Recall: To graph a Linear Equation, we find first the two coordinates in order to graph. The easiest
way is to use the x-intercept and y-intercept.
Example: Graph the linear equation y = 2x + 4
Solution: First step ----- y = 2x + 4
Let x = 0 Let y = 0
Y = 2(0) + 4 0 = 2x + 4
Y=0+4 2x = 4
Y = 4, ( 0, 4) 2
X = 2, (2, 0)
Second Step ---- graph in the Cartesian Plane
Now, we are going to graph two linear equations using the same Cartesian Plane.
Example: Graph 3x + y = 5 and 2x + y = 9
Steps: 1. Find the coordinates using x-and y-intercept.
2x + y = 4 3x + y = 9
Let x =0 Let y = 0 Let x = 0 Let y = 0

Linear inequality in two variables is a mathematical statement that makes use of inequality
symbols such as <, ≤, ≥, >, and ≠ and an inequality that can be written in 4 forms:
1. Ax + By ≤ C 3. Ax + By > C
2. Ax + By ≥ C 4. Ax + By < C
Where A, B, C are real numbers and A and B are not both equal to zero.
Inequality symbols:
< is less than - less than
> is greater than or is more than + more than or greater than
≤ is less than or equal to
≥ is greater than or equal to
Examples:
1. 4x – 5y ≥ 2 4. 8y ≥ 3x -9
2. x – y < 12 5. 10x < 3y -7
3. 3x + 4y ≤ 7 6. 15 + x ≤ 3y
Half plane – the region that is divided when a line is graphed in the coordinate plane.
Plane Divider – the plane that separates the Cartesian coordinate plane into two half plane.
2. Use the resulting equation to solve for the x-intercept and y-intercept.
a. y = x + 2 b. y = x - 4
let x = 0 let y = 0 let x = 0 let y = 0

-4)all in red
(0, 2) -(-x = 2) (0, -4) x=4
X = -2 (4, 0)
(-2, 0)
3. Plot the points on the Cartesian plane.
4. Graph with a solid line if the original inequality contains ≥, or ≤ symbol. The solid line indicates
that ALL points on the line ARE part of the solution of the inequality.
Graph the points with a dash or broken line if the original inequality contains <, or > symbol. The
dash or broken line indicates that ALL points on the line ARE NOT part of the solution set of the
inequality.

5. Get the origin as reference point (0, 0). Substitute the coordinates of this point(0, 0) into the
inequality.
a.) If the coordinates of the origin satisfy the inequality or make the inequality true, shade the
half-plane or region where the origin lies.
b.) If the coordinates of the origin will make the statement false, shade the other side of the
plane divider or the opposite of the origin.
Example: y < x + 2 , (0, 0) y < x – 4, (0, 0) y ≥ -x + 1, (0,0) y ≤ -x + 3, (0, 0)
0<0+2 0<0–4 0≥0+1 0≤0+3
0 < 2, true 0 < -4, false 0 ≥ 1, false 0 ≤ 3, true

2(5) – 4 > 5

-3(0) – 1 ≤ -12
0 – 1 ≤ -12
-1 ≤ -12, false. Therefore, (0,1) is not a solution of the inequality.

1. Draw the graph of each inequality on the same coordinate plane. Shade the appropriate half-
plane. Recall that if all points on the line are included in the solution, it is closed half plane,
and the line is solid. On the other hand, if the points on the line are not part of the solution of
the inequality, it is an open half-plane and the line is broken.
2. The region where shaded areas overlap is the graphical solution to the system. If the graphs do
not overlap, then the system has no solution.
