The Main Unit is actually a box containing several components such as Main Control Unit, UPS,
SMPS, and Terminal Blocks. The most important component of the Main Unit is the Main
Control Unit. VDR-1000 is a PCB-based Voyage Data Recorder, and the Main Control Unit
(VDR-1000P) has Process board, Audio Board, Video Board, I/F Sub Board and I/F Main Board
to collect, process, and store incoming data. VDR-1000P also deals with peripheral devices like
FSU, Remote Alarm Unit (RAU, VDR-1000D), Microphones (VDR-1000M) as shown in
Figure 1.2.

The Main Control Unit (MCU) is the central unit in the VDR-1000 that receives and processes
information of the shipboard audio, radar images, and various types of data onboard the ship.
The information is collected and processed in the Audio Board, Video Board, I/F Main Board.
The data are then sent to the Process Board for recording to the internal storage medium of a
Hard Disk Drive (HDD) and the Final Storage Unit (FSU). The MCU also controls data transfer
on the downloading units (“External PC” as shown in Figure 1.2), real-time display unit (same

Simulation Tech Inc. -4- STI-VDR-FM-001

VDR-1000 Installation and Operation Manual STI VDR-1000

“External PC” that is used for this purpose during commissioning), and provides
communication to and from the remote alarm unit (VDR-1000D in Figure 1.2).

The Audio Board receives the bridge audio from microphones installed in the bridge and from
vessel radios (VHF communication receivers). This audio data is send to the Audio Board in
MCU for processing, storage and playback. The Audio board encodes the bridge and VHF audio
into MP3 format. The Audio board controls the audio test sources (internal buzzers inside each
microphone unit) to verify the functionality of the microphones, which complies the IEC61996
requirement. Digitized and compressed audio data are buffered into internal buffer of FIFO
memory banks, which is collected by the Process boards for data storage.

The Video Board receives the video signals from radar. The Video Board does Analog-Digital
Conversion (ADC), data compression into JPEG file format, which is then send to the MCU for
storage.

The Interface Board consists of two sub-boards; I/F Sub and I/F Main. I/F Sub provides
connector connections for signal interface, signal isolation, and does preliminary processing. I/F
Main board does further data processing of making all the data into ‘NMEA0183 like format’,
data buffering. The data is then collected by the Process Board for storage.

The Power Subsystem includes the Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) that supply 220VAC to
the SMPS and the Switch Mode Power Supply (SMPS) supplies various DC power to PCB
boards within VDR-1000P. The SMPS supplies 24VDC power to the FSU as well as all the
internal subsystems mentioned above. The UPS is a mandatory item required by IMO regulation
in order to supply power VDR-1000 during normal (or emergency) ship power failure. The UPS
capacity is selected to have enough power to run the VDR-1000 for over two (2) hours during
ship power failure to comply IMO requirement.

The Remote Alarm Unit (RAU) provides a visible and audible alarm and status information
about the VDR. This unit is designed to be mounted on a bridge console or walls, while
connected to the VDR via a serial link. The alarm unit has a button to initiate the IMO required
download operation on the VDR-1000. The other buttons are about alarm acknowledgement and
self test.

The Final Storage Unit (FSU) is a solid-state unit capable of storing 12 hours of VDR-1000 data
in compliance with IMO resolution A.861(20.). The FSU itself has been already certified

according the environmental and performance requirements from IMO.

The MCU, UPS and the Terminal Blocks are installed in the Main Unit. This unit is normally
mounted inside the bridge room or an adjacent electric equipment room. The microphones
having test buzzers are installed beneath the bridge ceilings. The FSU is mounted on the exterior
deck of the ship and connected to the MCU via power and communication lines.

2. Installation of Components Consisting VDR-1000

Before actual installation work, physical location and signal interface with existing pieces of
equipment onboard should be carefully reviewed and planned. When lots of additional signal
converters and relays are needed, selection of installation location is more important as they
themselves take quite a bit of installation spaces. This is why “planning” phase is needed and
the detailed is in another document, Doc. No. STI-VDR-FM-004, which mostly deals with
signals and the types. This chapter describes physical dimensions of each piece of equipment,
recommendations when choosing the installation location, and power requirements.

