Art refers to the use of art in other disciplines, as in psychology
Traditionally, art was considered to be mainly paintings and drawings. In more recent times, we have seen new art forms appearing; examples include: street art, graffiti art
and digital art. These are the most general or common forms of art that you will hear about in today's society.
It is difficult to list details of every different known type of art form, because the art is so broad and different people see and experience art differently. To simplify this a little,
we can categorize art into two main types: modern art and contemporary art.
Modern art is art created from the 1860s up until 1970 period and can often be recognized with the works of famous artists such as Vincent van Gogh, Paul Cézanne and Pablo
Picasso. Contemporary art can be described as "art in our lifetime" or from the 1970s to the present day.
Seven (7) major forms of Philippine Contemporary Arts
Visual Arts
- visual arts are art forms such as painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, photography, video, filmmaking, design, crafts, and architecture. Many artistic
disciplines such as performing arts, conceptual art, textile arts also involve aspects of visual arts as well as arts of other types. Also included within the visual arts are the
applied arts such as industrial design, graphic design, fashion design, interior design and decorative art.
Literature
- most generically, is anybody or collection of written work. More restrictively, literature refers to writing considered to be an art form or any single writing deemed to have
artistic or intellectual value, and sometimes deploys language in ways that differ from ordinary usage.
Music
- vocal or instrumental sounds (or both) combined in such a way as to produce beauty of form, harmony, and expression of emotion
-the art or science of composing or performing music
-written or printed signs representing vocal or instrumental sound.
Theatre
- Theatre or theatre is a collaborative form of performing art that uses live performers, typically actors or actresses, to present the experience of a real or imagined event
before a live audience in a specific place, often a stage. The performers may communicate this experience to the audience through combinations of gesture, speech, song,
music, and dance. Elements of art, such as painted scenery and stagecraft such as lighting are used to enhance the physicality, presence and immediacy of the experience.
Dance
- is a performing art form consisting of purposefully selected sequences of human movement. This movement has aesthetic and symbolic value, and is acknowledged as dance
by performers and observers within a particular culture. Dance can be categorized and described by its choreography, by its repertoire of movements, or by its historical
period or place of origin.
Architecture
- the art or practice of designing and constructing buildings
- the complex or carefully designed structure of something
Film
- also called movie, motion picture or moving picture, is a visual art-form used to simulate experiences that communicate ideas, stories, perceptions, feelings, beauty, or
atmosphere through the use of moving images. These images are generally accompanied by sound, and more rarely, other sensory stimulations
The development of Philippine Art comes in three (3) major traditions namely :
o Ethnic Tradition (Pre – Colonial )
Arts is commonly for ritual purposes and everyday use
o Spanish Colonial Tradition
Became a handmaiden of religion, serving to propagate catholic faith and support the colonial order at the same time
o American Colonial and Contemporary Tradition
Began after World War II and the granting of independence. Writers at artist posed the question of national identity as the main theme of various art form.
The Philippine Art has its unique characteristics based on its period of development. The Philippine contemporary arts is an offshoot of social realism brought about by Martial
Law. Arts became an expression of people’s aspiration for a just, free and sovereign society. Social realism is the term used for work produced by painters, printmakers,
photographers, writers and filmmakers that aims to draw attention to the real socio-political conditions of the working class as a means to critique the power structures
