標題 Total smoking ban is essential

11
Paragraph 1 1. 帶出題目

(介紹) Example: In recent years, the issue of total smoking ban has caused controversy in our
society.

2. 介紹正反觀點

Example: As for the business sector and investors, they believe that a territory-wide smoking
ban in all entertainment venues is detrimental to their business. However, others think that
if entertainment venues such as mahjong parlours are exempted, public health will be
jeopardized.

3. 清楚表明你的立場

Example: In my opinion, it is urgent for the government to implement total smoking ban in
Hong Kong. In the following, I will explain my arguments.

Paragraph 2 1. 標題句

(論點一) Example: To start with, we should note that the importance of health outweighs the
economic impact of imposing a total ban on smoking.

2. 詳細解釋 (普遍情況、個別例子、比較)

Example: It is apparent that smoking is harmful to our health. As we all know, smoking could
result in a few nasty side-effects, such as bad skin as well as poor breath and fitness. If we are
smokers, we will frequently pant after doing intense exercise. More importantly, smoking can
cause lung cancer and heart disease, which lead to death. According to scientific research in
recent years, second-hand smoke is even more toxic and fatal than first-hand smoke.

3. 總結句

Example: Therefore, preventing smokers from killing themselves and others, including both
customers and staff, is an urgent public health issue.

Many people suggest imposing a total smoking ban in our city. Write an article to express your view.

Paragraph 3 1. 標題句

(論點二) Example: In addition, total smoking ban can improve the safety in entertainment venues.

2. 詳細解釋 (普遍情況、數據、個別例子、比較)

Example: In Hong Kong, it is common to find these venues in the old buildings in old districts like
12
Sham Shui Po and Yau Ma Tei. As everyone knows, abandoned cigarettes often lead to fire. In
case of a fire, smoke can spread to different areas rapidly. To make the matters worse, the
evacuation routes of old buildings are sometimes blocked by rubbish. If a serious fire breaks out,
customers of entertainment venues will not be able to escape from the scene and heavy casualties
will result.

3. 總結句

Example: Hence, it is essential for the government to adopt total smoking ban.

Paragraph 4 1. 反方觀點

(駁論) Example: Despite the arguments above, many people still emphasize that territory-wide smoking
ban will significantly reduce the number of customers in entertainment venues and exacerbate the
unemployment problem.

2. 讓步,承認對方的觀點有一定的合理性

Example: Undeniably, the ban will adversely affect the business of these venues.

3. 反駁句

Example: Nevertheless, we should remember that the health cost of smoking is tremendous.

4. 詳細解釋 (普遍情況、數據、個別例子、比較)

Example: According to a research done by Hong Kong University, the annual cost of treating the
diseases related to smoking is over 5 billion dollars. As mentioned above, smoking is a culprit of
chronic diseases like lung cancer and heart disease. Since most people in Hong Kong consume
public medical services, the cost of treating smokers will pose a huge financial burden to our
government.

5. 總結句

Example: Considering the cost and benefits, territory-wide smoking ban should definitely be
implemented for the sake of the welfare of our whole society.

Paragraph 5 1. 重申立場,歸納所有論據

(總結) Example: In conclusion, the government should implement total smoking ban as it can safeguard
the health of the general public and prevent fire disasters. While it will engender short-term
economic pain, the colossal long-term cost of smoking will be minimized.

2. 對未來的展望
13
Example: Therefore, the government should not hesitate anymore. It should adopt the measure as
soon as possible.

HKDSE English 2014 Q4 (One-sided argumentative essay)

Learning English through Social Issues

Some people believe that filming movies in the city centre should not be allowed. Others support it. Write a

letter to the editor of the Hong Kong Daily giving your opinions. Provide three reasons to support your point of

view.

上款 Dear Editor

Paragraph 1 1. 寫信目的

開場白 I am writing to express my views on movie filming in the city centre.

2. 概述相反觀點

In view of the recent hot debates on this controversial issue, I understand that there are still

many concerns and worries about it.

1. 明確表明觀點

However, after considering the interests of citizens, our city’s development and the need of

promoting our local culture, I believe it is advisable for the government to give the green

light to the idea.

15
Paragraph 2 1. 標題句

To commence with, many Hong Kongers are movie fanatics and they would like movies to
論點 1
be filmed in the city centre, which is symbolic and meaningful to them.

2. 詳細解釋

In the old days, local movies gained popularity all over the world. Sad to say, the local

cinemas are now dominated by foreign movies like Hollywood films and Korean films. The

reason why local movies are lagging behind is that the sites where their filming is carried

out are not realistic and attractive enough to draw attention of the local audience.

To enable local movies to capture the hearts and minds of Hong Kong people, allowing

movies to be filmed in the city centre is necessary without a shadow of doubt. When films

are shot at distinctive local landmarks, like the IFC Tower in Central and the Clock Tower in

Tsim Sha Tsui, local residents will be more eager to watch them.

3. 總結句

Having a strong sense of belonging to the city, many Hong Kongers will proudly tell the

foreigners that our city has our own films too!

16
Paragraph 3 1. 標題句

It is also worth noting that allowing filming in the city centre can boost the movie industry
論點 2
and consolidate the sustainable development of the Hong Kong economy.

2. 詳細解釋

As everyone knows, Hong Kong is a cosmopolitan city recognized as a significant

international financial centre. Other than the financial industry, however, Hong Kong’s

development in other industries leaves a lot to be desired. Arguably, the overemphasis on

finance is detrimental to the sustainable development of Hong Kong.

For the sake of diversifying the local economy, it is essential for the cultural industry to be

promoted. While the government may find it difficult to conserve the cultural heritage

owing to limited land supply, it should do its utmost to facilitate the growth of the film

industry. Through promoting Hollywood movies can the USA earn billions of dollars every

year. In the same vein, the Hong Kong government should accelerate the development of

the local movie industry by allowing filming to take place in the city centre.

4. 總結句

In the long run, the Hong Kong economy will benefit immensely from the blossoming movie

industry.
17
Paragraph 4 1. 標題句

Furthermore, local movies filmed in the city centre can attract the attention of foreigners
論點 3
and promote the development of tourism.

2. 詳細解釋

Through watching our movies, foreign people will be able to capture the breathtaking

scenery of our city centre, ranging from the magnificent night view of the Victoria Harbour

to the dazzling street culture of Mong Kok. Besides, they can have a glimpse of the lifestyle

of Hong Kong people. When local movies featuring the beautiful places of Hong Kong are

circulated overseas, more and more foreigners will be galvanized to visit Hong Kong so that

they can understand more about our city, stimulating our tourist industry and bringing

enormous economic benefits to us.

3. 總結句

Through allowing movies to be filmed in the city centre , not only will Hong Kong enjoy

sustainable economic growth, our local culture and custom will also be promoted.
18
Paragraph 5 1. 承接上文

As mentioned above, filming movies in the city centre can stimulate the development of
駁論
tourism and sustain local economic growth.

2. 相反觀點

Some people may put forward the idea that filming movies in the city centre would create

disturbance for citizens, affecting the normal operation of our city.

3. 讓步

Undeniably, this may be true in some cases.

4. 反駁句

Nonetheless, we should recognize that the effects are temporary.

5. 詳細解釋

It is worth remembering that the shooting of local movies are often carried out for short

duration, for example, for one to two weeks. More importantly, as a responsible government

and citizens who truly love Hong Kong and safeguard the interests of Hong Kong, they should

place the city’s long-term prosperity at the top of the priority list. If filming is allowed in the

city centre, the movie industry and hence the tourist industry will become the pillars of the

Hong Kong economy, sustaining our economic development in the long run.

6. 總結句

Surely, the tremendous economic benefits brought by filming in the city centre will

significantly outweigh the short-term pain suffered from by local citizens.

19
Paragraph 6 1. 總結論點

Judging from the above aspects, it is crystal clear that allowing filming in the city centre
結論
does more good than harm to Hong Kong.

2. 諒解市民疑;慮

While I understand that the government has to strike a balance between development and

citizens’ interests, everyone can rest assured that promoting our filming industry will benefit

citizens in the long run. It is definitely going to be a blessing for all.

3. 對未來的期盼

So why still hesitate? Let’s take swift action now to allow filming movies in the city centre. I

am looking forward to seeing the blossoming of the local movie industry and watching local

movies that can showcase the beauty of Hong Kong to the world.

Some people believe that filming movies in the city centre should not be allowed. Others support it. Write a

view.

上款 Dear Editor

Paragraph 1 1. 寫信目的

開場白 I am writing in support of filming movies in Hong Kong.

2. 概述相反觀點

Recently, there has been news about the local citizens having conflicts with people filming

movies in Central. They claim filming movies causes disturbance to their lives, and thus they

believe that filming movies in the city centre should be prohibited.

3. 明確表明觀點

Yet, after considering both the merits and demerits of filming movies in Hong Kong in the

long run, it is my conviction that it should be allowed.

21
Paragraph 2 1. 標題句

To commence with, filming movies in the city centre can attract more tourists to come to
論點 1

Hong Kong.

