II. What You Need to Know

REMINDER: This should be done with the assistance of an able parent, guardian or sibling

Vowel digraphs are combination of vowels that combine to

make a single sound.
If the long a sound is at the end of the word or syllable, use –ay
as in bay, lay, say, may, ray.
If the long a sound is at the beginning or middle of the word or
syllable consider -ai as in rain, brain, tail, sail, bait.
Long e is spelled either with –ee like in see, teeth, tree, deer,
street, jeep or –ea like in heat, seal, read, seat, beat. The two
vowels come side by side but the first is the one that makes it long
sound.
Some digraphs include double vowels like –oo as in hood, tool,
cool,took, food.
Other digraphs are formed by two different vowels like –oa in
loaf, soap, road, load, boat.