2.1 Physical Installation

When planning the installation space, installing points for VDR-1000 Main Unit, FSU, RAU
and the Microphones should be considered. When additional devices for signal conversion are
to be installed, positions and space requirements for such devices should be considered; synchro
converters, AC-DC converter, and relay boxes are the examples.

Following is a list of install position selection criteria that can be considered during the
preliminary survey phase. This is mainly about the installation position of the VDR-1000 Main
Unit.

- Minimize cable length for various signal interfaces

- Near from ship’s power source (N.B. VDR unit uses ship’s emergency power source)
- Enough installation space for cabling work
- Accessibility for future maintenance
- Least interference with officer’s movement

1) VDR Main Unit

The Main Unit is installed near the bridge console as it is where there are most signals originate
for VDR. Figure 2.1 shows pictures of VDR Main Unit.

for terminal blocks
Figure 2.1 Photographs of VDR Main Unit

The Main Unit should be installed in a location where all the power and signal cables can be
installed without interfering with other pieces of equipment. Also, the location should be
accessible for maintenance and other types of work at the Main Unit. Figure 2.2 shows the
dimensional information about the VDR Main Unit. Figure 2.3 is a recommended installation
example of the VDR Main Unit.

Figure 2.2 Dimensional drawings of VDR Main Unit

The Main Unit of VDR-1000 is designed so that all the installation related wiring work can be
done from the top through the terminal blocks at the top of the unit. The terminal blocks appear
when the top cover is removed. (See Figure 2.1.c for the view)

Cable entry to the VDR Main Unit is through cable entry holes at the rear-bottom of the Main
Unit. Small one at the left-rear-bottom is for power cables; incoming feeder and outgoing feeder
to the FSU. The other one, larger one at the center-rear-bottom, is for signal cables. The cables
are connected to the Terminal Blocks at the upper part of the Main Unit. (Detailed information
about cable wiring is in “STI-VDR-TE-005” for general information or wiring diagram
provided to the clients with the shipment of VDR-1000.

side of VDR Main Unit can be adjusted when necessary. There is no special limitation on the
space above the VDR Main Unit.

Once the VDR Main Unit is positioned, it will be fixed to the bottom either by welding or by
bolting. For installation using bolting, twelve (12) M-10 bolts will be used through six M-10
bolt holes on each of the legs. Figure 2.4 shows bolt hole locations at the legs of the VDR-1000
Main Unit.

Figure 2.4 Bolt hole locations for VDR-1000 Main Unit installation

The VDR Main Unit can also be mounted by welding. If welding is to be used, any additives
and dusts on edge of the legs and the floor should be cleaned before the welding. Welding seams
shall be painted to prevent unnecessary corrosion.

2) Final Storage Unit

For the Final Storage Unit (FSU), VDR-1000 supports both fixed type and float-free type as
shown in Figure 2.5.

The following table shows FSUs that VDR-1000 supports. Please note that some of the FSUs
are used only when VDR-1000 is installed as the S-VDR (Simplified Voyage Data Recorder)

4) Synchro-converter

Simulation Tech Inc. - 13 - STI-VDR-FM-001

VDR-1000 Installation and Operation Manual STI VDR-1000

Old measuring devices of rotating parts usually provide a special type of signal called as
‘synchro-signals’. Examples of such devices are “rudder angle indicator”, “wind direction/speed
indicator”, and “gyro compass”. These devices usually has two indicators; one at the ceiling
above windshield and the other on a console. Figure 2.8 shows a typical electrical connection of
such devices between their indicators; transmitter and indicator.

R1 and R2 in Figure 2.8 are AC power supply from the ship. S1, S2, and S3 are signals to drive
the indicator needle in both locations. In order for VDR receive this kind of signal from the
device, as this signal type is not supported in usual VDR interfaces, a special signal converter is
needed, which is called as synchro-converter.

