Units and Measurement

Before understanding what are the units for & what do we measure, let us understand the concept of
Physical Quantities

Properties of a substance or body that can be measured is called Physical Quantity e.g. your height,
mass in your body etc. In general all measurable quantities are known as physical quantities such as
Mass, Length, Time, Current and Temperature. To measure these types of quantities we use different
types of devices in different situations.

The smallest quantity that can be measured with a device or an instrument is called the “lest count” of
that device.

Instruments/devices to measure:

1. Length- Vernier Callipers, Rulers & Meter Tapes

2. Mass- Balance (Common, Digital, Analytical)

3. Time- Clock (Alarm, Digital, Atomic)

4. Electric Current- Ammeter, Multimeter

5. Temperature- Thermometer

6. Luminus Intensity

7. Amount of substance

Definition:

Measurement- process of comparing of the given Physical quantity with the known Standard quantity of
the same nature

Unit- Standard Quantity used to measure the given Physical quantity

Kinds of Units:

1. Fundamental or Basic Units- Unit that which is independent of any other unit
2. Derived Units- Unit which depend on the Fundamental Units or which can be expressed in terms
of the Fundamental units
