strike should kill or cripple the capital
ships, the missile ships and the
auxiliaries. Without these, the
formation's ability to defend itself is
significantly degraded.
The weapons listed in the Missile
Types and Characteristics Table are
all large, long-range, Soviet, air-to-
surface missiles. The others not listed
(e.g., AS-7, AS-14) are "tactical,"
that is, short-range and with relatively
small warheads.
All of the missiles in the table are
launch and leave, and have 1000-
kilogram HE (200 damage points) or
nuclear warheads with a yield of 350
kilotons. All can be fitted with an
ARM guidance package prior to
aircraft takeoff. As per standard
Harpoon rules, any ARM seeker
must have its target emitter desig-
nated prior to aircraft takeoff. All are
launched from High altitude and are
Small targets (i.e., fighter-sized).
When fitted with standard IfM/
T ARH guidance, these missiles can
use over-the-horizon (OTH) targeting
from a Bear D or a Hormone B for
midcourse guidance. The aircraft
must have line of sight to the target
and the launching aircraft when the
missile is launched, and it must have
detected the target on its Big Bulge
radar, which must radiate continu-
ously. After launch, the aircraft must
maintain line of sight on the target
and the missile. A single aircraft can
support any number of missiles at
once.

Any of these missiles may use the
bearing-only launch (BOL) mode,
with a -15% penalty to the chance of
a hit. In contrast, NATO missiles
suffer a 5% penalty in BOL mode.
This process is described in section
6.6.5 of the rules. If the missile was
originally launched in the OTH mode,
and the link between the Bear D and
the target, or the Bear D and the
missile, is broken, then it reverts to
the BOL mode.
When launched, the missile may
follow one of two flight profiles.
First, it can climb to High or Very
High altitude and cruise at high speed
until it is over the target. It then noses
over and dives at the ship at very high
speed. Second, it can descend to Low
altitude and fly there until it reaches
the target. The missile moves faster
and has a longer range using the high
profile, but if it uses the low profile,
then it will not be detected as soon
due to the radar horizon.
In the turn that a missile using the
high profile reaches its target, it is in a
steep, high-speed dive and must be
treated as a crossing target. For an il-
lustration of missile launch altitude
and flight profiles, refer to the Soviet
AS M Flight Profiles Diagram on page
1. Each missile may be launched in
either a high or low profile. The range
differs, depending on the profile used.

Table below provides the ranges for
each missile in each profile. Once
launched, the profile cannot be
changed.

The best way to model stealth (on a
simple level) is to treat any stealthy
aircraft as a .1 m2 target, with the re-
duced detection range and Pd inherent
therein. It also implies the reduced hit
chance for a VSmall air target (-10%).
Since they also have a reduced IR
signature, FLIRS and IRS Ts see them at
one-quarter range, and IR homing mis-
siles have a -10% chance of hitting
them.
I have little data on the F-117 A except
that it is subsonic, extremely unmaneu-
verable(ATAof I (.5)), has some sort of
laser designator,andhas an internal bay
for weapons up to 2000-pound LGBs.
There is no indication either way of it
having a cannon or any offensive air-to-
air capability.
I do not intend to add the B-2 to the
game. Like the B-IB, its mission is
strategic, and if the B-2 starts showing
up, it's all over.

Editorial Rules Update The second battle set is in prepara-

So much is happening with Har-
poon and related projects that I have
decided (with some urging) to publish
a newsletter. It has three goals:
First, the newsletter will keep
players and others informed on the
various products in development by
GDW and others for the Harpoon
gaming system. This includes supple-
ments, miniatures releases, computer
games, and possibly other products.
Second, the newsletter provides
readers with new rules or expansions
of existing rules; new data on
weapons, sensors and platforms; and
scenarios readers can play.
Third, the newsletter serves as a
way for the players to exchange infor-
mation and make their own contribu-
tions to the game system.
I have always depended on the
players who write to me to keep me
honest and to send me some useful
insights about modem naval warfare.
I get several letters a week and
answer them all. I try to keep up with
a bulletin board on GEnie (Scorpia's
Bulletin Board, Category 4, Topic
17). I also hold seminars at conven-
tions to put the word out and see what
people are interested in.
I hope you find the information in
this newsletter useful and interesting.
I want to hear from players. I need
scenarios, rules questions, articles on
tactics, and anything else you think
needs to be shared. The only way this
publication will grow beyond a
quarterly eight-pager is if I get
enough material.
We will work to keep costs down
and quality up. This publication is
designed not to be a moneymaker, but
to get information out to people about
a rapidly changing topic and the game
that describes it.
In each newsletter, I will include
new rules designed to make the game
more accurate or to reflect new data.
These are considered official changes
and will be added in the next edition
or printing.

This change allows fully automated
weapons to engage more than one

Product Updates
Computer Harpoon
It's done. It's finished. It's on the
street.
After 30 months of hard work,
vicious technical problems, and slim
financing, the computer product is
shipped. It doesn't do everything we
wanted it to, but the standard IBM
compatible just doesn't have the
needed horsepower. As the standard
machine gets faster and has more
RAM, the game will improve and
grow as well.

formats to make it clearer. It is
scheduled for release in the spring of
1990.