2. 詳細解釋

This is simply because during the filming process, the environment of the city centre will be

utilized as the background of the films, which will then be circulated in different countries

worldwide, including Britain, Australia, the USA and Japan thanks to globalization. Not only

do people in these countries gain a better understanding of Hong Kong, they may also flock

to Hong Kong owing to the dazzling local culture. A forceful illustration is that if the movies

filmed spot the local food culture such as stinky tofu, egg puffs and fake shark fin soup in

Mong Kok, they may find the food appealing and would like to visit Hong Kong. Apparently,

filming movies in the city centre is conducive to promoting Hong Kong’s local culture to

people from all over the globe. As a consequence, more tourists would swarm to Hong

Kong, boosting its tourism by leaps and bounds.

3. 總結句

With the ripple effect on all walks of life, local economic development can be stimulated

and the quality of life of Hong Kong people can be improved.

22
Paragraph 3 1. 標題句
Another point to be noted is that allowing movies to be filmed in the city centre is beneficial
論點 2
to enhancing Hong Kong’s reputation and image internationally.

2. 詳細解釋
Echoes of the Rainbow, which is a movie filmed in Wing Lee Street, was awarded an

honourable prize at the 2010 Berlin Film Festival. After that different media groups such as

New York Times, BBC and Yahoo News reported the news worldwide. As a result, Hong

Kong has gained popularity internationally. With this in mind, it doesn’t take much to realize

that if the movies filmed in the city centre are awarded prizes, Hong Kong can grab the

world’s attention as it once did.

3. 總結句
This, without doubt, can promote Hong Kong as a cosmopolitan city, enhancing its image

and reputation.

Paragraph 4 1. 標題句
Alongside boosting Hong Kong’s prestige, in no way should we overlook another benefit –
論點 3
local citizens can broaden their horizons about movies.

2. 詳細解釋
As we all know, local citizens rarely have chances to watch movie filming in Hong Kong.

Movies, be it the local ones or the international ones, are usually filmed overseas.

Nevertheless, if there is an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that movies can be filmed in the

beautiful city centre, Hong Kong indisputably should grasp this precious chance.

Consequently, Hong Kong’s citizens can gain an insight about how movies are filmed. What

is more worth noticing is that they can witness the breathtaking scenes of the movies

through their eyes instead of the eyes of the camera and they can witness renowned movie

stars including Angelina Jolie, Emma Watson and Jay Chou!

3. 總結句
Under this line of thinking, it is an incontestable truth that allowing movies in the city centre

enables local citizens to broaden their horizons and widen their perspective.
23
Paragraph 5 1. 相反觀點

Those opposing my stance may claim that filming movies in the city centre causes severe
駁論
disturbance to the local people, such as traffic jams and the closure of shops.

2. 讓步 + 反駁

However reasonable this argument seems to be, we should think about the following

questions: Is the inconvenience temporary or permanent? Do people enjoy watching famous

stars acting? Do the opportunities that movies are filmed in the city centre always exist?

What I believe is that the long-term benefits significantly outweigh the short-term pain of

filming movies for one to weeks.

3. 總結句

For the sake of Hong Kong’s long term development and citizens’ interests, filming movies in

the city centre should definitely be allowed.

Paragraph 6 1. 總結論點

All in all, taking all aspects into consideration, it is my firm conviction that filming movies in the
結論
city centre should be allowed. We should bear in mind: It is the movies filmed in the city

centre that can attract tourists to flock to Hong Kong and benefit the economy; it is the movies

filmed in the city centre that can boost Hong Kong’s reputation and image internationally; it is

the movies filmed in the city centre that can enable local citizens to broaden their horizons.

2. 對未來的期盼

After all, this is a precious opportunity that cannot be missed by Hong Kong.

HKDSE English 2014 Q5 (Letter to the principal)

Learning English through debating Currently, only a small number of students in your school have access to school

lockers. As the chairperson of the Student Union of your school, you have collected the views of students from

different classes on this issue. Write a letter to Ms Lee, your school Principal, to persuade her to change the policy

on lockers.

上款 Dear Ms Lee,

Paragraph 1 1. 寫信目的 + 代表機構

介紹 I am writing to venture my opinion on the policy on lockers on behalf of the Student Union.

2. 概述問題

Recently, we have collected the views of schoolmates of different classes on the issue of

allowing only few schoolmates to have access to school lockers. After analyzing the views

collected, it can be concluded that most schoolmates are opposed to such a policy.

3. 表達期望

We hope that the school can change the policy on lockers owing to convenience and fairness.
26
Paragraph 2 1. 標題句

To commence with, changing the policy on lockers can bring convenience to all
理據 1
schoolmates.

2. 詳細解釋

Every day, all schoolmates need to carry a large pile of textbooks, the weight of which is too

heavy even for an adult, let alone a teenager with underdeveloped muscles. Regarding

junior form students, they have multiple Physical Education lessons and Home Economics

lessons every week. The tools, the materials and the uniform involved result in schoolmates

carrying two to three handbags, in addition to their schoolbags. Other than the great

inconvenience caused to junior form schoolmates, their senior form counterparts also

suffer. With a view to preparing for the HKDSE, many senior form students have to attend

supplementary lessons at school and extra lessons at tutorial centres. We can imagine how

clumsy it is for a teenager to carry a heavy school bag and two environmentally-friendly

handbags packed with teaching materials and rush to the MTR station nearby after school.

Apparently, the burden that schoolmates shoulder is unbearable.

3. 總結句

Changing the policy on lockers will definitely making going to school more convenient for

schoolmates and alleviate the aforementioned problems.

27
Paragraph 3 1. 標題句

In addition to convenience, impartiality is essential, if not indispensable, concerning the

理據 2
locker policy.

2. 詳細解釋

Due to the fact that only the athletes representing the sports teams of the school can have

access to school lockers, they are considered superior in other schoolmates’ eyes. According

to the views collected, many schoolmates aired their grievances about the favouritism of

teachers towards the athletes regarding their exclusive right to use the school lockers. Not

being equally treated, many students have developed a sense of inferiority and hatred

towards the elite athletes. Not only will this phenomenon jeopardize normal schoolmates’

self-esteem, the harmonious atmosphere of the school will be destroyed given the great

discontent towards the athletes.

3. 總結句

In a bid to rectify the above problems, changing the policy on lockers to allow access by all

schoolmates is crucial as it can uphold the fairness and equality in our school.
28
Paragraph 4 1. 相反觀點

Some teachers may claim that changing the locker policy will lead to chaos when all
駁論
students gather around lockers for taking out various textbooks and materials prior to the

commencement of lessons.

2. 讓步

Undeniably, it may take our schoolmates some time to get their textbooks from the lockers.

3. 反駁句

Nevertheless, we should recognize that this will not necessarily lead to chaos as long as

students are disciplined.

4. 詳細解釋

With the courteous attitude of all of our schoolmates, we believe they are self-disciplined

enough to line up in an orderly manner when getting their personal belongings from the

lockers. On condition that the lockers are designed systematically according to schoolmates’

class numbers and the location of their seats, the whole process will be smooth. It is also

worth remembering that there is a 10-minute interval between each lesson. Evidently, the

adequate time available for our students will prevent chaos.

5. 總結句

Therefore, changing the school policy on lockers will not disrupt the normal operation of

our school.
29
Paragraph 5 1. 總結理據

To conclude, equal access to lockers can provide our schoolmates with convenience and
結論
ensure that every student is treated impartially regardless of their capabilities.

2. 期望改變政策

Hence, we sincerely hope that the school can address the concerns of schoolmates by

changing the policy on lockers and create a more favourable environment for all of us.

Yours sincerely,

Chris Wong

Many parts of Hong Kong’s harbour front are still undeveloped. Some suggest using these areas for housing and

commercial use, while others argue that such areas should be left as open space for public use. Write to the editor

of the Hong Kong Daily stating your opinion either for or against leaving these areas open for public use. Justify

your point of view with three reasons.

上款 Dear Editor,

Paragraph 1 1. 陳述正反觀點

Tung Chung, Kwun Tong, Central, Sai Kung, to name but a few – these places all bear a striking
介紹

resemblance of their undeveloped harbour front. Recently, a controversy has been stirred up on

whether the harbour front should be open for public use or used as commercial buildings or

housing, and some even contend that utilizing the harbour front for commercial and residential

purposes is more beneficial to Hong Kong.

2. 明確表達立場

After considering both the benefits and drawbacks, it is my firm conviction that leaving the

harbour front as public use is a more sensible choice in the long run.

Paragraph 2 1. 標題句

To commence with, leaving the harbour front for public use can preserve the natural environment.
論點一
2. 詳細解釋論點

Nowadays, Hong Kong has long been stigmatized as a concrete jungle, suggesting that undue

emphasis has been laid on commercial development and housing provision in Hong Kong. On the
31
other hand, the fact that Hong Kong has a myriad of natural “hidden gems” in the havour front is

not recognized by most local people. By leaving the harbour front for public use, these precious

elements of the environment can be exposed to the public, adding spice to this metropolis. With

the harbour front left open, the mudskippers can continue to thrive in the mud of Ting Chung

coast; with the harbour front left open, the mangroves in Tai O can display their tenacity when

they are facing desiccation and flooding on the same day; and with the harbour front left open, the

black-faced spoonbill can escape from the destiny of extinction. It is leaving the harbour front for

public use that can preserve the biodiversity of Hong Kong. On the contrary, flattening the harbour

front for commercial and residential development could do nothing but demolish the habitat of the

precious organisms, causing some of them to become extinct.

