“Second Spanish Speaking Countries Festival: Embracing Diversity” April

2015 @ E.B. Aycock Middle School by Maria Barreto/Spanish

Our Second Spanish Speaking Country Festival grew bigger in every way. We doubled the
countries represented. Students had a great opportunity to develop and to show leadership
skills, to embrace, and to learn about diversity, and to share their knowledge with fellow
students, staff and guests. Each country represented created their costumes, posters and
prompts under my supervision and with the help of their chosen parent/teacher support.
Research was carried out in specific class days, meetings, and outside school time. Parents
and Teachers got more involved this year than they did the year before..Sponsors did their
part, and supported our food station. There were Venezuelan arepas, enchiladas, tacos,
fajitas, beans, chips and salsa, quesadillas, Mexican authentic beverages, and lots of fun.

Kids from all grade levels participated as presenters. Students experienced planning,
preparation and execution of an event from first hand like they did in the First Festival. They
rehearsed their presentations during Spanish class time and at home. Distance communication
(email and Google Documents) became a great tool for sharing information, asking questions
and leading groups. As it happened the previous year, EC students participated with their own
stand. .

Music from each country was played; Games were created in each station, and all students
participated in raffles thanks to our sponsors: Walmart, La Ribera, and Mi Cabana.

This year, thirteen countries were represented: Venezuela, Colombia, Dominican Republic,
Spain, Nicaragua, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Panama,. Ecuador, Honduras, El Salvador, Argentina,
and Bolivia.

Encore teachers provided support in the food station and transitioning kids to the event
venues: Gym and Cafeteria.
Custodians were very helpful in organizing things for the event and helping to clean up after
the event. Counselors, Homeroom teachers and school staff were also very involved and
helpful. To all thank you!
