PLATE NO. 6 Structural Theory 1/ Structural Design 1
DUE DATE: On or Before May 31, 2020

1. From the frame shown subjected to the lateral loads of 20 kN and 40 kN acting at I and E respectively, compute the
axial load of CG, the moment at the base of column AE, and the moment of beam GH at joint G. Use Portal Method in
the analysis.

2. From the building frame having fixed supports at A and B and carrying a uniform load of 10 kN/m at girders CD and
EF, compute the approximate maximum positive moment at girder CD, the maximum negative moment at girder CD
and compute the maximum shear od girder CD.

3. A simply supported beam has a span of 12 m and carries a concentrated load of 60 kN as shown. Assuming is EI to be
constant and = 50,000 kNm2, and using virtual work method, Calculate the deflection at B, and C, and the slope at B.

4. Draw the Influence diagram for moment at B from the given beam shown.

5. The Parker Truss shown carries a uniform live load of 30 kN/m and a concentrated live load of 90 kN. Using the
influence line in each case, compute the live load stress of FC, FG, and GC.

6. In reinforced concrete design, derive the formula for balanced steel ratio first by involving ß1, then involving Ru.

7. A reinforced concrete beam has a width of 250 mm and an effective depth of 500 mm. Using f’c = 28 MPa, and fy =
415 MPa, determine the depth of the compression block for a balanced condition, the required steel area for such
condition and the ultimate moment capacity to ensure that concrete fails in a ductile manner.

8. The beam shown has a cross section as shown in the figure. It carries an ultimate moment of 156 kN-m. Using f’c =
20.70 MPa, fy = 414 MPa and Es = 200,000 MPa, locate the neutral axis from the top of the beam. Determine the
number of 20 mm diameter bar needed. Verify whether the steel yields or not.

9. A rectangular beam has a width of 300 mm and an effective depth to the centroid of tension reinforcement of 600
mm. The tension reinforcement has an area = 4,762 mm2, while for compression reinforcement placed62.50 mm
from the compression face = 987.50 mm2. Using f’c = 34.56 MPa, fy = 414.60 MPa, balanced steel ratio = 0.034 and
assuming steel yields first, determine the depth of the compression block. Determine the design strength using NSCP
2010 Specifications. Alsop, determine the concentrated load at the mid-span in addition to a dead load of 20 kN/m
including the weight of the beam, if it has a span of 6 m.

10. A simply supported beam is reinforced with 4 – 28 mm bars at the bottom and 2 – 28 mm bars at the top. Steel
covering to centroid of reinforcement is 70 mm at both sides. The beam has an over-all depth of 400 mm and a
width of 300 mm, f’c = 30 MPa, fy = 415 MPa, balanced steel ratio = 0.031. Determine the depth of the compression
block. Determine the design strength using the specification of NSCP 2010. Determine the concentrated live load at
the mid-span in addition to the dead load of 20 kN/m including its own weight that the beam could carry if it has a
span of 6 m.