3. 總結句

Under this line of thinking, it is evident that leaving the harbour front for public use should prevail.
32
Paragraph 3 1. 標題句

It should also be noted that the harbour front can provide a channel for citizens to escape from
論點二

the hustle and bustle of life.

2. 詳細解釋論點

Treating work as the be all and end all of their lives, most Hong Kongers, if not all, are often

drained in their hectic lives. With the harbour front left open for public use , they can recharge

their batteries, thus effectively relieving their tremendous pressure. With the harbour front left

open for public use, people can be engrossed in the stunning view of sunrise when walking along

the coast in Sai Kung in the early morning; people can blow off some steam by swimming along

the beach on Lantau Island. With this in mind, it is clear that leaving the coastal area for public

use can provide relaxation for Hong Kongers. On the contrary, utilizing the harbour front for

commercial and residential purposes sacrifices the magnificent view in the coastal area, as only a

minority of affluent tycoons can enjoy the privilege of such absorbing view.

3. 總結句

Isn’t it ludicrous that we have to limit our choice of relaxation to the rich, when there is desperate

demand for the harbour front ordinary people in society?

33
Paragraph 4 1. 陳述反方觀點

Naysayers may criticize my stance, contending that there has long been a dearth of land in Hong
駁論

Kong for commercial and residential buildings. Therefore, there is a pressing need for utilizing the

harbour front.

2. 承認反方觀點的合理性 + 反駁句

Though this argument is reasonable at the first glance, it is fundamentally flawed.

3. 詳細解釋

In fact, there are many alternatives to come to grips with the shortage of land, reclamation and

urban renewal included. Is it a must that we have to sacrifice the precious harbour front to rectify

the deep-rooted problem? In addition to this, the destruction of the natural environment is

beyond retrieval and will provoke backlash from the public. The storm of controversy sparked by

the construction of an artificial beach in Long Mei is a case in point. Is it really worthwhile if we

pay a much higher cost of protecting the environment in the future if we opt for momentary

benefit in the short run?

4. 總結句

Thus, it is apparently clear that the government should leave the harbour front for public use.
34
Paragraph 5 1. 重申立場,歸納所有論據

All in all, in no way should we allow the harbour front to be developed with commercial
總結

buildings and residential buildings. It is leaving the harbour front for public use that can

preserve the environment. It is leaving the harbour front for public use that does not inflict

irreparable damage.

2. 對未來的展望

It is to be hoped that our invaluable harbour front can be preserved in a way that is beneficial

to the environment as well as all of us.

Paragraph 1 1. 陳述正反觀點

HOS flats or an open plaza for relaxing gatherings? Lucrative skyscrapers or a great area for Tai

chi and mass dance? Another IFC or a place for enjoying Hong Kong’s harbour front? Given that

many parts Hong Kong’s harbour front are still undeveloped, some suggest using these areas for

housing and commercial use. While some heap praise on the idea, believing that the increased

housing and office supply can drive down property prices and office rent, some oppose it for such

areas should be left as open space for public use.

2. 明確表達立場

After careful consideration of the issue as a whole, it is my firm conviction that developing these

areas into public open space is desirable, if not essential.

Paragraph 2 1. 標題句

To commence with, leaving the harbour front as open space can slow down Hong Kongers’ living
論點一

pace, hence improving their health.

2. 詳細解釋論點
36
In this city of hustle and bustle, people work from day till night in order to earn a living, causing

them to forget the importance of leisure and rest. Owing to the little public open space in the city,

people are buried in a community filled with flats and offices and have little chance to relax and

exercise. With public open space in the harbour front , people will find it more convenient to have a

place for leisure. Some of them, attracted by the mesmerizing harbour view, simply can pay a visit

to the open space for a chat with friends, which allows people to put down their work for a while

and breathe in some fresh air. Some of them may even participate in the various activities available

in the open space, such as mass dance and Tai Chi. Take mainland China as an example. It is easy

for us to find people dancing joyfully in some public open space along with music with catchy

beats. This is known as “Plaza Dance”, whose participants include children, off-work adults and the

elderly. Therefore, it is patent that some residents in Hong Kong will be able to enjoy themselves in

these activities, allowing them to exercise a bit and stretch their muscles. Conversely, leaving the

harbour front for housing and commercial use further highlights the city’s undue emphasis on

money and work. Continuing to bury their heads in piles of work, people will be in lack of leisure,

rest and exercise, thus exacerbating their health.

4. 總結句

As we can see, leaving the harbour front as open space allows Hong Kongers to enjoy better health

by providing them more opportunities of recharging their batteries.

Paragraph 3 1. 標題句

It should also be noted that the idea of having open space in the harbour front can maintain Hong
論點二
Kong’s competitiveness as an attractive tourist destination.

2. 詳細解釋論點

Hong Kong is famous for its stunning harbour view. Instead of purchasing products in high-end
37
shopping arcades, which are ubiquitous around the globe, it is the magnificent scenery of Victoria

Harbour that captures the heart and mind of millions of tourists. Through leaving the harbour

front as open space can visitors have the perfect spot for watching the fascinating harbour and the

glistening skyscrapers in Central and Tsim Sha Tsui. It is also worth noting that foreigners, who

often place strong emphasis on work-life balance, will definitely appreciate the city’s provision of

open space for playing sports and enjoying a family picnic. On the contrary, the construction of a

high density of residential and commercial buildings in the harbour front will disappoint the

tourists, leaving them the impression that Hong Kong is a hectic concrete jungle in lack of leisure

and recreation. With a view to pursuing spiritual relaxation, many tourists may opt for tourist

destinations ranging from Phuket to Maldives, which are renowned for their picturesque beaches

and serenity. In the long run, Hong Kong’s tourist industry will decline, leading to the loss of

employment opportunities and economic stagnation.

4. 總結句

Evidently, for the sake of the sustainable development of our tourism, leaving the harbour front

as open space should prevail over constructing residential and commercial buildings.
38
Paragraph 4 1. 陳述反方觀點

Critics may counter my stance and pinpoint that utilizing the harbour front for housing and
駁論
commercial development can boost the supply of flats and offices and pull down property prices

and rents, alleviating local citizens’ financial burden.

2. 承認反方觀點的合理性

At first glance, this argument seems to be valid. But in fact, it is divorced from reality.

3. 反駁句

It should be noted that the soaring property prices should not be attributed to the shortage of flats

and offices.

4. 詳細解釋

According to newspaper reports, there is a large amount of vacant flats and offices in our city. The

truth is that local people and investors from the mainland are stockpiling property for speculation

proposes, driving up their prices. To lessen the financial burden of the public, the government

should penalize speculators by introducing “triple stamp duty” and reserve a significant portion

of flats for local people’s residential purposes similar to Singapore. In order to satisfy citizens’

housing demand in the long run, the government can also develop land in Southern Yuen Long

and Tuen Mun, which are known for their large areas of idle flatland. In other words, there are

many other ways to mitigate the problem of skyrocketing property and office prices instead of

developing residential areas and commercial areas in the harbour front.

5. 總結句

In light of the public demand for leisure and the sustainable development of the tourist industry, it

is of paramount importance for the government to leave the harbour front for public use.
39
Paragraph 5 1. 重申立場,歸納所有論據

To sum up, the idea of building more flats and offices pales in comparison with that of
總結

leaving the harbour front as public open space. It is the open space in the harbour front that

can relax citizens’ mind and it is the open space in the harbour front that can sustain the

prosperity of our tourism.

2. 對未來的展望

It is to be hoped that the government can take the long-term development of Hong Kong into

consideration and transform our beautiful harbour front into a paradise of tranquility and

recreation!

Many Hong Kong graduates complain about the lack of employment opportunities in the city. It has been

suggested that graduates who fail to find a job in Hong Kong could look for opportunities in other cities in Asia.

Do you support this suggestion? Write an article for your school magazine expressing your views. Give three

reasons to support your views. Provide an appropriate title for your article.

標題 Don’t leave your hometown, youngsters

Paragraph 1 1. 交代背景

Hong Kong prides itself on being a prosperous and an affluent city, but to many young people, it is
介紹

actually a place where they cannot even find a job. As the number of unemployed graduates has

spiralled recently, it has been suggested that they could look for opportunities in other Asian

cities.

2. 明確表達立場

Although the suggestion may sound palatable, personally I do not support it.
41
Paragraph 2 1. 標題句

To commence with, it is difficult for local young graduates to find suitable jobs in Asian cities.
論點一
2. 詳細解釋論點

True, to many fresh graduates, especially those not equipped with a university degree, it is such a

formidable task to look for a job in Hong Kong due to the cut-throat competition here. However, is

finding a decent, well-paid job in other Asian cities such a cushy task? Those who answer “yes”

should not hesitate to take a glimpse of the high youth unemployment rate in Japan and its

economic problems. Korea, another seemingly possible destination, is a country whose economy

relies heavily on the tourist industry. In Korea, teenagers may not be able to find a suitable job

they want so effortlessly.

