Station 1

1. What is active sensor and what is passive sensor? When do you use each?
2. What are geostationary satellites? Why are they used?
3. What is the relationship between absorption spectrum and continuum spectrum?
4. What is spectral signature and what is its significance in remote sensing?
5. What is AQUA? It carries an instrument called MODIS. What does MODIS stand for?

Station 2
1. There so many different kinds of infrared: thermal infrared, reflected infrared, far infrared, near infrared. What
are their differences? (hint: some of them are the same)
2. What is the function of each of the said infrared radiation in terms of remote sensing?
3. Name 2 differences between radars and satellites.
4. What is atmospheric window? What is its significance in remote sensing?
5. What is the difference between refraction and scattering?

Station 3

A. B. C.
1. Match the pictures with the following: Normal condition, El Nino, La Nina.
2. Name 2 negative effects that El Nino and La Nina can bring?
3. What do colors in the diagrams represent? If they are remote sensing images, what do you think the
electromagnetic wave used is?
4. El Nino and La Nina come around Christmas. So what was the condition of the last Christmas?
5. If you want to find out the change of cloud coverage over the Pacific Ocean when El Nino takes place, which
satellite's images would you use?

Station 4
This image shows Alta Floresta, Brazil on August
29, 2006.
1. What is deforestation? What are the major
causes?
2. What is the “green” part? What is the “brown”
part?
3. How does this image demonstrate the effect of
deforestation?
4. Is this done by a passive sensor or a active
sensor? Why?
5. What kind of forest do you expect to find in
Brazil?
Station 5

1. What is this trying to show? Name one reason why this diagram
may not necessarily be a good indicator of global warming?
2. Name 4 effects of global warming on glaciers.
3. What satellites are used to observe the change in size of glaciers?
4. If the Greenland melts, sea level will rise by 7 feet. How many feet
will sea level rise if Antarctica melts?
5. How would the change in polar bear population affect the penguin
population? (hint: Polar bears don't eat penguins.)

Station 6

1. Why does carbon dioxide emission keep going up and down? That is, why is there a May maximum and a
November minimum?
2. How do today's scientists track carbon dioxide concentration of long time ago?
3. What are Dobson units? (Extra credit: what is the nationality of the scientist whom Dobson units were named
after?)
4. What are effects of ozone depletion? What does it influence, if at all, global warming?
5. What would be a good electromagnetic wave to use to measure ozone depletion?

Station 7
Extra credits: Have fun with these!!!
1. Prove that “sex is fun” with calculus. Or you can tell me a math joke.
2. Draw a satellite and show its components.
3. Chinese is hieroglyphic. Let us guess what 囧 means.
4. Tell me a movie with a twisted ending and how it surprises you.
5. Who is the chef in “Hell's Kitchen”?
