The carpenter’s dream
SETUP Story of Ever Machine Shop

At a very young age of 14, Severino Alipoyo started to work as a carpenter and carver. He worked
as a carpenter in a machine shop in Surigao City where he taught himself welding and machining
works. In 1992, he started a business with a friend but after three years of managing, the business
flopped. Still wanting to continue the business, Severino worked alone in the shop and named it
Ever Machine Shop.

Severino saw an opportunity to upgrade the shop’s equipment and applied for SETUP in 2014.
The firm acquired three lathe machines and a universal milling machine. With the upgrade in the
equipment and added income, Severino was able to buy two more equipment for the shop.

The shop used to outsource some services including cylinder head surfacing services from
other shops adding more to the expenses. To solve the problem brought by the added cost of
outsourcing services, Severino applied again for SETUP in 2018. On their second availment of

the SETUP innovation fund, the firm acquired a big vertical

whitening machine which resulted in a 34% increase in the
volume of production of well-milled rice (12,200 sacks per
month). The firm also availed of technology training on
GMP, food safety awareness, food product development,
sensory evaluation methods, and food preservation. They
also availed of the Manufacturing Productivity Extension
(MPEX) consultancy program which helped the firm improve
their plant layout, process flow, management and general
business operations.

With the new milling equipment producing quality rice, it

helped provide a sure market for rice farmers in Surigao del
Sur. The firm reported an increase of 766% in gross sales
in 2019 compared to the previous years prior to SETUP
intervention.

The firm was able to procure cargo and service vehicles after
a year of intervention, expanding their market from Surigao
del Sur to Caraga region and helping more rice farmers.