3. 總結句

I am worried that going to Asian cities to instigate new opportunities may not bring young

graduates a rosy future, but instead create more uncertainties and hindrance to their long-term

development.

Paragraph 3 1. 標題句

Apart from the difficulty in getting a suitable job there , youngsters may not want to work in other
論點二
Asian cities as they are unfamiliar with them.

2. 詳細解釋論點

To them, Hong Kong is their cozy home where they are raised and nurtured. It is natural and

understandable that some of them would like to develop their careers in the place which they

know well. It is undeniable that they might learn to be more independent and tough if they work

alone in other Asian cities. However, this may not be what they long for – some of them may not

be willing to leave their families and friends just for work. After all, work is an intrinsic part of our

lives but it is certainly not everything.

42
Paragraph 4 1. 標題句

Besides the reasons mentioned above, let’s look into the issue from another point of view: is it
論點三
conducive to Hong Kong’s long-term development if the jobless leave and join the labour force of

other Asian cities?

2. 詳細解釋論點

If the talented work in other countries, they cannot make contributions to the betterment of our

society. The qualities they possess – the savvy they acquire and the practical skills they learn in

Hong Kong – will become haven-sent gifts to other Asian cities. Then, how can Hong Kong compete

with Singapore and Shanghai, which are catching up in terms of economic development? How can

Hong Kong retain its position as a renowned business metropolis? How can we develop new ideas

and make improvement without the group of vibrant, creative and diligent adults?
Paragraph 5 1. 陳述反方觀點

Some people believe that if unemployed youngsters could find opportunities in Asian cities and
駁論
move to work there, there will be less discontent in our society.

2. 承認反方觀點的合理性 + 反駁句

This argument is seemingly valid, but in reality preposterous.

3. 詳細解釋

If everyone is prepared to leave the city for work after graduation, I am worried that citizens’ sense

of belonging to Hong Kong will be greatly weakened. They may no longer regard Hong Kong as

their cozy home, but merely a town where they study temporarily. This surely poses a threat to

us, with our unity and bond being ruined. Then, how can we support each other and surmount

every obstacle together?

43
Paragraph 6 1. 重申立場,歸納所有論據 I

I believe that encouraging young people to look for chances in other Asian cities is not a panacea
總結
to the youth unemployment problem in Hong Kong. It is just putting the cart before the horse.

2. 對未來的展望

I hope local employers in Hong Kong will give youngsters more opportunities when possible, so

that they will have a chance to make contributions to the place where they belong to.

all at the moment, but it is certainly nothing new that many local graduates are complaining about

the lack of employment opportunities here.

2. 明確表達立場

I support the suggestion that those who fail to get a job in Hong Kong could look for opportunities

in other cities in Asia, and I would like to justify my stance in terms of the current situation, the

attractiveness of other cities and feasibility.

45
Paragraph 2 1. 標題句

Their claim, to commence with, is not groundless. It is true that the city lacks opportunities for
論點一

young people, in particular fresh graduates.

2. 詳細解釋論點

Since the 1980s, Hong Kong has been transforming into a knowledge-based economy and an

international financial centre. So far, so good. The problem is, in spite of many commentators’

suggestions that the HKSAR government should take measures to diversify the economy, Hong

Kong at present is still reliant heavily on the “Four Pillars” and such industries as Information

Technology and biotechnology are either immature or neglected. What are the implications for

local graduates? Well, you should not have any difficulty in developing your career if you engage in

those dominant and prosperous industries, but if you do not excel in or are interested in being an

i-banker or an accountant, it is pretty sure you will face a hard time seeking a job alone. That is

why despite the low overall unemployment rate, many graduates are unable to land a job, not to

mention a decent one. In addition, under globalization, Hong Kong faces fierce competition from

cities and regions all over the world. A company can simply hire a foreign graduate instead if it

finds you relatively less competitive. It may even move the whole production lines to other regions

and render workers specializing in a particular stage of production unemployed.

3. 總結句

Thus, seeking jobs in other cities is probably a must for quite a number of graduates.

Paragraph 3 1. 標題句

In contrast, other cities in Asia offer more opportunities for our graduates.
論點二
46
2. 詳細解釋論點

For instance, unlike Hong Kong, Taipei is a hub of technology and IT talents or workers who

specialize in, say, the production of semiconductors, can easily secure a job there. Not only do

many Asian cities have a more diversified economy, but entrepreneurship is also valued there,

compared to Hong Kong. Take Singapore as an example. A vibrant start-up culture can be

observed in the Lion City. You need not be an employee provided that you have some innovative

ideas that may revolutionize our way of life. You may even be able to start your own business if an

investor deems your proposal sound and workable. In other words, you are creating opportunities

for yourself, so to speak. Some might argue that it is unnecessary and perhaps even

counterproductive to seek jobs in other Asian cities. If you can’t even get a job in your city, do you

consider yourself to be so competitive as to be hired by employers in other cities, not to mention

the fact that you are put at a disadvantage compared to the locals owing to cultural differences? I

beg to differ. Admittedly, there is no guarantee that you will land a job elsewhere, yet what our

graduates is another opportunity. Why not explore more possibilities if staying home isn’t going to

do you any good? Perhaps your talent is not recognized and appreciated in Hong Kong. Who

knows? Try it, and at least you won’t regret.

47
Paragraph 4 1. 標題句

Apart from the comparison between Hong Kong and other Asian cities, feasibility is also a major
論點三

consideration.

2. 詳細解釋論點

Doubting if our graduates are capable of adapting to the lifestyles of other cities? I can assure you

that we should never underestimate the abilities and potential of local graduates. For a start,

language skills give our students an edge over other competitors. I have witnessed the language

proficiency of many of my classmates in English and Putonghua, which is, in my opinion,

stunningly fantastic. This can no doubt be attributed to the colonial rule of the British government

and the handover in 1997. As an international city, Hong Kong has nurtured graduates with the so-

called “global vision”. Seldom have I heard of someone who knows nothing about international

affairs, for example, the Paris terrorist attack last year. Most local graduates have a certain, if not

high awareness of the things taking place all around the world. Having lived in a cosmopolitan

metropolis since birth also endows us with cultural tolerance among our graduates. Despite the

news that some locals are dissatisfied with the uncivilized behaviour of a few mainland tourists,

most Hong Kong people, generally speaking, are rational and open to other cultures, and seldom, if

at all, discriminate against others based on race or sexual orientation.

3. 總結句

That is why I believe our graduates are capable of adapting to the cultures and social norms of

other Asian cities pretty well, given their willingness to respect the local traditions and customs.

Paragraph 1 1. 交代背景

Recent studies conducted by Ming Pao have suggested that the recent economic downturn has

made local graduates struggle to find jobs in Hong Kong. The same study also demonstrated that

the economic boom in certain places has spawned more job opportunities. Cities such as

Shanghai, Singapore, Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur are home to a myriad of job opportunities in

different fields, inclusive of the hotel business, retail business, finance business, you name it.

2. 明確表達立場

College graduates from Hong Kong, who specialize in these fields, should seize these valuable

opportunities as they are not only beneficial to their career, but also to their life.
50
Paragraph 2 1. 標題句

The capability of university graduates is why they are advised to find jobs in other Asian cities.
論點一
2. 詳細解釋論點

Developing countries in the region, including Malaysia and Indonesia, are longing for overseas

professionals to help them develop the countries in different aspects, be it logistics or finance. In

Hong Kong, the provision of degree or applied learning courses based on the fields mentioned

above is prominent, and hence Hong Kong graduates are highly competitive in this regard and are

able to thrive should they find jobs in those fields. Additionally, the proficiency of English and

Mandarin possessed by the majority of graduates also gives rise to their competitiveness. English

language, which is incorporated into the New Senior Secondary curriculum, makes

communication in foreign cities like Singapore convenient, demolishing the communication

barriers between the two places. We have a lot to expect from the city whose English proficiency is

high. The ability to speak Mandarin also eases communication in mainland cities which are swiftly

growing, like Beijing and Guangzhou. Even these places are far superior to Hong Kong in terms of

job opportunities, and if graduates have the ability, they should consider these options.
51
Paragraph 3 1. 標題句

Security of employment is another important factor that makes working in other Asian cities

attractive.

2. 詳細解釋論點

The growing economy, the expanding market and the improving working environment enable

other cities in Southeast Asia to provide an insane number of job opportunities. In contrast, the

market in Hong Kong is so saturated that hardly could one find a job. The vast number of jobs in

Asian cities allows Hong Kong graduates to find a job easily. The growing wages in the region also

appeal to local graduates. With cities in Southeast Asia shifting their focus to high value-added

industries instead of the mass production industries, the pay in these countries is extremely

rewarding and is bound to increase. Who would not want to work stably while earning a lot?

3. 總結句

Working in other Asian cities is therefore recommended for Hong Kong graduates especially when

they have the abilities.

