INTRODUCTION

Prepositions are words that show a connection between other words, most
prepositions are little words like at, in, and on, Prepositions usually stand in font
of nouns (sometimes also in front of gennd verbs), Some prepositions tell you
about position or place while the other also tell you about time and direction.

CONTENT

A preposition is a word that connects one thing with another, showing they are
related. There are some prepositions namely preposition of place, time, direction
and prepositions with special uses.

A. Prepositions of Place

Some prepositions show where something happens. They are called


prepositions of place. The following sentences show the use of prepositions of
place.

1. Sally was sitting under a tree.

2. There's a wooden floor underneath the carpet.

3. She is studying in her room seriously.

4. Some geese flew over their house.


5. John and Sarah were hiding inside the wardrobe.

6. There was a tree beside the river.

7. I have a friend who lives in Malang.

8. A big truck parked in front of their car.

9. The cat jumped on top of the cupboard.

10. One girl sits in the middle of the playground and the others dance
round her.

The use of in/at/on (position)

B. Prepostions of Time

Some prepositions of time show when something happens. They are called

prepositions of time.

1. School starts at nine o'clock.

2. I brush my teeth in the morning.

3. We're going to the zoo on sturday.

4. No, you can't watch the video. It's past your bedtime already.

5. I visited my grandparents during the summer.

6. You must finish the work by Friday.

7. Pll do my homework before dinner.

8. Mom, can you help me with my homework?' Not now. You'll have to
wait until this afternoon'.

Use at /on/in (time) as in:

We also use on with dates and days:

6. A girl went past them on a bike.

7. This road leads away from the stadium.

8. They watched the train pull out of the station.

D. Prepostions with Special Uses.

Many prepositions are used in other ways. Here some of them.

Except and Instead of

Like, as and than.

The words like, as, and than are used to compare things.

E. Prepositions with Adjective, Verbs or Nouns

Prepositions are used with some adjectives.

6. The teachers are always kind to us.

Prepositions are used with some verbs.

Prepositions are used with some nouns:

CONCLUSION

As stated by Seaton and Mew (2007:132) a preposition is a word that


connects one thing with another, showing how they are related. The wTong use of
them make the sentences incorrect or changes the meaning altogether.
