Praxis Core Exam Analysis

Praxis Core Exams are tests by state departments of education and by colleges and

universities to measure the academic achievement and proficiency of individuals entering or

completing teacher preparation programs. These tests measure academic skills in reading,

writing and mathematics. They were designed to provide comprehensive assessments that

measure the skills and content knowledge of candidates entering teacher preparation programs.

In Nevada, one must score at least 156 points in the Reading portion of the test, 162 point in the

Writing portion, and 150 in the Mathematics portion of the test.

To prepare for taking the practice Praxis Exam, I didn’t do all that much other than

follow and read through all the links given in the assignment. I reviewed several of the practice

questions, but probably should have spent more time doing this after getting back my results. If I

could go back and start from the beginning I probably would have taken more time studying the

practice questions for the Reading portion, only because I’m pretty confident in my Math and

Writing abilities.

In the end, my results were not all that shocking. I already knew what my strengths and

weaknesses are, so when scoring a 93% on the Math portion, which means I’m very likely to

pass, the only thing that surprised me was that I had missed four of the questions when I thought

I only would have missed one. As for the writing portion, I scored an 83%, which means that

I’m likely to pass. These results aren’t an true representation of what I would get on the actual

test in my opinion, only because the written essay portion of the test wasn’t graded as accurately
as I would imagine the actual test will be since the results were given immediately. Lastly, the

reading portion of the test is where I need the most improvement. I knew that my

comprehension skills were my greatest weakness and my score of 64% wasn’t much of a

surprise. This score basically says that I need improvement in this area and I can agree with their

assessment.

To further improve my scores on the actual Praxis exam I will probably do a few things

differently. For the Math section, since I was so confident that I got all but one of them right, I

think by simply checking over my answers first before submitting them will help increase my

score or at least keep it at a constant. I do however plan to take more practice reading tests and

maybe even a couple more writing practice tests first before taking the actual ones just to get a

better sense of the types of questions that will be asked. Also, I may decide to rent or buy a

study guide/book in order to improve myself concerning these skills.
