INFLUENZA VACCINATION GUIDE

PRECAUTIONS:
1. Illness
a. Please ALLOW influenza vaccination of patients with mild illness like cough, colds, low grade
fever and those with chronic diseases.
b. Please ALLOW flu vaccination of patients who are immune compromised.
c. Please DEFER vaccination of those with acute severe illnesses like high grade fever.
d. Special precaution on bleeding disorders.
2. Medications: Please ALLOW vaccination of patients taking ANY kind of medication.
i. Special precaution on blood thinners.
3. Allergy:
a. Egg allergy: see page 2
b. Allergies to food (other than eggs) and medicine: Please ALLOW flu vaccine administration.
4. Pregnancy and lactation: Please ALLOW flu vaccine administration in all trimesters.
5. Simultaneous administration with other vaccines:
a. Simultaneous administration of any number of vaccines is allowed with influenza vaccine.
b. No minimum interval is required when other vaccines are administered before and after
influenza vaccine.

OTHER REMINDERS:
1. Please make sure that all forms are filled up completely and signed.
2. Please make sure that forms of minors are accomplished and signed by parents or guardians.
3. Please double check what vaccine the patient is receiving: INFLUVAC (Trivalent), INLFUVAC TETRA
(Quadrivalent) or FLUARIX TETRA (Quadrivalent)
4. Please indicate age and dose of pediatric patients on the screening form (see above for dosing).
5. Please advise cold compress of injection site for the first 48 hours.
6. Please advise patients to stay for 30 minutes before leaving vaccination premises.
7. Please throw used syringe directly to sharps dispenser. DO NOT recap.
8. Please address all concerns to Kristel 09175363342 NOT to client.
Recommendations for flu vaccination of persons with egg allergy
1. Persons with a history of egg allergy who have experienced only hives after exposure to egg should
receive flu vaccine.
2. Persons who report having had reactions to egg involving symptoms other than hives, such as
angioedema, respiratory distress, lightheadedness, or recurrent emesis; or who required
epinephrine or another emergency medical intervention, may similarly receive any licensed and
recommended flu vaccine that is otherwise appropriate for the recipient’s age and health status. The
selected vaccine should be administered in an inpatient or outpatient medical setting (including, but
not necessarily limited to hospitals, clinics, health departments, and physician offices). Vaccine
administration should be supervised by a health care provider who is able to recognize and manage
severe allergic conditions.
3. A previous severe allergic reaction to flu vaccine, regardless of the component suspected of being
responsible for the reaction, is a contraindication to future receipt of the vaccine.

What is the appropriate dosing age for young children?


1. The following children will require 2 DOSES of influenza vaccine, administered at least 4 weeks apart:
a. Children aged 6 months through 8 years who have never been vaccinated against
influenza or for whom vaccination history is unknown.
b. Children aged 6 months through 8 years who have not received at least 2 doses of
seasonal influenza vaccine (trivalent or quadrivalent).
2. The following children will require 1 DOSE of influenza vaccine:
a. Children 6 months through 8 years who have received at least 2 doses of seasonal
influenza vaccine (trivalent or quadrivalent) before July 1, 2016
b. Children 9 years of age and older

Should I aspirate before injecting the vaccine?


No, because there are no large blood vessels in the recommended sites, aspiration (i.e., pulling back on the
syringe plunger after needle insertion but before injection) is not necessary before injecting vaccines. The
Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices’ General Recommendations on Immunization state that
aspiration is not required before administering a vaccine.