52
Paragraph 4 1. 標題句

Other than monetary incentives, working in other Asian cities can also expose local graduates to

foreign cultures.

2. 詳細解釋論點

Studying in Hong Kong, graduates rarely have time to experience other cultures besides those

existing in Hong Kong. Devoid of adequate opportunities, the development of Hong Kong

graduates’ global vision is likely to be hampered, Working in other Asian cities, they are almost

limited to staying and living in that specific city, and through this experience can they broaden

their horizons. During holidays, they can participate in various local festivals by which they can

deepen their understanding of the city’s culture. Living in a city where everyone speaks a different

language from yours, say Malay, Thai, Japanese and Korean, they are granted chances to learn

and master foreign languages, which makes them even more competitive and their stay more

enjoyable. Enjoying local cuisines, they could as well experience in person the huge differences

between the lifestyles in Hong Kong and other cities. Even places as close as Taiwan and Macau

have cultures which are distinct from that in Hong Kong.

Learning English through Debating

It has recently been reported that some parents in Asian countries are installing apps on their children’s mobile
phones that monitor their activities to ensure that they use these devices responsibly.

Write a letter to the Young Post stating whether you agree with these parents’ actions or not. Justify your
position with three reasons.

上款 Dear Editor,

Paragraph 1 1. 交代背景

The phenomenon that Asian parents are installing apps on their children’s smartphones to monitor
介紹

their activities in order to ensure these youngsters use these devices responsibly has aroused

much concern. Advocates proclaim that parents can in turn protect their children from using

these gadgets uncontrollably. Yet, skeptics insist this is detrimental to teenagers’ sense of

empowerment and harms their privacy.

2. 明確表達立場

While people’s view is divergent, I support the idea these parents’ actions are reasonable and

advisable. In this letter, I am writing to explain my viewpoint.

55
Paragraph 2 1. 標題句

Of all the reasons why I agree to the Asian parents’ action, none are as significant as the fact that it
論點一

prevents children from using their smart gadgets for an unreasonably long period.

2. 詳細解釋論點

It is universally known that teenagers these days lack self-restraint. Given that the cyber world is

full of attractive information, adolescents are attached to their smart devices. Have you ever seen

kids around you sticking to their smartphones for the whole MTR trip without having a look of

the beautiful scenery outside the train? I am sure everyone has experienced it before. With this

in mind, it is the parents’ responsibility to help teenagers develop a proper usage of phones. By

installing these monitoring apps, parents can get information about the time their beloved sons

and daughters spend on the hand-sized gadgets. With the information, adults can have a

meaningful chat with the young generation and voice their concern. Perhaps the duos can set up

rules together after that. It prevents teenagers from being mastered by the mobile phones – they

should master them instead. As a result, parents can adjust their children’s exposure to the

phones and the young kids can develop an ideal habit of using them. They can therefore spare

more time for other essential elements, be it doing sports, developing their artistic potential or

volunteering.

3. 總結句

Judging from this, it is reasonable for Asian parents to install these apps in their children’s phones.
56
Paragraph 3 1. 標題句

Apart from preventing children being engulfed by the evil smart devices, never should we
論點二

overlook the fact that install apps can deter children from acting improperly on the Internet.

2. 詳細解釋論點

In this technological era, the new generation loves using smartphones to visit social networking

sites. Unfortunately, they may do something improperly, such as cyberbullying. If parents don’t

have the power to monitor children’s usage of their phone, it is unlikely for them to figure out

what their children have done online. With the help of the apps on adolescents’ phones, parents

will notice it immediately once the adolescents begin their act. In this sense, youngsters may think

twice before acting inappropriately. This prevents them from going astray due to irrational

thoughts, helping them to develop their morality. Preventing the young generation acting

improperly is also remunerative in terms of their future career – an increasing number of

international companies like Google check the job seekers’ online comments. In other words,

preventing youngsters from behaving poorly on the Internet can safeguard their future career

development.

4. 總結句

So, why don’t we take these benefits into consideration and support the caring parents’ action?
57
Paragraph 4 1. 標題句

On top of keeping children away from acting inappropriately on the Internet, installing apps on
論點三

their mobile phones is also crucial to protecting them from unhealthy information, which is readily

available on the Internet.

2. 詳細解釋論點

In this day and age, people can upload any information to the Internet freely. By browsing the

web, teenagers are likely to be exposed to stuffs that may distort their value judgment. Take the

game apps as an example. Recently, some app-designing companies have introduced a game

requiring players to decide the way to help a girl to carry out plastic surgery. In the game, the

main character has tried to have a plastic surgery to improve her appearance. Teenagers may be

led to believe that physical appearance is the only way to define the beauty of a person and

ignore the inner beauty. Judging a book from its cover is not advisable. If we allow them to

immerse in a virtual environment which is filled with these distorted values, what will they

become? How will our future be? It is also omnipresent to see phone apps containing sex scenes.

Parents should definitely install apps to monitor their children’s usage of phones.

5. 總結句

In an attempt to protect them from the dangerous cyber world, it is both conducive to the

teenagers themselves and the future of our society.

58
Paragraph 5 1. 重申立場,歸納所有論據

For the reasons above, encouraging parents to install apps on their children’s phones for
總結
monitoring their activities is vital for preventing them from being addicted to it and hurting others

on the Internet. This can also separate the vulnerable youngsters from the dangerous virtual

world.

3. 對未來的展望

It is hoped that the young generation can be wise mobile phone users and make full use of the

benefits they can derive from these smart devices so that they can carry these advantages over to

their careers in their life.

寫作目的

I am writing to express my opinion about some parents’ installation of monitoring apps on their
介紹

children’s mobile phones.

2. 交代背景

“Tiger moms”, “wolf dads”, “helicopter parents” – to name but just a few – these are all terms

describing Asian parents who make every endeavour to monitor or control the behaviour of their

children. Recently, it has been reported that some parents in Asian countries are installing apps on

their children’s mobile phones that monitor their activities to ensure their responsible use of these

devices. While some deem it reasonable and sensible, some see it unreasonable and absurd.

3. 明確表達立場

After meticulous consideration, it is my conviction that such an act is by no means beneficial to

the children and the family.

Paragraph 2 1. 標題句

To commence with, the installation of monitoring apps will hamper children’s development of self-
論點一

discipline.

2. 詳細解釋論點
60
Living in this technological era, it is public knowledge that self-discipline is of crucial significance

for there are much more temptations in society than before. Knowing how to distinguish between

right and wrong is thereby indispensable, especially for easily swayed young minds. Admittedly,

through installing the apps and paying heed to every act of teens on their electronic gadgets can

parents produce a deterrent effect in the short term, protecting them from falling victim to online

frauds or having minds perverted by inappropriate content. Yet, such effects are by no means

sustainable. Youngsters behave themselves only to avoid punishment from parents, rather than

understanding the importance of using devices responsibly. Consequently, many of them will fail

to avoid temptations in real life, where parents can no longer monitor them.
61
Paragraph 3 1. 標題句

Apart from impeding children’s development of self-discipline, under no circumstances should we

論點二

overlook the negative impact of installing monitoring apps poses to the relationship between

parents and children.

2. 詳細解釋論點

Due to long working hours, many parents lack time to communicate with their children, thus

having distant relationship with the latter. Further to this, under the influence of traditional

Chinese parenting as well as the grade-fixated education system in Asian countries, many parents

tend to lay emphasis on children’s academic achievement rather than expressing their love and

care when they are with their children after work. As a result, misunderstanding and conflicts crop

up more easily. In light of this, the act of installing apps to monitor children’s use of electronic

devices will exacerbate the current problems. Teenagers, who already hardly feel the love of their

parents, will deem such an act a lack of trust. They may then be more unwilling to open up to their

parents, or even intentionally act against their parents’ will to express their discontent, doing

irreparable harm to their relationship with parents.

3. 總結句

Under this line of thinking, isn’t it farcical to install monitoring apps given it may wreak havoc on

the most precious parent-child relationship?

62
Paragraph 4 1. 陳述反方觀點

Supporters of the act may counter my stance, holding the view that it can ensure children use
駁論
their phones properly, lowering their chance of being submerged in the virtual world and thus

have better time management.

2. 承認反方觀點的合理性 + 反駁句

While this argument is reasonable at first glance, it is in fact fundamentally flawed when closely

examined. Undeniably, such an act can prevent children from getting addicted to the use of

mobile phones in the beginning. However, does it necessarily mean that children will allocate their

time to studies or other meaningful use? With children’s immature mind, they may be obsessed

with playing online games and browsing the Internet on computers; With children’s immature

mind, they may still be hooked on watching television programmes; With children’s immature

mind, they may be vulnerable to the distractions and temptations in the real world.

3. 詳細解釋

In other words, it is simply difficult, if not impossible, to control teenagers’ responsible use of time.
Paragraph 5 1. 歸納全文論點

After the aforementioned analysis, it is manifest that the parents’ installation of monitoring apps
結論
on their children’s phones is in no way reasonable. We have to understand that this will deter

children from developing self-discipline and shatter the mutual trust between parents and children

while having minimal impact on controlling children’s use of time.

