Assignment Brief
Unit number and title Unit 10 Surveying in Construction and Civil Engineering
Scenario
In construction site, site surveying is need to the preliminary work, planning work and
construction work. Surveying is an essential part of any building project. By the end of this unit
you should be able to take and record accurate measurements using a variety of equipment and
methods. You will be able to use your knowledge of the surveying equipment to set out a site
and apply some of your knowledge from the maths unit in calculating distances.
Your role within the construction works is to produce drawings for planning of construction works
and setting out the building and control alignment of construction work. So, you have to be able
to use surveying instrument such that tape, levelling, electronic theodolite and total station for
measuring the horizontal and vertical distances, angles, bearings, azimuths and coordinates for
surveying stations and be able to perform surveying calculations and surveying methods.
Produce a report that explains the terminology that will be used when carrying out angular
surveys. In each case explain what the tool is used for and how it is used.
Setting out is done when building a new house, or when renovating an already existing one,
especially an extension. It is the process of developing the physical positions of corners and walls
of a building, and it’s done by transferring dimensions from the layout plan to the ground.
Corner Peg
Profile Boards
You should list three different ways of setting out, diagrams will probably be helpful when
describing the different methods.
Task 4 (P8): Set out and check corner pegs for a small building using appropriate equipment
and techniques.
Set out a small building to given plans and dimensions and judged on both getting the
building the correct size and in the correct location. You will need to perform this task in a
group of three people.
D B
Task 5 (M2): Use angular measurements and trigonometry to calculate heights and distances
Calculate the height of the building, the length of the wall, the distance between the building
and the instrument based upon your recorded results for P6. You must show your
calculations.
Task 6 (M3): Set out and check profiles for a small building
A rectangular buildings having plan sides of 75.36 and 23.24m was set out with its major axis
aligned precisely east-west. The design of the coordinates of the SE corner were (348.92,
591.76) and this corner was fixed by theodolite intersection from two stations P and Q whose
respective coordinate were (296.51, 540.32) and (371.30, 522.22). The other corners were
set out by similar methods. Angle α = 58 04’ 10” and = 58 33’ 20”
When setting out was completed, the sides and the diagonals of the building were measured
as a check. To help with this the existing ground levels at the four corners of the proposed
structure were determined by levelling:
Produce a written report that analyses the methods used to take angular measurements. The
report should include:
Description of triangulation
An explanation of common mistakes
Produce a short written report on the constraints of setting out sites, this should include:
Limitations of accuracy
Impact of bad weather (ground movement)

PRESENTATION
6. Your assignment should be word-processed and should not exceed from 2,000 to
2,500 words in length.
9. The assignment should contain a list of any references used in the report.
Check carefully the submission date and the instructions given with the assignment.
Late assignments may not be accepted.
Ensure that you give yourself enough time to complete the assignment by the due
date.
Do not leave things such as printing to the last minute – excuses of this nature will
not be accepted for failure to hand-in the work on time.
You must take responsibility for managing your own time effectively.
If you are unable to hand in your assignment on time and have valid reasons such
as illness, you may apply (in writing) for an extension.
Failure to achieve a PASS grade will results in a REFERRAL grade being given.
Take great care that if you use other people’s work or ideas in your assignment,
you properly reference them in your text and any bibliography.
NOTE: If you are caught plagiarising, the College policies and procedures will
apply.