Simulation Tech Inc supplies this kind of signal converters as optional supplies because not all
the ships require the converter. Detailed information about the signal converter is available from
STI upon request.

2.2 Installation and Test of Bridge Microphones

Recording of bridge audio is one of the most important requirements from IMO as the voice
information can do an essential role during incident or accident investigation. Bridge
microphones are to be installed at locations where required audio can be recorded. For example,

Simulation Tech Inc. - 14 - STI-VDR-FM-001

VDR-1000 Installation and Operation Manual STI VDR-1000

conning stations, radar displays, chart tables, and all other working stations are the locations
where audio shall be recorded. IMO requirement about the bridge audio is as follows,

“One or more microphones on the bridge shall be placed, such that conversation at of near the
conning stations, radar displays, chart tables, etc.” (4.6.5 Bridge audio, IEC61996) This means
that microphones should be installed so that conversation audio at various workstations can be
recorded. According to IEC standard of IEC61996, “bridge workstation” is defined as,

- Center line conning

- Bridge wing(s)
- Main radar
- Chart table
- Helmsman
- Communication

The microphone locations are determined during the installation planning stage. For the case of
new builds, as there are detailed drawings available, microphone locations are to be set on
general arrangement drawings. When installing VDR units on existing ships, the microphone
locations should be decided during site survey.

Microphones from STI are an integrated item of a microphone sensor and a buzzer. Buzzer is
integrated for periodical test of microphone sensor as required by IMO specification.

Figure 2.9 VDR microphone from STI

Simulation Tech Inc. - 15 - STI-VDR-FM-001

VDR-1000 Installation and Operation Manual STI VDR-1000

Microphones shown in Figure 2.9 are to be attached to the ceiling of the locations inside the
bridge room. They are designed to install using bolts, but they can be installed using Velcro
material as well.

A hole of 10mm in diameter shall be prepared as the microphone wire entry into the ceiling
panels to run the cable to the VDR Main Unit.

VDR-1000 from STI provides connection ports for up to ten (10) microphones. As the basic unit,
STI provides a final storage unit (FSU) that can store audio signals of up to 5 microphone audio
information. If more than five (5) microphones are to be used, the internal memory size of the
FSU should be increased accordingly, which will have to be reviewed during planning/quotation
phase.

For periodic self test of microphones, each microphone should be installed with at least 3 meter-
distance from adjacent microphones. This is to make sure that buzzer sound from a microphone
assembly does not interfere with adjacent microphones. Should microphones be installed closer
than the recommended distance, adjustment of buzzer sound threshold should be made to
eliminate possible interference.

about 3m around the microphone.

2.3 Power Requirements

VDR-1000 is powered from ships emergency power supply. The supply must be 220-240 VAC,
50/60Hz. Please contact Simulation Tech Inc. for other input power requirements.

The ship’s emergency power is connected to the UPS inside the Main Unit. The UPS provides
power to all VDR-1000 components and the main entry of the power is SMPS within Main Unit.

3. Operating Instructions

The whole VDR system including MCU, FSU, RAU and microphones always operates when
the Main Unit’s UPS is turned on. The VDR-1000 is ready to operate, therefore, when UPS is
turned on.

There are two windows programs to operate the VDR-1000, or “vInst” and “vPlay”. vInst is in
charge of setting the configuration of the VDR-1000 up and vPlay is in charge of verifying the
VDR-1000 configuration settings and data acquisition status.

vInst and vPlay must be operated only by a Simulation Tech Inc. representative or other
authorized service personnel. During normal operation, a user cannot access to the VDR-1000.
There are several features within the vInst and vPlay to perform the verification and setup of the
VDR-1000. These features are described as followings.

At the end of this Chapter, Section 3.12 describes data download functionality of the VDR-1000
through the Remote Alarm Unit (RAU).

