Course Objectives
To acquaint students with comprehensive on numerical data and tools of analysis
The Applied General Statistics will enable students to be aware of some of the
statistical tools for data analysis

Students will have understanding in the general concept of applied statistics

Course Contents
Topic one: Introduction to statistics
What is statistics
Why statistics
Data, measurements and variables; population and samples
Topic Two: Descriptive statistics
Data collection, organization and presentation
Measures of central tendency
6 Measures of dispersion
Topic Three: Probability theory
Classical theory of probability
Random variables and probability distribution
Normal distribution
Sampling distribution
Topic Four: Understand the linear relationship between two variables
State the simple linear regression model
Fit a straight line by the least squares methods to a set of bivariate data
Construct confidence intervals for the regression coefficients.
Carry out test of hypothesis about the regression coefficients
Explain and use the F-test in regression analysis for the two variable cases
Check for deviation from assumptions on the regression model.
Topic Five: Understand the correlation between two variables
Define the correlation between two Variables
Calculate and interpret the product moment, coefficient of correlation
Construct confidence intervals for correlation coefficients
Carry out test of hypothesis about the product moment coefficient of correlation.
Topic Six: Understand multiple regression between two independent variables
State the multiple linear regression Model
Compute linear regression coefficients
Construct confidence intervals for regression coefficients
Carry out test of hypothesis for the regression coefficients
Apply analysis of variance (ANOVA) in multiple linear regression analysis
Select the best regression equation stepwise
Topic Seven: Understand the analysis of contingency tables
Define attributes, factors and factor levels, explain the dichotomous
Classification of attributes,
Explain the manifold classification of attributes,
Define contingency tables; Apply the χ2 test of independence of dichotomous
classification, Describe Yates contingency correction for a 2*2 contingency table.
Assess the validity of Yates, continuity correction
Describe Fisher's exact test, Derive the formulae for Fisher's exact test,
Assess the validity for Fishers 6.10
Assess the validity for Fishers exact test.

Assessment:
The coursework mark consist of a number of assessments of both class- based (Test 1, 10%:
Test 2, 15% and Test 3, 15%) and home-based (Assignments, 10%) tasks, will comprise 50%
of the final mark, with an Examination written at the end of the course, comprising the other
50% (i.e. Final Mark is an aggregate of the coursework mark and the final examination)
