** Calls son
Grandfather: Ah boy, are you reaching? It’s late and the food is getting cold.
Father: Aiya pa, I won’t be able to make it to the dinner tonight. I’m still at work. Didn’t I
tell you I won’t be able to make it? I’ll be there in the morning okay. Bye bye bye, got work.
I’ve got to go.
** Grandfather shakes head, looking utterly disappointed. Aunt looks worried.

decorations are up, and the family were all clad in red, the traditional colour to be worn on
CNY. The family was waiting for the arrival of the eldest son.
Aunt: Finally! He’s going to be coming. I will be able to see both my nephews.
Daughter: Yes, it’s been so long since I’ve seen my cousins. I can’t wait.
** Grandfather sits on the chair, watching television with a smile on his face.
** Car pulls up at the front of the house
Daughter: They’re here! Grandfather, ma, come on out!
Narrator: The family of four walks towards the house. The sons are grumpy as their sleep
was disrupted.
Father & mother: Gong Xi Fa Cai pa!
** Everyone greets and hugs one other.
Aunt: Aiya, why are your sons wearing black? Didn’t you tell them that it is inauspicious to
wear that colour. It’ll bring bad luck!
Mother: I told them many times already. They simply choose to ignore my instructions.
** Mother sighs and looks ashamed as her kids did not listen to her.
Mother: Ha, see. Look at your cousin ** Points towards aunt’s daughter. She’s dressed so
well in the cheongsam.
Father: Back in the days, papa and mama would scold us so much if we were to wear a black
coloured outfit. But you guys are so stubborn.
** Grandsons greets their grandfather and walks in the house, ignoring the words of
their parents.
Grandfather: Okay come, it’s your favourite part of CNY, the angpao!
Narrator: The grandsons are annoyed with the nagging and chooses to head into the house,
ignoring the grandfather who was standing there with the ang pao packet.
** Grandsons whip out their phones and starts playing with it.
** Grandfather shakes his head and walk to the couch to hand the ang pao to them.
Grandfather: Here, this year’s ang pao for you guys. So how have you all been, you’ve been
so busy. It’s almost impossible to get a hold off you.
Father: I’m sorry pa. Work has been tedious and I was not able to get a time off. How was
the dinner last night?
Aunt: It was good! Papa prepared your favourite dish.
Grandfather: Aiya nevermind. You’re here now. That’s all that matters. So boys, how is
school?
Grandson1: Good.
Grandfather: Good only? Nothing else to share?
Grandson2: School has been really good.
** Grandfather shakes his head as he watches his grandsons play with their phone.
SCENE 3: LUNCH TABLE
Narrator: The day passed on, and aunt invites everyone to gather for lunch. The food is laid
out on the table by mother and aunt, while aunts daughter helps to set up. Everyone takes a
seat and starts making small conversations.
Grandfather: So son, how’s your work?
Father: It’s good, business is booming. I was thinking of taking the family out for a vacation.
Grandfather: That’s good, where are you planning to go?
Mother: Taiwan probably. I heard the weather is lovely during this time of the year.
Grandfather: So kids, are you guys excited to go?
** Grandkids talks among themselves and ignore grandfather.
Father: Kids, grandfather just asked you a question.
** Grandkids start laughing at their own jokes and ignore.
Narrator: Grandfather has had enough and gets up abruptly, looking furious.
Grandfather: I don’t know how your parents raised you. Where are your manners? Don’t
you know quality time with family is important? Especially on CNY.
Narrator: Grandfather storms out of the house, looking very disappointed and angry.
Grandkids look upset and worried as they may have hurt their grandfather.
Father: Why can’t you guys behave for once?
Narrator: Father leaves the dining table, in search for his father. He hopes to calm his dad
down and have him join them for the lunch.
Mother: Kids, there’s a reason why your grandfather values the traditions. They all have
some significance behind them. He was already disappointed in us that we couldn’t make it
for the reunion dinner. Do you know how important the reunion dinner is?
** Kids shakes their head.
Aunt: The New Year’s Eve Feast is a mandatory custom and an age-old tradition where families
come together to feast on authentic delicacies.  The reunion dinner also symbolises a good

start to the new year while also bonding the family.

Mother: This is why it is important for all of us to be together during the day. Not only that,
there are a few other things that are important. Do you know why everything is red during
CNY?
** Kids shakes their head.
Aunt: Red, corresponding with fire, symbolizes good fortune and joy. Red is found
everywhere during Chinese New Year and other holidays and family gatherings. A red
envelope is a monetary gift which is given in Chinese society during holiday or special
occasions. The red color of the packet symbolizes good luck.
Mother : Grandfather isn’t getting any joy by being mad at you guys, please try to understand
where he’s coming form.
Son1: Sorry ma, we understand that family time is important. We’ll be more cooperative.
Narrator: Father managed to convince grandfather to come back into the house and join
them for lunch.
Son2: We’re sorry grandfather, we didn’t realize how important this was to you. We
should’ve been aware of the traditions and educated ourselves.
Son1: We’re sorry grandfather.
Narrator: After apologizing profusely, a smile crept on grandfather’s face.
Grandfather: *smiles. It’s okay, all is good now. Let’s eat.
Narrator: And so everyone ate their lunch harmoniously and CNY started to feel a whole lot
better.

SCENE 4: FIRECRACKER FUN

Narrator: In attempt to lighten the mood of the house, aunt’s daughter invited both her
cousins to play with the fire crackers outside. She figured that it was best if they did
something together in hope to cheer their grandfather up.
Daughter: Come one you guys, let’s head outside and play with the crackers! Mum has
bought lots of it, even our favourite, the long fire crackers.
Son2: Why do we have to go outside and play with the crackers when there’s a game on our
phone that involves fire crackers?
Son1: Don’t be such a bad sport, you heard what father said earlier, it is important to bond as
a family, let’s go and play.
** All three cousins carry the bag of fire crackers outside of the house and starts
playing. Parents and grandfather was smiling, looking at their kids bonding.
Narrator: The three of them were having a blast with the crackers when they saw a van
pulled up in front of their house.
Grandfather: Ah yes, they have arrived. I’ve invited these lion dancers to bless the house.
** Lion dancers set up and wear their costumes. They start performing and the
grandchildren takes out their phone and starts recording the performance.
Narrator: The grandchildren were very entertained to see the lion dance performance and it
can be seen that grandfather is pleased with the fact that his grandchildren are enjoying a
traditional performance.
** Lion dance ends and the dancers leave.
Narrator: Suddenly, an idea struck Son1.
Son1: Guys! Why don’t we put up a show for grandfather? We shall dance for a k-pop song
and we’ll show him that modern performance isn’t too bad.
** Both cousins nods in agreement and decides to perform.
A.daughter: Grandfather, uncle, aunty and ma, come and sit. We’ve got something to show
you.
Narrator: The rest of the family were puzzled and curious as to what their children were
about to show them.
** Kids starts to perform.
Narrator: As the kids were performing, grandfather was grinning ear to ear, truly enjoying
the performance. He then realized that certain modern practices aren’t too bad after all.
** Performance ends. Scene 4 ends.
SCENE 5: DINNER GATHERING
** No acting, only narrator talks. Everyone sits around the dining table and has dinner
happily. Both sons help out to set the table.
Narrator: So it seems that these youngsters have finally grasped the idea of the importance
of traditions on CNY and are cooperating with their family to have a wonderful CNY
celebration. The storyline of this play is designed to showcase the traditional practices on
Chinese New Year and how things have changed over the years. There are some things that