2. 期望作結

Thus, it is earnestly hoped that Asian parents can stop this futile act in no time. After all, parental

education is about love and care, rather than rules and supervision.

HKDSE 2017 Q6 (Debate Speech)

Learning English through Debating

As captain of the debate team you have been asked to write a debate speech. The task is to argue that

“Watching TV Makes Us Smarter”.

In your speech you should include three reasons to support the statement.

Write your speech.

打招呼 Adjudicators, the opponent team, ladies and gentlemen,

Paragraph 1 1. 交代背景

Good morning. Today’s motion is “Watching TV Makes Us Smarter”. Speaking of watching TV, I
介紹

believe some of you may have this picture in your mind – a lazy and obese guy lying on a sofa,

gobbling potato chips and gluing his eyes to the flashy screen of a television set in a dark room.

2. 明確表達立場

Although over-indulgence in the world of television can deal a great blow to our lives, our team

strongly believe that there are numerous benefits of watching television that can make us

smarter.
65
Paragraph 2 1. 標題句

First and foremost, watching television can widen our horizons and act as a platform for us to take
論點一

a glance at the world beyond our reach.

2. 背景

Especially for teenagers nowadays, who confine themselves inside the curriculum to excel in the

exams under this grade-fixated education system, television programmes can be a window for

them to know more about the real world and acquire knowledge that is beyond the scope of their

studies.

3. 詳細解釋論點

For example, documentaries like “A Man in the Wild”, “A Walk in Modern China” and “The

European Heights” feature landscapes of various continents and unveil the authentic lives of

natives and locals in different territories beyond our footsteps. Can you learn these from study

and work? Probably not. Therefore, apart from enjoying leisure and entertainment from TV shows,

we can also obtain insight of other aspects of life and widen our horizons. These help us get a

glimpse of the outside world and enrich our knowledge and understanding of the world, making

us smarter instead of being bookworms that only memorize the study materials for our exams.
66
Paragraph 3 1. 標題句

In addition to broadening our horizons, watching TV can enhance our understanding of social
論點二

issues, developing critical thinking skills in the course of scrutinizing controversies through TV

programmes.

2. 背景

Nowadays, thanks to the advancement of information technology , we can keep abreast of the

latest news through websites like Apple Daily, Mingpao, Time Magazine and Facebook. However,

as we glance through the brief descriptions of news headlines and we scroll down the page on our

dearest iPhones, do we truly understand the topic in detail? Obviously not.

3. 詳細解釋論點

In contrast, news reports on TV, or documentaries like “The Sunday Profile” offer an in-depth

analysis of social issues, be it the widening wealth gap in Hong Kong, the “One Belt One Road

Initiative” of China or the refugee crisis in Europe. In the shows, TV reporters interview political

experts and stakeholders of the issue to discuss the controversial social problems. Through

watching these TV programmes, we can develop our sense to think from multiple perspectives and

criticize the maladministration of the government. Convenient as it is, the critical skills can hardly

be cultivated by a cursory look on the electronic gadget on our palms.

4. 總結句

In this sense, watching TV is advantageous to honing our critical thinking, enabling us to develop a

deeper understanding of our society, and of course, making us smarter.

Paragraph 4 1. 標題句
67
論點三 Last but not least, watching TV can enhance our English proficiency, which is vitally important in

interpersonal communication.

2. 背景

In Hong Kong, which is dubbed as a “cultural melting pot”, English is indispensable in our daily

life, like workplace communication and socialization with foreigners.

3. 詳細解釋論點

Television, which offers English channels, helps us beef up our English listening and speaking skills.

Watching financial news every day, for example, can enhance our English vocabulary of various

issues, ranging from the governance of enterprises to the economic development in different

countries. Watching American soap dramas on Pearl and HMC can also enrich our English

vocabulary as we can learn the slangs and words used by foreigners in their scripts. As a

consequence, we can communicate effectively with foreigners.

4. 總結句

In this sense, watching TV shows can develop our language ability, which is beneficial to us and

makes us smarter.
68
Paragraph 4 1. 陳述反方觀點

The opponent may counter my stance, contending that indulging in soap dramas that teach us
駁論
nothing but romance and family conflicts is not beneficial and makes us ignorant, since we may

become obsessed with the virtual world in the TV series and forget about our real lives.

2. 反駁句

However, the argument is in fact flawed.

3. 詳細解釋

Obviously, over-indulgence in TV can pose serious drawbacks to our well-being and mindset.

However, if we utilize the television channels properly, choosing the educational programmes and

channels to watch, TV in reality can make us smarter. In addition, with the prevalence of

discussion of television programmes on various online forums, like Hkdiscuss and Lihkg, we can

understand more about the benefits and drawbacks of a programme and make an appropriate

choice. It is also worth noting that some detective story series such as Sherlock Holmes and

Kindaichi Case Files are beneficial , stimulating our creative and logical thinking .

4. 總結句

Under this link of thinking, watching TV can make us smarter as long as we exercise self-restraint

and choose the appropriate programmes.

Paragraph 5 1. 歸納所有論據

In conclusion, TV programmes can broaden our horizons by allowing us to get a glimpse of the
總結
outside world, hone our critical thinking skills by analyzing social issues and enhance our English

proficiency.

2. 重申立場

It is our firm belief that watching TV makes us smarter, and today’s motion must stand. Thank

you.

HKDSE 2017 Q8 (Article)

Learning English through Sports Communication

Unlike swimmers or basketball players, dancers are not traditionally thought of as athletes. As a member of your

school’s dance team you have been asked to write an article for your school magazine. Use the title and headings

below to support the idea of dancers as athletes.

Dancers Are Athletes

 Physical Strength and Skills

 Self-discipline & Training

標題 Dancers Are Athletes

Paragraph 1 1. 交代背景

What comes up in your mind when you are asked to give examples of athletes? Swimmers,
介紹

basketball players, 100 m sprint runners … You name it. Sadly, the general public seldom regard

dancers as a kind of athletes due to the existence of some stereotypes.

2. 明確表達立場

In fact, dancers are real athletes, and like others, they need to be skillful and disciplined enough in

order to excel in the world of dancing.

71
Paragraph 2 Physical Strengths and Skills

1. 標題句
論點一
We need to bear in mind that physical strengths and skills are the prerequisites for phenomenal

success in both ordinary athletic sports and dancing.

2. 背景

Athletic sports are often seen as some kinds of sports requiring high physical strengths and are

skill-oriented, like gymnastics, in which body balance and the skills to achieve elegant movements

are of paramount of significance; and 1500m run, which requires strong muscles and an excellent

cardiovascular system.

3. 詳細解釋論點

Similarly, a dancer has to fulfill similar requirements. For instance, hip-hop dancers are

encouraged to have sharp and rapid movements that require the use of strong muscle movements

and the frequent steps in hip hop dance also demand the dancers to have a trained respiratory

system which can support strenuous movements and endure for a long period of time. This proves

dancing actually needs dancers to have a certain level of physical strength, like other athletic

sports. In terms of the skills involved, I believe dancing has far more techniques that need to be

developed by the dancers themselves than those who are traditionally regarded as athletes.

Dancing techniques, ranging from movements and steps to teamwork and choreography, should

be figured out by the dancers step by step before they become professional dancers. It is evident

that dancers are just like the athletes on the stage of the Olympics in which they have to spare no

effort in developing their own sets of skills.

72
Paragraph 3 Self-discipline & Training

1. 相反觀點
論點二
Some argue that dancers are not receiving as much training as the athletes on tracks, in the

basketball courts or even on the ice-skating rings.

2. 反駁句

It is high time for dancers to defend themselves against the skeptical naysayers who doubt

whether dancers are athletes.

3. 詳細解釋論點

We can often see that dancers shine on the stage of the town hall, presenting their brilliant

dances to the audience, and all these can be attributed to their ceaseless training behind the

scene. Like the other athletes, it is almost compulsory for every dancer to receive a series of

incessant training before they head onto the stage. You also have to remember they are

reprimanded by their instructors almost on a daily basis like the athletes on track, just to hone

everything to perfection. We often hear the stories of athletes suffering great emotional

meltdown during their training, so do the dancers! It is apparent that the endurance of dancers

will be no weaker than those who have been recognized as athletes. Besides, we can all realize

that self-discipline is indispensable for all athletes. As a dancer in the school’s dance team, I truly

understand that self-discipline is also crucial in the road of mastering dancing, and this is the

perfect evidence that dancers are also athletes. No matter it is a professional dancer like Liu Man

Ting, who aces in ballet, Yanki Din who aces in Jazz, and hip hop, or an amateur dancer like me ,

they have to arrange packed schedules for themselves for the sake of grabbing more chances for

practising and performing in flawless shows.

4. 總結句

Being as self-disciplined and motivated as other athletes, they should be recognized true athletes.
73
Paragraph 5 1. 歸納所有論據 + 重申立場

To sum up, dancers are not thought of as athletes merely due to the public misunderstanding and
總結
stereotypes. Nevertheless, I do believe dancers are true athletes, as they have worked their butts

off to transform themselves into skillful and persistent warriors like the other athletes do.

