TECHNICAL INSTRUCTIONS NO. : 07 / 2016

Date ATA Sub ATA Jet Airways Jet Lite Airplane

04/04/2016 78 31   BNG

Applicability : BOEING 737-700/800/900/900ER Fitted with CFM56-7B Engines.

Supersedes : NA

Subject : Troubleshooting Guidelines for Thrust Reverser System Faults

Authority Ref : B737 AIRCRAFT MAINTENANCE MANUAL

There is an increasing trend in the number of the Thrust Reverser System related
defects. This Technical Instruction has been issued to provide guidelines to Line
Background
: Maintenance for determining proper procedure to be followed for troubleshooting
information
Thrust Reverser System related defects.

If flight crew reports REVERSER light illumination, obtain additional information

from the crew about,
1. Phase of flight when REVERSER light illuminates.
2. Thrust Reverser fails to DEPLOY/STOW.
3. REV AMBER/GREEN displays correctly or not on the Upper Display Unit.
4. Thrust lever interlock operates correctly or not.

Perform EAU BITE as per FIM 78-31 TASK 801 to determine the current
maintenance messages.

EAU BITE is necessary to identify the correct FIM to be followed using MAINT MSG
INDEX. Bite check has to be done in the right sequence and record the failures
messages, this will help in Fault Isolation Process and avoid multiple component
Content : replacement and reduce NFF (Refer to flow chart).

Whenever EAU Bite has been carried out information has to be recorded in Work
order correctly, whether it’s STOW FAULT or DEPLOY FAULT or EAU FAULT
along with associated FAILED COMPONENT. It is possible to have more than
one failed component.

DO NOT reset EAU without first recording all EAU fault lights.

DO NOT cycle reverser 5 or more times without first recording all EAU fault lights.

DO NOT quickly cycle T/Rs to confirm if fault is active

Quickly cycling T/Rs can mask faults (may also trip hydraulic fuse & lock-up T/R)

TECHNICAL INSTRUCTIONS FORM

IF T/RS ARE CYCLED:

 WAIT MINIMUM OF 10 SECONDS AFTER COMMANDING DEPLOY

 WAIT MINIMUM OF 30 SECONDS AFTER COMMANDING STOW

All Deploy faults other than Sync Locks require 5.3 seconds minimum in deploy
(Sync Locks require 1.3 seconds min)

Stow faults require 26 seconds in stow for Sync Lock faults

14.3 seconds in stow for HIV & DCV faults
9.6 seconds in stow for Stow/Lock Sensor faults

- It is recommended to slowly move the reverse thrust lever to stow without

pausing.
- Holding reverse thrust levers in position between stow and reverse idle
detent can cause REVERSER light (or ENGINE CONTROL light).

If more than 1 EAU fault is present, use correct FIM from MAINT MESSAGE
INDEX for combination of faults

Examples: (For reference only)

1. Deploy DCV fault with all Lock & Stow Sensor Faults – Indicates DCV
failed to open (Lock/Stow Faults expected).

2. Deploy HIV with all Lock & Stow Sensor Faults – Indicates HIV failed to
open

3. Deploy/Stow L & R Sync Lock Pwr Faults – Issue w/ Control Circuit (S4,
R477/R479, R478/R480)

4. Stow HIV & any Lock or Stow Sensor Fault – Indicates auto-restow
activated (HIV expected)

5. All Stow Faults except L & R Sync Lock Pwr & EAU Fault Msg– Slow
reverse thrust lever movement from deploy to stow.

6. All Stow faults but EAU Fault Msg – Likely issue with S6 switch (in Auto
Throttle Switch Packs) or associated wiring.

- The above mentioned guidelines to be used by Line Maintenance to

establish correct FIM Task to be followed for carrying out troubleshooting.
(Ref attached flow chart).

- In case the defect cannot be rectified using FIM it is recommended to

Action : perform Thrust Reverser System Health Check in accordance with Task
Card No: JBNG-78-CHK-184-00.

- During Deactivation of the Thrust Reverser, do not over torque the

deactivation pin as it can damage the anchor nut which might result in
operational disruption. Refer AMM Task 78-00-00-040-801-F00 for
correct procedure and torque values.

The REVERSER light on P5 panel illuminates Look at EAU front panel and verify which lights are on:
Light illuminates when any of these T/R control system • T/R STOW FAULTS (Engine 1 or 2) (Red)
components do not operate correctly during T/R stow • T/R DEPLOY FAULTS (Engine 1 or 2) (Red)
or deploy: • EAU FAULT (Engine 1 or 2) (Red)
- Sleeve LOCK & STOW sensors (1 ea. per sleeve) DO NOT PRESS RESET SWITCH ON EAU AT THIS TIME
- Sync Lock • Perform appropriate action below for STOW, DEPLOY
- Direction Control Valve (DCV) inside T/R control valve or EAU FAULT lights.
module • Fault Isolation Manual (FIM) Task 78-31 Task 801
- Hydraulic Isolation Valve (HIV) inside T/R control valve explains how to perform the BITE test
module

STOW FAULT on EAU: DEPLOY FAULT on EAU: EAU FAULT – Internal EAU Fault:

1. Check history (last 5 stow events) 1. Check history (last 5 deploy events) • Power down airplane and re-rack EAU.
• Push and hold T/R STOW FAULTS switch for applicable • Push and hold T/R DEPLOY FAULTS switch for applicable engine • If EAU FAULT light remains on EAU, replace
engine • All fault lights will illuminate for 1 second, then extinguish. Failed component EAU.
• All fault lights will illuminate for 1 second, then extinguish. light will remain illuminated
Failed component light will remain illuminated • Release switch and record all faults. Label as deploy faults.
• Release switch and record all faults. Label as stow faults.
2. Check for current fault
2. Check for current fault • Move reverse thrust lever aft to deploy T/R.
• Push and hold the FAULT RESET button for the applicable • Push and hold the FAULT RESET button for the applicable engine for 2 seconds
engine for 2 seconds • Wait at least 30 seconds
• Wait at least 30 seconds • Record as deploy fault for illuminated component.
• Record as stow fault for illuminated component. • Move reverse thrust lever forward to stow T/R.

Does EAU fault lights remain on EAU after accomplishment of the following actions?

• Checked EAU for fault light per above. Checked EAU for current STOW or DEPLOY faults.
• Pressed the RESET button for > 2 seconds
• REVERSER light remains illuminated on P5 panel.

If troubleshooting per FIM cannot be accomplished, deactivate T/R

Deactivation procedure required for the MEL and DDPG is found in AMM Part II, Chapter 78 (TASK 78-00-00-040-801-F00)