3.1 VDR Configuration Setup - vInst

The windows application, vInst, to configure the Main Control Unit (MCU) settings runs on a
notebook computer connected to the MCU through Ethernet. In order to secure the setup data
and the configuration file, entering password dialog window will pop up at the starting of vInst
and an engineer (the Simulation Tech Inc. representative or other authorized service personnel)
should enter the password to proceed to the next step of installation. This application has four
main functions which are saving the configuration file and the setup data for system setup,
transferring the configuration file and the setup data to the MCU, receiving the configuration
file and the setup data from the MCU, and comparing modified setup data in this application to
the system setup data configured in the MCU. Among these functions, saving, transferring and
comparing function will be done at once by the “Send” button and receiving function will be
done by the “Receive” button.

There are 9 information parts shown in Figure 3.1 to accomplish the functions. The information

Remote Alarm Unit (RAU) that is the only display unit through which ship officers can check
status of the Voyage Data Recorder (VDR) has one functionality to commence data download
from Final Storage Unit (FSU) into the internal hard disk drive within the Main Control Unit
(MCU). One of the buttons on the RAU is used for this functionality.

In order to commence the data download from the FSU, the user need to press “Download”
button on the RAU more than five seconds. Then, the LCD display on the RAU will indicate
that the data downloading is in progress.

Once the data downloading is completed, then the RAU will make a short “beep” to notify the
operator that the process is completed. Downloaded data then can be used in many ways; data
archiving, playback, etc.

Internal HDD of the VDR-1000 has two partitions; one partition is for long term data storage,
and the other is for downloaded data. The internal HDD can maintain ten (10) sets of
downloaded data. If data downloading is made more than ten (10) times, then the oldest data set
is removed and the new set is copied into the HDD.

When an error is detected, the LCD screen on the RAU shows message relevant to the error.
The error message helps the crew to report Simulation Tech Inc. or its service network with
more information of the current error status.

When VDR-1000 is booting, the LCD screen shows message like the following.

V D R - 1 0 0 0
I n i t i a l i z i n g
R 0 0 A 0 0 N 0 0 0 M 0 0

The first three lines are used to show the error messages. When there are more than three errors,
then the first three lines will be scrolled automatically to show the entire error messages. The
last line is dedicated for the status report and is called the status line. R00, A00, N000, M00 in
the status line indicates the number of errors that are originated from Radar (image recording),
Audio (microphones and VHF recording), Navigation (analog, digital and NMEA0183 data,
recording) and Miscellaneous respectively. For example when two microphones are out of order,
then A02 will be shown on the LCD screen.

following.

V D R - 1 0 0 0

R 0 0 A 0 0 N 0 0 0 M 0 0

The error messages are made of two parts; one is the error code and the other is the description.
For example, the error code for the Radar starts from the number 11. When there is an error that
is originated from Radar, therefore, you can see the error code 11, indicating that the 1st radar is
not recorded, but this function is not yet realized. Some of the error codes are not implemented
yet. Table 2.2 shows the error codes for each error.

3. VDR Configuration Setup - vInst

The windows application, vInst, to configure the MCU settings runs on a notebook computer
connected to the MCU through Ethernet. For system security reasons, a password dialog
window will pop up at the starting of vInst. This application has several functions;

- Save configuration files.(config.cfg, buzzer.cfg, video.cfg, audio.cfg, nmea.cfg,)

- Transfer the configuration files into the FSU or MCU.
(MCU uses configuration files in FSU, not in MCU)
- Reboot MCU in order to reflect new configuration files.
- Compare modified configuration files in this application to the configuration files
which the MCU read and rewrote.
- Receive the configuration files from the FSU or MCU.
- Show and Setup MCU clock time.
- Test Microphones’ Status.

Among above functions, saving, transferring, rebooting and comparing function will be done in
order by clicking the “Send” button and receiving function will be done by clicking the
“Receive” button.

To set MCU with new configuration files, after configuration files are saved and transferred to
the FSU, you must reboot MCU. After MCU is rebooted, the configuration files rewritten in the
MCU can be compared to the files in notebook computer. If file transfer from the
commissioning notebook computer to the FSU is not done properly or If the MCU do not read
the files or reset properly, the dialog box shows the results.
When the “Receive” button is commanded, the notebook computer updates the display window
with the configuration files received from the FSU.