Learning English through Workplace Communication

It has recently been claimed that in the workplace many Hong Kong fresh university graduates are less hard-

working and less willing to face challenges compared to those in the past.

You strongly disagree with this opinion. Write a letter to the editor of the Hong Kong Daily disagreeing with this

opinion. Support your view with three reasons and/or examples.

上款 Dear Editor,

Paragraph 1 1. 寫作目的

I am writing in response to the letter entitled “Fresh university graduates lack the willingness to
介紹

work hard and overcome challenges” dated 7 April 2017.

2. 明確表達立場

As a young entrepreneur, I am strongly against such a claim due to the following seasons.
75
Paragraph 2 1. 標題句

In fact, fresh university graduates in Hong Kong are willing to explore new business opportunities
論點一

in society, which reveals that they are not afraid of challenges.

2. 詳細解釋論點

The 21st century is a century of technological advancement and the Internet has provided the

young generation with a flood of new business opportunities. Not afraid of possible failures, a lot

of new university graduates in our city actually set up their own business online, ranging from

online shops to online mass media. One glaring example of this new type of business is 9GAG,

which is a Facebook page posting memes and jokes, and has become viral not only in Hong Kong

but also in foreign countries. Their willingness to develop this brand-new type of business

illustrates the fact that they are willing to face challenges, not to mention the hard work they

have devoted to maintaining the operation of their own business and achieving phenomenal

success.

3. 總結句

How would it be reasonable to call the fresh university graduates in Hong Kong “lazy” and “easily

defeated by challenges” given the phenomenon mentioned above, which is becoming more

common among the young generation?

76
Paragraph 3 1. 標題句

Yet, some employers may complain that their new employees are spending their precious time on
論點二

social networking sites instead of their work during their working hours.

2. 詳細解釋論點

It must be acknowledged that some the fresh university graduates are not paying full attention to

their work, but the work culture in Hong Kong, instead of the young generation, is to be blamed. In

myriads of foreign companies, employers are trying to incorporate entertainment into work,

with Google being one of the most notable companies. My own company has already adopted

similar approaches, such as installing television sets in the office, and I have never complained

that my employees are not industrious enough. Unfortunately, in most of the companies in Hong

Kong, employees are still required to sit front of the computer and work ceaselessly, which is

boring especially for the young generation who ranks creativity and novel ideas on the top of their

priority lists. Yet, such a problem can actually be tackled by the above-mentioned approach. With

more entertainment in the work culture, I strongly believe that young employees will find more

incentives to work and become more hardworking.

3. 總結句

Therefore, it can be seen that the monotonous and dreary work culture in Hong Kong is the culprit

of the problems and dissatisfaction experienced by the senior staff, and the fresh university

graduates should not be blamed for it.

77
Paragraph 4 1. 陳述反方觀點
Some people in the workplace may also claim that fresh university graduates in Hong Kong quit
駁論
their jobs easily.
2. 承認反方觀點的合理性 + 反駁句
At first glance, this may indicate that they are easily defeated by challenges, but this actually
reveals that a more participative leadership is the ideal choice for leading the new employees.
3. 詳細解釋
Recently, there has been a piece of news about an employee of the 90s quitting his job within a
few days as his employer scolded him, which has stirred a lot of controversy in our society. Some
of the senior staff claim that the fresh university graduates are not willing to admit their own
mistakes and lack the ability to overcome obstacles in the workplace. These people, however,
overlook the fact that the young generation is seeking acceptance as equals from the other
generations. In my own company, the employees and I have a weekly gathering during lunch, in
which they can express views on their work and exchange ideas with one another. Through this
type of leadership will the employees have an impression that they are treated equally and given
valuable advice, instead of orders for their work. This can provide them with a sense of
achievement when they overcome an obstacle as they have more decision-making power and a
sense of empowerment.
4. 總結句
From my personal experience, I believe that with an appropriate leadership style, the fresh
university graduates actually have a strong willingness to face challenges.
Paragraph 5 1. 歸納全文論點
As a young entrepreneur, I deeply understand what strengths the young generation is equipped
結論
with and what they are seeking.
2. 期望作結
It is hoped that other employees in the city can try to communicate more with their fresh
employees, trusting the future pillars of our society.

You strongly disagree with this opinion. Write a letter to the editor of the Hong Kong Daily disagreeing with this

上款 Dear Editor,

Paragraph 1 1. 寫作目的

I am writing in response to the recent claim of myriads of Hong Kong fresh university graduates
介紹

being less hardworking and willing to face challenges compared with their counterparts in the

past.

2. 明確表達立場

It goes without saying that the socioeconomic situation of Hong Kong has changed drastically over

the past few decades and the university graduates nowadays suffer tremendously with the

intensifying competition in society. As far as I am concerned, the accusations against the

graduates are groundless and they actually work tirelessly and relentlessly to overcome the

thorny challenges every day.

80
Paragraph 2 1. 標題句

To commence with, there is ample evidence that the university graduates in this era are willing to
論點一
face challenges.

2. 背景

Back in the old days, university graduates were rare and they were often offered the opportunities

to work as management personnel in some top-notch enterprises locally and internationally, for

example the human resource managers of HSBC or analysts of JP Morgan. As these jobs were so

lucrative, they clung on to their jobs and dared not challenge themselves by establishing their

own businesses.

3. 詳細解釋論點

Nowadays, the number of university graduates has been skyrocketing, giving rise to keen

competition in the job market. Some of those graduates who lose this hostile battle can only earn

their living through the establishment of their own businesses. Read local newspapers and you will

discover their novel ideas, say food trucks, production of handicrafts and operation of online

selling platforms on ebay, Carousell and Taobao. For those who are less innovative, they have

accepted employment offers from mainland China, where they have to face unfairness and

discrimination.

3. 總結句

In the face of the cutthroat competition in the labour market, many university graduates are bold

enough to step out of their comfort zone, overcoming challenges in their own businesses and

pursuing new opportunities in mainland China.

81
Paragraph 3 1. 標題句

Regarding the claim that university graduates are less hardworking, I believe the critics have
論點二

underestimated the graduates’ determination and persistence in changing their own destiny.

2. 詳細解釋論點

Due to the intense competition from local counterparts and influx of overseas talents caused by

globalization, the difficulty of recruitment is plummeting. Hoping to maintain their

competitiveness, many fresh university graduates further their studies for master or even

doctoral degrees. As they have entered the workforce, they have no alternative but to complete

their studies on a part-time basis. Obviously, this mode of studying often generates unbearable

exhaustion and excruciating stress as they are bombarded by their superiors with immense

workload at the same time. Take my cousin as an example. Pursuing the Doctor of Philosophy

degree in Science, he has to work around the clock – arriving at his office before 9, hurrying to

the University of Hong Kong at around 7 and working on his assignments and projects until

midnight. This hectic lifestyle suggests that those university graduates who are eager to climb up

the social ladder are willing to work industriously.

82
Paragraph 4 1. 標題句

論點三 Furthermore, some fresh undergraduates are so hardworking that they have applied for several

part-time jobs in addition to their full-time employment.

2. 詳細解釋論點

Not only are these fresh graduates motivated to maintain their competitiveness, it is also their

wish to improve their families’ quality of living by earning some extra money. The millennials do

not have a smooth pathway of employment like their predecessors. Instead, most of them

experience hardship when looking for job openings and end up earning salary which is not self-

sustainable, let alone purchasing their own apartments and establishing their own families.

Finding it difficult to make ends meet, many fresh graduates apply for all sorts of part-time jobs,

such as being private tutors and cashiers as well as translating document. In exchange for a

brighter future, they sacrifice their work-life balance and spare time which could have been spent

on developing friendship and entertaining themselves.

3. 總結句

How can we say that the fresh university graduates nowadays are not hardworking?
Paragraph 5 1. 歸納全文論點
All in all, not only does such a claim show how ignorant some critics are, it also reveals how
結論
miserable the life of some university graduates is.
2. 期望作結
To provide them with work-life balance and change their destiny, collaborative effort from the
government and employers is definitely required.

Learning English through Debating (Debate Speech)

You are representing your school at an inter-school debating competition. The motion is: “The policy of
reporting students’ class position should be abolished”.

Write a debate speech arguing for OR against the motion.

打招呼 Good morning, adjudicators, the opponent team, ladies and gentlemen,

Paragraph 1 1. 交代論題

I am Chris Wong, the captain of the affirmative team. Today, it is my honour to be standing here to
介紹

argue for the motion – “The policy of reporting students’ class position should be abolished.”

2. 解釋背景

To all the guests and students sitting here in the hall, can you still vividly recall your feelings when

you last received your report card with a long list of numbers indicating your position? Excited?

Delighted? Deflated? Desperate? Are you satisfied with the fact that your academic results are

determined by a set of numbers?

3. 明確表達立場

While some contend that these numbers are good indicators that drive students’ improvements in

school results, my team holds the firm belief that these ranks are merely evils suffocating students

and the policy should be abolished in no time. My team have three points to make.
85
Paragraph 2 1. 標題句

Among all the demerits of the system, the most noteworthy one is the fact that class positions
論點一

create distortion on the genuine purpose of education in students’ mind.

