Dimension about Words in the Language

 Do you think that using Politically Correct words and Slang Words can be an avenue for
us English teacher to help our learners to help our pupils/students to acquire the
learnings in our classroom? How are you going to use it since we are in “New Normal
Education?

In a classroom setting, politically correct words and slang words can be an advantage

and disadvantage in learning inside the classroom.

These two terms became an advantage when these are used appropriately and utilized

accordingly. As an example, when the teacher is familiar and knowledgeable of the slang

vocabulary of the students, he/she can use it as a drive or motivation to get the attention of the

students. The students will be motivated to listen because they know that their teacher relates to

them. Another is that, it can be used in activities inside the classroom like group “Charot” and

group “Chenes”. It would be nice for the students to hear it for them to be alive inside the

classroom. Moreover, using politically correct words can be an advantage when the people

inside the classroom, especially the teachers and students, wanted to avoid and diminish

misunderstandings and highlighting of difference of the minor groups or minority people inside

the classroom. Therefore, it can help students to give or share their idea without wanting to

offend other students. This is most likely to be used in reportings, discussions and debate that

happened inside the classroom.

On the other hand, politically correct words and slang words can be a disadvantage in a

sense that it would be overused and abused. Politically correct words can be used as sarcasm

and can also be used to ridicule other students. it can also be viewed as a power in terms that

those people who utilize politically correct words are viewed to be honest, true and brave while

the minority person or group are seen as weak, intolerant and also very sensitive. While abuse

in using the slang words inside the classroom can be misleading to the vocabulary of the

students. it could also bring confusion to them.

 In the “New Normal Education”, wherein most of the discussion will be made through

technological and modular approach, using slang words and politically correct words will be

made through conversations like messages, chats, and video conferencing. As the students are

very exposed to technology where slang words and politically correct words are widely used,

they will be more knowledgeable about it. As a teacher, we should be familiarizing ourselves

about that too. We can use that to relate to the students and make them comfortable when

learning. We all know that the New Norman Education is a big challenge to everyone especially

to the students so we need to make them forget about the stress and make them comfortable

while learning from us.
