There are four important types of heart disease'

pressure.

Degenerative heart disease, commonly known as


ischaemicheart disease,is the causeof heart attacks'and

In the 20th century, almost all the countries once


ruled by some Western nations achievedtheir freedom.
But most of them still have not been able to use that
freedom to secure democracy. India is a brilliant
exception. Our people are lree to choose their
representatives and our Press is free to criticise our
rulers.

Even then, often, our choice is determined at


times by caste, community and religion. Glamour and
money also play a greater role than idealism.We must
overcome such defects in the system.

We must remember that democracy can become


a worthy offering to Mother India, only when those
who have been elected dedicate themselves to the
welfare of the nation.

Mumbai's pavements are normally quiet around
6 AM, but if you chance on a stretch along the
sea-facingCarter Road in Bandra, Mumbai, you will find
it is bustling. Nearly three dozen bright-faced,
well-scrubbedchildren seated on mats spread on the
pavement are reciting the alphabet, chanting the
multiplication tables and scribbling away squeakily on
their slates. Keeping a fond but sharp eye over the
hubbub is the founder of this unique pavement class for
youngsters,G.L. Singh, who turns 79 this month. A
