Notepad Tutorial

Introduction
Notepad is a handy program that a user can type in text quickly and easily. It is not for
publishing a book but more of a scratchpad. This is a tutorial on how to use Notepad.

What will be taught?

 Opening Notepad
 Saving a document
 Printing a document
 Opening an existing document

Open Notepad

To open Notepad click on start > All Programs > accessories > notepad

To enter text, just start typing in Notepad.

If you make a mistake typing you can backspace over it.

Save
To save your work click on File > Save and if you have not saved it before a screen will
appear.
For now, make sure the Encoding is set to ANSI.

Print
To print File > Print...  The three dots after the word Print means there will be another screen
that pops up. This is a Windows standard.

Select the printer you wish to print to then click the 'Print' button.

Open
To open an existing notepad document, click on File > Open...

If you have not saved a document you are working on, Notepad will ask you if you want to
save it or discard it. The Open window appears (note the word 'open' in the title bar) which
allows you to browse to your existing document.

Note the File name has a *.txt which means when you browse for your already created
document only notepad type documents (those ending with .txt) will show up in the Open
window.

Notepad Tutorial - II
Format
The next options are under the Format heading.

Word Wrap

Normally selecting word wrap is the best thing. What this does is when enabled, when typing
in Notepad comes to the right side of the page, the words will wrap and start on the next line
without having to hit the Enter key.

Note this does not affect printing. If there is a several line paragraph in which Enter was
never hit then the paragraph will take up the entire width of the printed paper's margins.

To turn word wrap ON click on Format then Word Wrap. A checkmark will appear next to
Word Wrap.

To turn word wrap OFF click on Format then Word Wrap. The checkmark next to word wrap
will disappear, indicating word wrap is off.
To open a new Notepad document, click New under the File menu.  A new document will
open up in Notepad.  If you already have work on Notepad and you click New, it will ask you
if you'd like to save your work.

To open a saved document, click Open...  A new box will pop up to help you browse for files
on your computer.  Notepad can open any type of text document (*.txt, *.doc, etc.) although
some formatting will not appear in Notepad.

To save a document on Notepad, click Save or Save As...  A new box will pop up asking you
choose a file name for your document.

Page Setup can be reached by clicking Page Setup...  In Page Setup you can change the size of
the paper, the orientation, the margins, and other printing formatting.

To print a document, simply select Print from the File menu.

To exit Notepad, click Exit, before Notepad closes it will prompt you to save changes, click
Yes, No, Cancel accordingly.
The Edit menu has many options for editing your document.  Certain options such as Undo,
Cut, Copy, Paste, and Delete are pretty self explanatory, so we'll move onto the other option
under the Edit menu.

If you click Select All, all the text on the document will select.  Now that everything is
selected you can format the whole page.

You can add the time/date into your document by clicking the Time/Date button.  This will
make your entire Notepad document look professionally done!

If Word Wrap is selected, then Notepad's horizontal scroll bar will go away.  When you reach
the edge of the page, it will automatically go to the next line.  This makes reading much
easier, and looks visually appealing.  If Word Wrap is unselected, then your text will stay on
the same line until you hit Enter.  You can turn on/off Word Wrap at anytime you'd like.

Notepad's default font is Fixedsys with size 12 selected.  Although you cannot change select
font in Notepad, you can always change the text of the whole document by clicking Set Font...
By doing this, it will make the text easier for you to read.

To find a certain word(s)/letter(s) in your document, simply select Find... and a dialog box
will pop up.

Under the find dialog box you'll find a textbox.  In that textbox you can type in the letters or
words you'd like to find in your document.  If Match Case is checked, then your search will be
case sensitive, otherwise, it won't.  Once you've found your word, you can hit Find Next to
find any other matches in your document.

Under the Help menu you can find other useful help topics, and you can also find out your
version of Notepad.
