Assignment title Assignment 2 of 2: Measuring Angles and Setting Out

Scenario

In construction site, site surveying is need to the preliminary work, planning work and
construction work. Surveying is an essential part of any building project. By the end of this unit
you should be able to take and record accurate measurements using a variety of equipment and
methods. You will be able to use your knowledge of the surveying equipment to set out a site
and apply some of your knowledge from the maths unit in calculating distances.
Your role within the construction works is to produce drawings for planning of construction works
and setting out the building and control alignment of construction work. So, you have to be able
to use surveying instrument such that tape, levelling, electronic theodolite and total station for
measuring the horizontal and vertical distances, angles, bearings, azimuths and coordinates for
surveying stations and be able to perform surveying calculations and surveying methods.

Basic field operations performed by a surveyor involve angular measurements. Through

application of mathematics (geometry and trigonometry) and spatial information knowledge, the
surveyor converts these measurements to the horizontal and vertical relationships necessary to
produce maps, plans of engineering projects, or Geographical Information System/ Land
Information System (GIS/LIS).

Task 1 (P5): Identify angular terminology

Produce a report that explains the terminology that will be used when carrying out angular
surveys. In each case explain what the tool is used for and how it is used.

Task 2 (P6): Carry out angular measurements, using appropriate equipment

You have to carry out a range of tasks for a selected building.
1. Record height of the instrument
2. Record the measurements of vertical angle and horizontal angle
You need only carry out the measurements and there is no requirement for a drawing at this point
(other than updating the building plan). You should record for your calculations as evidence for
this task.

Setting out is done when building a new house, or when renovating an already existing one,
especially an extension. It is the process of developing the physical positions of corners and walls
of a building, and it’s done by transferring dimensions from the layout plan to the ground.

Task 3 (P7): Identify Setting Out terminology

Your boss has asked you to produce a report that will list the tools and terminology used
when setting out sites.
Describe the following equipment and terminology such as:
 Setting Out

Unit 10 SCCE A-2 JAN 2018 2

 Temporary Bench Mark

 Corner Peg

 Profile Boards
You should list three different ways of setting out, diagrams will probably be helpful when
describing the different methods.

Task 4 (P8): Set out and check corner pegs for a small building using appropriate equipment
and techniques.
Set out a small building to given plans and dimensions and judged on both getting the
building the correct size and in the correct location. You will need to perform this task in a
group of three people.

Task 5 (M2): Use angular measurements and trigonometry to calculate heights and distances

Calculate the height of the building, the length of the wall, the distance between the building
and the instrument based upon your recorded results for P6. You must show your
calculations.

Task 6 (M3): Set out and check profiles for a small building

A rectangular buildings having plan sides of 75.36 and 23.24m was set out with its major axis
aligned precisely east-west. The design of the coordinates of the SE corner were (348.92,
591.76) and this corner was fixed by theodolite intersection from two stations P and Q whose
respective coordinate were (296.51, 540.32) and (371.30, 522.22). The other corners were
set out by similar methods. Angle α = 58 04’ 10” and  = 58 33’ 20”

When setting out was completed, the sides and the diagonals of the building were measured
as a check. To help with this the existing ground levels at the four corners of the proposed
structure were determined by levelling:

Task 7 (D2): Analyse the methods used to take angular measurements in terms of trigonometric
accuracy

Produce a written report that analyses the methods used to take angular measurements. The
report should include:

 Description of triangulation
 An explanation of common mistakes

 An explanation of how accuracy changes with distance.

Task 8 (D3): Explain the constraints on the positioning of profiles

Produce a short written report on the constraints of setting out sites, this should include:

 Limitations of accuracy
 Impact of bad weather (ground movement)

 Effect on setting out on a working site

 Hazards and safety precautions
