Redox
Understand that:
• batteries are a source of convenient, portable energy
• a cell consists of 2 electrodes in an electrolyte
• in a cell, the further the electrodes are apart in the reactivity series, the greater the
voltage (and energy)
• redox reactions occur at the electrodes in a cell
Understand redox reactions in terms of electron transfer:
• oxidation is loss of electrons
• reduction is gain of electrons
• oxidation is increase in oxidation number and reduction is decrease in oxidation number.
oxidatation state limited to it use to name irons eg: Iron (II) etc.
• when potassium manganate (VII) oxidises a substance, it changes in colour from purple to
colourless
• when (acidified) potassium iodide reduces a substance, it changes in colour from
colourless to brown
•Define oxidising agent as a substance which oxidises another during a redox reaction.
•Define reducing agent as a substance which reduces another substance which reduces
another substance during a redox reaction.
•Be able to identify oxidising and reducing agents from simple equations.
1. Look at the specification points above – use the textbook pages (121-122, 92-99) or the revision guide
pages (78-82, 60-62) to make a few notes/spider diagram/revision cards
2. Have a go at the questions in the revision guide on pages 64 and 83 and mark yourself – answers in the
back
3. Watch the Fuse School short 3-4 minute explanation videos