2. 背景

Under the grade-fixated education system in Hong Kong, students attach inordinate importance

to examinations as they believe that achieving academic excellence would guarantee them a spot

in an elite university and thus a promising future.

3. 詳細解釋論點

The notoriously demanding education system has already afflicted students for long, and the

system of reporting students’ class positions has aggravated the phenomenon. Just imagine: after

seeing these numbers in the report card, what would be your reaction? Probably to have a

glimpse of the results of your classmates to make a comparison with them. If ones prevails over

others, they will become complacent and the determination to keep this “elite status” will be

ignited in their mind, making them work tooth and nail just to get an outstanding class position.

Education would become a ranking game from their perspective, overshadowing the genuine

meaning of education. If one loses this game against others, they will find themselves fallen into a

dark abyss and deem themselves as failed individuals. Hence, this system of reporting class

positions would be favourable to churning out scoring machines, but not upholding the essence of

education – to cultivate the all-round development of individuals.

4. 總結句

With this in mind, this system should not be advocated.

Paragraph 3 1. 標題句

On top of distorting the purpose of education, equally important is the fact that the system of
86
論點二 reporting students’ class positions is unfair to students, especially the senior form students.

2. 背景

As you all know, the New Senior Secondary curriculum allows students to opt for diversified

electives and the combinations of electives are countless. While each subject may impose a

different mode of assessment on students, it makes no sense to compare students’ class positions

based on the average scores calculated using the marks of subjects of different realms.

3. 詳細解釋論點

I am a striking example of this. As I am keen on language analysis, I chose Chinese Literature and

English Literature as my electives. Yet, the scores obtained in exams are lower than those of

science students, even though I topped the list among the students taking my electives last year.

It turns out my class position is far from satisfactory. Does this imply that I didn’t perform well in

exams? Does this imply others who are ranked higher than me are necessarily better than me?

Obviously not.

4. 總結句

Given that students take different electives in senior forms, the class positions mean nothing and

should thus be abolished.

Paragraph 4 1. 標題句

Here comes to our final argument – the system of reporting students’ positions will exacerbate
論點三

the phenomenon of “Tiger Moms” in Hong Kong, ultimately putting huge strains on students.

2. 背景

Our city is notorious for “Tiger Moms” and helicopter parents that exert massive pressure on their
87
children, be it extra-curricular activities or academic results. As parents may not know much about

the curriculum of the subjects and the daily performance of their children, the one and only

indicator for them to evaluate their performance would be the class positions.

3. 詳細解釋論點

I am sure many of you sitting here have a similar experience. Dissatisfied and exasperated by the

plunging class positions in your report cards, your parents scold you for not working industriously.

As time goes by, they are increasingly demanding and compel you to do extra revision and an

unreasonably large number of mock exam papers. Coupled with the long hours of schooling, you

may feel so stressed that you have heated arguments with your parents. It is lamentable to see

that such trivial numbers on report cards can ironically aggravate the pressure of students and

even erode family harmony.

4. 總結句

Under this line of thinking, it is our team’s belief that the class position system should be

abolished.

Paragraph 4 1. 陳述反方觀點

Our decent opponent team would counter my stance, contending that class positions are driving
駁論

forces for students to elevate their performance in exams. Such a belief is based on the

assumption that scores do not mean anything as they cannot reflect our performance relative to

other students and ranks are the best barometers for them to reflect on their shortcomings and

initiate studying plans to improve their performance next time.

88
2. 反駁句

Yet, such a claim is in fact ill-founded.

3. 詳細解釋

While it is acknowledged that scores do not reflect anything, I bet the opposition team has

overlooked the importance of grades. Grading students into different distinct groups is already

sufficient for them to realize the domains where they haven’t achieved well, while simultaneously

will not impose tremendous burden on students and lead to vicious rivalries within classes as their

actual rank is not revealed.

4. 總結句

With this in mind, the opponent’s argument cannot stand.

89
Paragraph 5 1. 歸納所有論據

To conclude, it is the system of revealing students’ ranks that distort the true meaning of
總結
education; it is the system of exposing students’ class positions which creates unfairness for

students; it is the system of showing class ranks on report cards that triggers the formation of

Tiger Moms.

2. 期望

To the audience, do you want to see teenagers, who are the future pillars of society, to grow in

such a pressurized environment? To all the adjudicators, would you want your children to be

eroded by the vicious rivalries in schools? To all the students sitting here, do you want your

success to be judged by numbers on report cards any more? It is patently obvious that

abolishing the students’ class positions is the prerequisite for enhancing our problematic

education system. Therefore, today’s motion must stand. Thank you!

標題 Social Media – the cradle for public debates

Paragraph 1 1. 解釋背景

Even if we are not the keen followers of social trends, it is unlikely we will miss out the rising trend
介紹

of online public debate. Scrolling through the pages of Youtube and Facebook, we are bound to

discover that there is no dearth of public debate on a variety of topics. The advancement in social

media has irrefutably incentivized discussion about social affairs. Some may understandably

scratch their heads: aren’t these kinds of debate too irrational? Aren’t social media platforms

stifling public debate due to excessively high degree of freedom of expression?

2. 明確表達立場

Indeed, these are no more than misunderstanding of social media platforms. Below are the

reasons why social media encourages online discussion.

Paragraph 2 1. 標題句
91
論點一 While the debates on social media platforms seem to be fierce and deleterious, there are actually

many benefits hidden from plain sight, which negate the so-called downsides. Firstly, it is worth

noting that the willingness of expressing opinion in the virtual world coincides with the

blossoming of social media.

2. 概述面對面溝通的限制

Chatting face-to-face, many people are reluctant to speak out for fear that they may be criticized,

offend others and ultimately damage interpersonal relationships.

3. 詳細解釋 Social Media 的好處

In contrast, with only a few tabs on the screen, netizens can already express their view on various

social issues. Undoubtedly, social media has played a significant role in fuelling the trend of public

debate. Owing to the anonymous nature of online platforms, people can voice their opinion

without constraints and fear, wholeheartedly telling others their thoughts. Without the

supervision by teachers, students can criticize the ossified education system on the Internet;

without the watchful eyes by their parents, teenagers can vent their dissatisfaction with

helicopter parenting; without being lambasted by colleagues of contrasting political view,

everyone can fearlessly express their exasperation with the incompetence of the government.

4. 總結句

Motivating people to voice their opinion, social media has become the fertile ground of public

debate.

Paragraph 3 1. 標題句

Apart from emboldening netizens to express their view, the fact that they can utilize a wide

variety of communication tools has also encouraged people to participate in public debate.

2. 背景
92
Gone are the days when we could only initiate a debate solely through words, which were

repetitive and tedious. Thanks to technological advancement, we can type words, take snapshots

and even record videos to express our view of various issues.

3. 詳細解釋論點

Apparently, the availability of photos and videos has added spice and spark to the virtual world,

motivating more young people to engage in online discussion. More importantly, through posting

photos and videos can netizens provide more compelling evidence and lay a solid foundation for

online debate. For example, when an online user vents his or her frustration with a passenger’s

reluctance to vacate a seat for a pregnant woman on an MTR train or a deluxe restaurant’s

deplorably atrocious customer services merely through words, most people would deem this a

make-up story and malicious condemnation. However, if snapshots and videos are provided, most

netizens will be convinced and opt to support that online user’s arguments.

4. 總結句

As we can see, not only can the kaleidoscope of communicative tools available on social media

appeal to netizens, but also strengthen the persuasive power of online debate.

Paragraph 4 1. 陳述反方觀點

Blinded by their bias against social media platforms, some conservatives hold the belief that
駁論

social media stifles public debate by making discussion excessively ferocious and irrational.

2. 反駁句

Nevertheless, we should recognize the fact that the capacity of the virtual world enables millions

of netizens to comment on the same issue, thereby raising the objectiveness of public debate.

3. 詳細解釋
93
Differing from a face-to-face debate which only allows a limited number of participants, social

media discussion can be engaged in by netizens from all walks of life and all over the globe.

Having a discussion commenced, like Brexit, the Sino-US trade war and the fight for democracy in

Hong Kong, online users of different careers, ages and nationalities could have a say. With people

thinking from different perspectives by reading and responding to different comments, there is no

doubt the debate will be more comprehensive and its quality will be enhanced. While some

staunch opponents distance themselves from social media, demonizing it as a destroyer of logical

debate, we should bear in mind that once there are unreasonably radical comments on the social

media platforms, they will be instantly challenged by other sensible netizens, some of whom are

erudite professionals like lawyers, scholars and political analysts.

4. 總結句

With this in mind, it can be clearly seen that the participation in social media discussion from

netizens all over the globe can encourage public debate through enhancing its quality and making

it more objective.

Paragraph 5 1. 歸納所有論據

In essence, social media platforms are the perfect cradle encouraging public debate. Their unique
總結
features – allowing users to be anonymous, having a wide variety of communicative tools and

encouraging a surging number of global participants have all been advantageous to the discussion

of social affairs.

2. 期望

It is earnestly hoped that everyone will recognize the benefits of social media in galvanizing public

discussion, which will ultimately enhance governance and the well-being of mankind.
