 EARTH/SOIL
i. Draw a labelled diagram to show the structure of the earth.

ii. The earth’s crust is made

up two parts.
a.) Name them
 Continental crust
 Oceanic crust

b.) Both are mainly igneous rock. What is igneous rock?

 Igneous rock, or magmatic rock, is one of the three main rock types,
the others being sedimentary and metamorphic. Igneous rock is
formed through the cooling and solidification of magma or lava.
 The magma can be derived from partial melts of existing rocks in
either a planet's mantle or crust. Typically, the melting is caused by
one or more of three processes: an increase in temperature, a
decrease in pressure, or a change in composition. Solidification into
rock occurs either below the surface

iii. What is the difference between physical and chemical weathering?

Give two examples for each.
 Physical weathering is also called as mechanical weathering. This is
the process where rocks breakdown without altering their chemical
composition. Physical weathering can occur due to temperature,
pressure or snow.
 There are two main types of physical weathering. They are “freeze
thaw” and “exfoliation”.

 Chemical weathering is the decomposition of rocks due to chemical
reactions. This changes the composition of the rock. This often takes
place when rain water reacts with minerals and rocks. Rain water is
slightly acidic (due to dissolution of atmospheric carbon dioxide,
carbonic acid is produced), and when the acidity increases chemical
weathering also increases. With the global pollution, acid rains
occur now, and this increases chemical weathering more than the
natural rate.

iv. Name the four agents that can erode material and move it
somewhere else.;

 Wind  Gravity
 Water  Ice

v. Slaked lime is made from limestone, a common rock. It is not very

soluble. Give four reasons to explain why slaked lime is used on soil
that is too acidic.
 Farmers add slakes lime to acidic soil because if the soil is too acidic
then plants will not grow so they add slaked lime to neutralize the effect
of acid in the soil.
 The plant will not survive in acidic soil so they add slaked lime.
 Slaked lime increases the pH of the soil by increasing the salinity and
the thus the acidic of the soil gets reduced.
 Slaked lime acts as source of calcium and magnesium for the plants and
allows more water entry into the soil.
