Idea Template
The Coffee Innovation Fund

Seeks to increase profitability of small-holder farmers and foster fairer,


more equitable value distribution in the supply chain.

Promotes the design and implementation of innovative practices, systems and tools
in the coffee sector.

Funds projects in four countries: Indonesia, Vietnam, Myanmar and Ethiopia.

Is a cooperation between one or more private businesses and GIZ.

Provides commercial benefits for private partners, while bringing developmental benefits
for the coffee sector in the country.

Designed by both partners but implemented by the private partner with support
from third-party service providers.

Can contribute up to €50,000 worth of investment per proposal to cover cost of materials,
technology and technical assistance – it is not a cash disbursement-based fund.

Requires matching contributions from applicants – contributions can be


monetary or in-kind.

General Applicant Criteria

Please outline below:

The idea you are seeking support for and what support you need for
implementation (page 11).

Your business commitment towards sustainability, explaining how


your idea meets the selection criteria (page 13).

The results are evaluated in-line with GIZ pre-requisites and proposal selection criteria.

Pre-requisite Criteria

• Member-based producer organization with at least 10 members


• Private company with at least one staff member in the field of
processing, exporting or wholesale/retail of coffee
• Private company with at least one staff member working in service
TECHNICAL provision & other fields
• Demonstrated capacity to execute and lead projects
• Willingness to make a fund matching contribution equivalent
to proposal budget – either in monetary or in-kind form
• Funding is only available for projects in one of the four countries

• Demonstrated commitment to sustainable and inclusive


business practices
• Willingness to work for mutual benefits in the coffee value
SOCIAL chain, especially with regards to small-holder farmers and
RESPONSIBILITY producer organizations
• Willingness to share experiences and learning with other
stakeholders through peer networks

Proposal Selection Criteria

The objective is to select proposals with high potential for impact on profitability of producers,
fairer value distribution and market access.
