms of x)?

4. Is it possible to rewrite the equations in standard form to slope-

intercept form? How?

What to Understand

6
Your goal in this section is to correct misconceptions that might have
developed and to firm-up your understanding on rewriting a linear equation
ax + by = c in slope-intercept form y= mx + b and vice versa.
ABSTRACTION:
The above activity gave you the idea about the rule of coefficients and
the constant in finding the slope and y-intercept of the equation. Your knowledge on
finding the slope and y-intercept will be utilized in rewriting the linear equation
ax + by = c into the form y = mx + b.

The standard form of linear equation is ax + by = c, where a, b and c ∈ ℜ , a

and b not both 0 while the slope- intercept form is y = mx + b.
You should realize that the slope is the coefficient of x and the y- intercept is
the constant.
Study the illustrative examples:

Example 1: Rewrite the equation 2x + y = 5 in the form y = mx + b. Then,

determine its slope and y-intercept.

Solution:
The given equation is 2x + y = 5. By Addition Property of Equality, add
-2x to the left and right sides of the equation to eliminate 2x at the left side of
the equation,
-2x + y + (-2x) = 5 + (-2x)
Thus, y = -2x + 5.

Therefore, the slope of the equation is -2 and the y-intercept is 5.

Example 2. Rewrite the equation 3x - 5y = 10 in the form y = mx + b.

Then, determine its slope and y-intercept.

Solution:
The given equation is 3x - 5y = 10. By Addition Property of Equality,
add (-3x) to the left and right sides of the equation to eliminate 3x at the left
side of the equation,
3x - 5y + (-3x) = 10 + (-3x)
-5y = -3x + 10, then multiply (-1/5) to both sides of the
equation to eliminate (-5), the coefficient of ,
1 1
− (−5 y)=− (−3 x+10 )
5 5
3
x−2
Thus, y= 5

7
3
The slope is 5 and the y-intercept is -2.

1
Example 3. Rewrite the equation y = x+3 in the form ax + by = c.
2
Solution:
1
The given equation is y = 2 x + 3. Multiply (2) to the left and right sides of
the equation, to eliminate 2, the denominator of ‘x’ and to make the coefficient of x a
whole number.
1
2(y) = 2 ( 2 x + 3)
Then it will become, 2y = x + 6 . Add (-x) to both sides of the equation to
eliminate x at the right side, 2y + (-x) = x + 6 + (-x),
It will become -x + 2y = 6 , multiply both sides by (-1) to make ‘x”
positive. (-1) (-x + 2y) = (-1) 6
Then, x – 2y = -6

5 3
y= x +
Example 4. Rewrite the equation 4 8 in the form ax + by =
Solution:
5 3
x+
The given equation is y = 4 8 .
Multiply (8) to the left and right sides of the equation, to make the coefficients
5 3
x+ )
whole number 8(y) = 8 ( 4 8
8y = 10x + 3. Add (-10x) to both sides of the equation to
eliminate 10x at the right, (-10x) + 8y = 10x + 3 + (-10x),
It will become, -10x + 8y = 3 , multiply both sides by (-1) to make
‘x’ positive. (-1) (-10x + 8y) = (-1) 3
Then, 10x – 8y = -3

Enrichment:
Analyze the given problem and answer the questions that follow:

Anna transforms the equation y = x + 3 into the form ax + by = c. Her solution

is shown below:
The given equation is y = x + 3. By addition property of equality
y +(-x) = x+ (-x) + 3
y–x=0+3
-x - y = -3. By multiplication of (-1) to both sides of the 9
equation, then x - y = -3.

2. If you were Anna, what revision you would do make it
correct?
