018-003 Lubricating Oil Recommendations and
Specifications
General Information
Pipeline Gas Engines
The use of high quality engine lubricating oils combined with appropriate oil drain and
filter change intervals are a critical factor in maintaining engine performance,
reliability, and durability.
Cummins Inc. recommends the use of high quality SAE 40 heavy duty engine oil for
natural gas engines. The use of the "Premium Grade - Long Change Interval" oils are
strongly recommended.
CAUTION
A Suphated Ash limit of 0.60 percent has been placed on all stationary engine
lubricating oil recommended for use in Cummins® High Horsepower Natural Gas
Lean-Burn engines. Higher ash oil can cause valve and/or piston damage and lead
to excessive oil consumption and degradation of any exhaust aftertreatment
system catalyst.
Use the following Cummins® service bulletin for further details and discussion of
engine lubricating oil for Cummins® engines. Reference the Cummins® Engine Oil
Recommendations, Bulletin 3810340.
For further information on approved oils, contact a Cummins® Distributor or
Cummins® Energy Solutions Business.

Oil Drain Intervals
Cummins Inc. bases the oil drain specifications on duty cycle and oil contamination.
This contamination occurs in all engines, at varying rates, regardless of design.
Maintaining the correct oil and filter change interval is a vital factor in preserving the
integrity of an engine. Oil filters must be changed whenever the engine oil is
changed.
Cummins Inc. strongly recommends regular oil sampling and analysis. If regular oil
analysis is not performed, then the oil change interval is reduced and oil analysis
must be carried out immediately prior to the oil change to determine that the oil
contamination was within acceptable limits at the time of the oil change.

NOTE: The oil filter change interval may be different from the lubricating oil
change intervals shown above. Oil filters must be changed as specified with
the recommendations shown in the Maintenance Schedule. Refer to Procedure
102-002 in Section 2.
Special “break-in” engine lubricating oils are not recommended for new or rebuilt
Cummins® engines. Use the same type of oil during the “break-in” as that which is
used in normal operation.
Additional information regarding lubricating oil availability throughout the world is
available in the E.M.A. Lubricating Oils Data Book for Heavy Duty Automotive and
Industrial Engines. The data book can be ordered from the Engine Manufacturers
Association, Two North LaSalle Street, Chicago, IL U.S.A. 60602. The telephone
number is: (312) 827-8735.
Oil Analysis Guidelines
NOTE: These recommendations apply only to High Horsepower Lean Burn
Natural Gas engines. The High Horsepower Diesel engine recommendations
are different. Reference to Cummins® Engine Oil and Oil Analysis
Recommendations, Bulletin 3810340.
Regular oil analysis forms a very important part of the engine's service and
maintenance regimen. The engine oil change intervals quoted are maximum oil
change intervals and are subject to the oil analysis results.
The variation in oil brands, base stocks, additive packages, gas quality, climate
conditions, generator set load factors, engine condition, and other influences
necessitate the use of oil analysis to minimize life cycle cost and maximize engine
reliability.
The intervals, methods, and limits described below are based on operating
experience, oil supplier guidelines, oil analysis laboratory guidelines, and other data
sources. Specific site experience and the use of more advanced analysis techniques
may allow scope for adjustments to the recommendations below. However, any
change must be approved through Cummins Inc. before being implemented.

Oil Sample Frequency
Pipeline Gas Engines
Until the oil change interval is established, the oil analysis frequency should be at a
maximum of each 250 operating hours or 6 months, whichever occurs first. Once the
oil change interval has been established, the analysis frequency can be extended to a
maximum of 20 percent of the change interval, or 6 months, whichever occurs first.
NOTE: Where regular oil analysis is not performed, the oil change interval
published in the appropriate engine Operation and Maintenance Manual must
be reduced by 50 percent.
NOTE: Where regular oil analysis is not performed, an "end of oil life" analysis
must be carried out immediately prior to each oil change to determine that the
oil was within the limits and still fit for use.
Oil Sample Baseline
As key elements of the oil analysis are based on a change from fresh oil, it is
essential that a baseline fresh oil sample is first established. This must be from the
same oil supplier, oil grade, and source used in the engine and analyzed by the
analysis laboratory chosen for the "used oil analysis." This baseline should normally
be managed between the oil supplier and the analysis laboratory, but this should not
be presumed. Fresh oil sample analysis must be repeated for any oil formulation or
analysis laboratory change.
Oil Sampling
The used oil sample taken for analysis must be representative of the oil in the
engine. Use the following guidelines when collecting used oil samples:
Bring the engine up to normal operating temperature prior to sampling. This will
make sure the representative contaminant levels are in the sample.
Take the used oil sample before adding any fresh oil to the engine.
Take the used oil sample either directly from the sump or from a suitable
sample point before the oil filters.
Always collect the oil in a dry, clean container and collect a minimum of 0.125
liter [4.2 oz] of oil.

The following information must also be supplied:
Engine make, type, and serial number.
Type of use, duty cycle, and fuel type.
Sample date and sample conditions (intermediate, at oil change, etc.).
Engine oils, oil hours, hours since last analysis, and oil top-up since last
analysis.
Oil manufacturer, type, and viscosity.
NOTE: Oil manufacturers/suppliers can usually provide suitable oil analysis
kits.
Definitions
There are two limit definitions.
Caution Limit
An indication that the engine oil is approaching "end of life" is receiving a report
that contains a "Warning". The oil must be changed at the earliest opportunity
in order to avoid the oil condition progressing to the Condemn Limit.
Condemning Limit
When receiving an analysis report that indicates the engine oil has reached its
"end of life", this level must not be exceeded. Continued operation beyond the
Condemning Limit can cause serious engine damage.

NOTE: * - Where oil analysis confirms the source of Copper (Cu) and Iron (Fe) is
not bearing related, the condemning limits may be increased to 60 ppm for
Copper (Cu) and 80 ppm for Iron (Fe).
NOTE: ** - Calcium (Ca), Zinc (Zn), Phosphorous (P), and Boron (B) are used in
the oil additives packages for protection against acid build-up and wear. The
levels do vary between oil suppliers and may not be published. It is
recommended to seek advice on Caution and Condemning Limits for these
elements based on a change from the fresh oil sample and agreed to with the
oil supplier.
