FORCE PUMP - It is a pump used to deliver water at a point higher than the position of the

pump itself. When the plunger (a piston) descends, valve “a” is closed and water in the cylinder
is forced out through valve “b” and up to the storage. When the plunger is raised, valve “b” is
closed and “a” open to admit water to the cylinder. (A pump that uses pressure to move liquid).

LIFT PUMP- A pump consist of a piston travelling up and down within a cylinder which is
connected with a pipe extending down into the source. The piston and the bottom of the cylinder
are each provided with a valve opening upward. Upon the piston’s upstroke, valve A closes and
valve B opens. Upon the piston down stroke valve A opens and.

SUMP PUMP- This pumps are used in applications where excess water must be pumped away
from a particular area. A pump used to remove water that has accumulated in a water collecting
sump pit.

RECIPROCATING PUMP- Pump having a plunger that move back and forth within a cylinder
equipped with check valves. The cylinder is best located near or below the ground level.
- A type of water pump with its pump motor installed on the surface
attached to a lift and push rod to activate a submerged piston.

PISTON PUMP- is a positive displacement reciprocating pump in which a plunger is driven

backwards and forwards, or up and down by a mechanical working head.
- Water is sucked into a sealed vacuum by use of a piston.

PUMP- Is a device used to move fluids, such as liquids or slurries. A mechanical equipment
displaces a volume by physical or mechanical action.
- Is water equipment used whenever the water supply at its natural pressure cannot be
directly piped to a building, tank or reservoir.

CENTRIFUGAL PUMP- It contains an impeller mounted on a rotating shaft. The rotating

impeller increases the water velocity while forcing the water into a casing thus converting the
water’s velocity into higher pressure.
- delivers water under pressure

●Submersible pump- This is a kind of pump attached to the end of deep well pipe
enclosed in a casing where the pump is capable of functioning while submerged.
- It is basically centrifugal pump complete with electric motors which
are position under water in a suitable bored hole that delivers the
water to the surface.

●Jet (ejector) pump- Are centrifugal pumps typically used for drawing water up from a
well.

ROTARY PUMP- A positive displacement pump

TURBINE PUMP- has a vertical turbine located below ground water levels and a driving
motor located at ground
SUCTION TANK- It is a tank constructed of riveted or welded plate, the larger tanks often
being divided into two compartments. They should be large enough to contain at least one day’s
supply for the entire building in case the city main is temporarily shut off. The pipe from the
pump to the tank should be across connected to the city main so that the water maybe pumped
directly from the main in case of fire. These tanks are used so that the pneumatic tank or other
pumps suck the water from this tank and not from the public main, so that it will not deprive the
neighbors of water due to pressure.
