Question 1

(a) If Set A={x, y}and Set B={1, 2, 3}, find the Cartesian products for
(i) A B [2]

(b) Given that f(x) = x3 + 2x2 -3x -11 is a polynomial. Show that f(x)=0 can be
arranged

[3]

(c) Let A = and let R = {(x, y): x, y ∈ A, x2 = y2}. Prove that R is an

equivalence relation. [9]

(d) Let R be the relation on {1, 2, 3, 4} given by uRv if and only if u + 2v is odd.
Represent R in each of the following ways:

(i) As a set of ordered pairs [2]

(ii) In graphical form [2]
(iii) In matrix form [2]

Question 2

NB: Complement can be represented as B′ or –B or ̚ B

(a) Use Boolean algebra to simplify the following expression, then draw a logic
gate circuit diagram for the simplified expression. (A + B)( ¬A+ ¬B) [5]

(b) Given the logic gate below, deduce the Boolean algebra expression for the
output. [6]

(c) Prove the following equivalence using truth tables

[6]

(d) Convert the following statement to predicate logic: “A necessary condition

for Angelo coming to the party is that, if Bruno and Carlo are not coming,
David comes” [3]

Question 3

j+1
(a) Evaluate the value of the sum – 2j) [4]

(b) Using laws of set theory prove (A⋂B)⋃ (A⋃B’)’ ≡ B [6]

(c) Each student in a class of 40 plays at least one indoor game chess, carom
and scrabble. 18 play chess, 20 play scrabble and 27 play carom. 7 play
chess and scrabble, 1 play scrabble and carom and 4 play chess, carom
and scrabble. Find the number of students who play.

(i) Chess and carom. [4]

(ii) Chess and carom but not scrabble. [6]

Question 4

(a) Given the statement “for every real number there is a greater real number”
(i) Write the statement formally using predicates and quantifiers .
[2]
(ii) Write the negation of the statement in (a) i. above. [2]

(b) W(x,y) : x wrote y
L(x,y) : x is longer than y
N(x) : x is a novel
h : Hardy
a : Austen
j : Jude the Obscure
p : Pride and Prejudice

Given these specifications, write the predicate logic formulas to represent

the sentence, 'Hardy wrote a novel which is longer than any of Austen's'.
[4]

(c) Given that and g(x) = , evaluate (f ◦ g) (x)

[4]

(d) Let A ={x ∈ | x ≠ 3} and a function f: A → be defined by f(x) = .

Decide and show whether the function f is an injective function. [5]

(e) [3]

Question 5

(a) Use the inverse of the linear system or otherwise to solve for x, y, and z.

-7x + 5y + 8z = 43
-6x - 3y + 4z = 16
-2x - 1y - 9z = 88 [9]