Book reviews are some of the best
information sources for someone
interested in modem warfare and
gaming. Each issue of this newsletter
will give a short list, but the list is not
exclusive. A tremendous number of
books come out each year, so assume
that if you see it here, it is one of the
best in its class.
J1111e's Defence Weekly
Jane's Defence Weekly, published
weekly by Jane's Information Group,
London. Subscriptions are $100 per

Although $100 is a lot of money,
less than $2.00 a week is well worth
the kind of information in each issue.
This includes weapons statistics and

trouble spots, and national defense
issues from all over the world. It is
one of my primary information
sources and is very timely.
Fighter Combat, Tactics,
and Maneuuering
Fighter Combat, Tactics and

This book broke new ground in
explaining exactly how modem day
air combat is performed. Specific
maneuvers are described and detailed
in a how-to format. This book is
written by a fighter pilot for other
fighter pilots as a basic introduction to
air combat maneuvering. It is liberally
salted with timeless mottos from
famous and anonymous aviators, and
profusely illustrated with diagrams
detailing how the maneuvers are
performed. If you have GDW's Air
Superiority, this book is a must. If
you have any of the jet combat
simulation programs, this book is a
must. If you care about modem jet
combat, this book is a must.

Buying Miniatures
Many people have written to me
asking where to find miniature
modem ships. Five companies
manufacture modem naval mini-
atures. Skytrex and Denian produce
many different types in l/3000th
scale. The quality is less then stellar,
but the miniatures are recognizable
and inexpensive. C-in-C, GHQ, and
Superior all produce theirs in 1/2400
scale, and they are of better quality
(and higher price).
Superior: The detail on the Supe-
rior models is adequate, but not as
good as GHQ. The Superior line is
more extensive than GHQ, and covers
US, Soviet, Canadian, UK, Italian,
and French units. Superior also sell
some good l/2400th-scale aircraft
(not enough types, though).
GHQ: The GHQ l/2400th line is
limited right now to US and Soviet
miniatures, but GHQ intends to
rapidly expand its line, including
ships of other countries. The quality is
excellent. GHQ accepts phone orders
and credit cards.
C-in-C: C-in-C produces very
good l/2400th castings, but its mod-
em naval miniatures are limited to
about 10 ships per country, and these
are only US and Soviet.
C-in-C accepts phone orders and
credit cards. It gives discounts on all
orders over $30 list price.
Skytrex: Skytrex l/3000th are
inexpensive, and the selection is very
complete. You want an 01 class oiler?
Skytrex has them. The early castings
are poor, but lately the quality has
improved. The new Kirov is very
nice.
The most expensive castings are
the US carriers at $5.00 a throw; the
others run from $2.50 to $1.25.
Denian: The newest line is Denian
models. These are l/3000th scale and
of poor to fair quality, but they cover
a lot of rare classes. These include
Japan, Sweden, Norway, the Nether-
lands, and even some off-the-wall
ships from the US and Russia. They
are available from SIMTAC. I don't
have any ordering information.
Distribution: Alnavco distributes
the Superior and GHQ lines. It will
take phone orders and accepts credit
cards with a $20 minimum.
Modeler's Mart is located in
Florida and handles GHQ, Superior,
and also the 1/3000 line of Skytrex
castings from Britain. It takes credit
cards by phone and has a$ 10.00
minimum.
Members of the military can order
from Battlefields, a mail-order house
that ships worldwide. It carries GHQ
and Skytrex, and provides a 20%
discount to members of the military
only. Write and ask for a catalog.

Gary Sapp of West Valley, Utah,
reports that Modeler's Mart carries a
line of 1: 1200- or 1:1250-scale air-
craft, which fit well on top of a 1/2-
inch counter. The only problem is the

The fourth unit of the Kiev class is significantly different from its three sisters. The electronics suite includes a large
planar phased array, a huge cylindrical radome (nobody knows what's inside it), and a radically modified weapons suite.

The illustration on page 6 was
taken from Jane's Defence Weekly of
13 Aug. 1988. It was described as
having come from an Indian publica-
tion and the article featuring it
reported on Indian pilots being
allowed to fly the MiG-35, a new
fighter under development.
The illustration shows an aircraft
that looks like the F-16. The Soviets

may have found the Fulcrum and
Flanker too expensive for their liking,
and may have decided to hedge their
bets with a simple, single-engine,
single-seat day fighter.
Proposals have been made to the
Indian government for a radically
reengined MiG design, and this may
represent one provisional aircraft.
Assume that the aircraft is the
spiritual descendent of the MiG-21. It
would be very maneuverable, cheap,
but with limited range. Possible ar-
mament could be a 30mm cannon and
four AAMs, including the AA-10 and
AA-11.
No other defense publication has
