This plan is a fluid document (reviewed daily to insure that it is up to date) that reflects input
from our stakeholders and information from Health Officials from state and local authorities.
This plan could change depending on what transpires in our community with Covid-19. We will
continue reviewing all of the guidance on reopening schools that has come from the Governor,
the Florida Department of Education and the Department of Health. We are currently planning
on our schools starting on August 10, 2020 with health and safety precautions in place. We
know that many families will be eager for their children to return to school as normally as
possible while others will be more hesitant and may prefer our Columbia Homeroom option
discussed below. This is a new environment and there is no right or wrong, only what works
best for your child.
There will be two options for parents to choose and one that may be decided at state or district
level. Each school will begin contacting parents the week of July 13 to determine parents’
choice as of that day (this will not obligate parents to their choice, it is simply a survey to assist
with staffing). The three options are:
Columbia Homeroom Virtual (parent choice temporary full-time online): Students receive
virtual instruction daily from a CCS teacher with the option to return to that class or classes
in a traditional brick and mortar setting on an agreed upon date. This option provides
families flexibility to continue virtual instruction at home with the ability to rejoin the
student’s class when comfortable doing so. Training will be available in Google Classroom.
Distance Learning (Determined by the state or CCS) – All students work from home 100%
of the time. Distance Learning Work packets will be provided to students who need them,
though the goal is to increase the focus on virtual/digital learning through Google
Classroom. Training will be available in Google Classroom.
PREPARATION
District Preparation – The district/schools are currently completing their summer cleaning that
includes a deep cleaning of all surfaces. Schools are sanitizing (everyday cleaning) and
disinfecting (cleaning that destroys active fungus and bacteria) now to create a safe
environment when school starts. Signage will be posted to communicate how to stop the
spread of COVID-19. We are training faculty & staff on social distancing, cleaning and
identifying sick students/staff. Hand sanitizer stations will be located throughout each school
and classroom.
There will be a healthy child workshop for parents here at the school board auditorium on
July 21 for parents to attend with healthcare officials speaking on how to keep your child
healthy and how to assess your child’s health. It will be streamed live for those parents
unable to attend
Beginning August 10, 2020, all schools will be on a “closed campus” schedule. No
parents, volunteers or visitors will be allowed on campus unless they have an
appointment. This includes not walking students to their classrooms during the first
week(s) of school.
Secondary students will walk socially distanced (as much as possible) between classes
without stopping. Students will not dress out for PE. All equipment used during school
will not be shared when possible and will be cleaned/disinfected between each use if
shared. Lunches will utilize social distancing measures and multiple areas will be used to
accommodate and keep students safely distant.
Elementary students will stay in their core class as much as possible. Special area classes
will be flexible and utilize sanitizing and disinfecting throughout the day. Playgrounds
will be sanitized/disinfected as much as possible. Students will have a supervised time to
go outside on playground when possible. Students will use hand sanitizer throughout
the day as they come and go from classroom. They will be encouraged to wash hands
thoroughly throughout the day.
All classrooms will have desks spaced out and furniture will be removed or rearranged
to create as much space between students as possible.
Water fountains will be off and covered. No touch water fill up stations may be available
to replenish water bottles. Students may bring water bottles from home. No other liquid
will be allowed.
All mass meetings (back to school, PTO, SAC etc.) will be postponed or done virtually
during the first nine weeks.
No extra-curricular activities except approved FHSAA events during the first nine weeks.
No out of county trips except FHSAA sanctioned events during the first nine weeks.
Students and staff are encouraged to check for symptoms that could be COVID - 19
related. If symptoms are evident, please contact your school or supervisor.
Encourage basic hygiene with regard to clothing and body washing.
We are committed to keeping you up to date as plans are further developed so that you can
make an informed decision for your child. For now, I hope that you and your family have a safe
and enjoyable rest of the summer, and I look forward to welcoming each student back safely in
August!
