Solving System of Linear Equation in Two Variables

Recall: To graph a Linear Equation, we find first the two coordinates in order to graph. The easiest
way is to use the x-intercept and y-intercept.
Example: Graph the linear equation y = 2x + 4
Solution: First step ----- y = 2x + 4
Let x = 0 Let y = 0
Y = 2(0) + 4 0 = 2x + 4
Y=0+4 2x = 4
Y = 4, ( 0, 4) 2
X = 2, (2, 0)
Second Step ---- graph in the Cartesian Plane

Now, we are going to graph two linear equations using the same Cartesian Plane.
Example: Graph 3x + y = 5 and 2x + y = 9
Steps: 1. Find the coordinates using x-and y-intercept.
2x + y = 4 3x + y = 9
Let x =0 Let y = 0 Let x = 0 Let y = 0

2x =4 3x = 9

GRAPHING LINEAR INEQUALITY IN TWO VARIABLES

Learning competency: Graphs linear inequalities in two variables

Objective: Graphs linear inequality in two variables.
Date:_________________

Linear inequality in two variables is a mathematical statement that makes use of inequality
symbols such as <, ≤, ≥, >, and ≠ and an inequality that can be written in 4 forms:
1. Ax + By ≤ C 3. Ax + By > C
2. Ax + By ≥ C 4. Ax + By < C
Where A, B, C are real numbers and A and B are not both equal to zero.
Inequality symbols:
< is less than - less than
> is greater than or is more than + more than or greater than
≤ is less than or equal to
≥ is greater than or equal to
Examples:
1. 4x – 5y ≥ 2 4. 8y ≥ 3x -9
2. x – y < 12 5. 10x < 3y -7
3. 3x + 4y ≤ 7 6. 15 + x ≤ 3y

Half plane – the region that is divided when a line is graphed in the coordinate plane.
Plane Divider – the plane that separates the Cartesian coordinate plane into two half plane.

Steps in Graphing Linear Inequality:

1. Replace the inequality symbol with an equal sign.
Examples: a. y < x + 2 y=x+2
b. y < x – 4 y=x–4
c. y ≥ -x + 1 y = -x + 1
d. y ≤ -x – 3 y = -x + 3

2. Use the resulting equation to solve for the x-intercept and y-intercept.
a. y = x + 2 b. y = x - 4
let x = 0 let y = 0 let x = 0 let y = 0
y=0+2 0=x+2 y=0–4 0=x-4 Ordered pair to plot
y=2 -x = 2 y = -4 -(-x =are
-4)all in red
(0, 2) -(-x = 2) (0, -4) x=4
X = -2 (4, 0)
(-2, 0)
3. Plot the points on the Cartesian plane.

4. Graph with a solid line if the original inequality contains ≥, or ≤ symbol. The solid line indicates
that ALL points on the line ARE part of the solution of the inequality.
Graph the points with a dash or broken line if the original inequality contains <, or > symbol. The
dash or broken line indicates that ALL points on the line ARE NOT part of the solution set of the
inequality.

5. Get the origin as reference point (0, 0). Substitute the coordinates of this point(0, 0) into the
inequality.
a.) If the coordinates of the origin satisfy the inequality or make the inequality true, shade the
half-plane or region where the origin lies.
b.) If the coordinates of the origin will make the statement false, shade the other side of the
plane divider or the opposite of the origin.
Example: y < x + 2 , (0, 0) y < x – 4, (0, 0) y ≥ -x + 1, (0,0) y ≤ -x + 3, (0, 0)
0<0+2 0<0–4 0≥0+1 0≤0+3

Solution: 2x + y > 5 Use this inequality, substitute the value of x as 5 and y as -4
2(5) – 4 > 5

6 > 5
This is true statement because 6 is greater than 5, therefore, ( 5, -4) is a

GRAPHICAL SOLUTIONS OF SYSTEMS OF LINEAR INEQUALITIES IN TWO VARIABLES

Learning competency: Graph the solution of systems of linear inequalities in two variables.
Objectives: Solve and graph the solution of system of linear inequalities in two variables.

To solve a system of inequalities in two variables by graphing,

1. Draw the graph of each inequality on the same coordinate plane. Shade the appropriate half-
plane. Recall that if all points on the line are included in the solution, it is closed half plane,
and the line is solid. On the other hand, if the points on the line are not part of the solution of
the inequality, it is an open half-plane and the line is broken.
2. The region where shaded areas overlap is the graphical solution to the system. If the graphs do
not overlap, then the system has no solution.

EXAMPLES:

3 x− y >−3
1. To solve the system {
x+ 4 y ≤8
graphically, graph 3 x− y >−3 and
on the same Cartesian
x +4 y ≤ 8
coordinate plane. The region where the
shades regions overlap is the graph of the
solution to the system.

2. There are at most 10 people composed of children and adults who are riding in a bus. Each
child and adult paid Php 5 and Php 7, respectively. If the total amount collected was not more
than Php 70, how many children and adults can there be in the bus?
Solution:
Let x = number of children in the bus
y = number of adults in the bus

Represent the number of people in the bus as x + y ≤ 10.

Represent the amount collected as 5x + 7y ≤ 70.
Thus, the system associated with the example is actually composed of four linear inequalities:

x + y ≤ 10

point in this shaded region, and then substitute its coordinates in the system o check.

Consider the point whose coordinates are (20, 30). Check this against the inequalities x + y ≤ 10 and
5x + 7y ≤ 70.

(x y)
(20, 30)
x + y ≤ 56 80x + 100y ≤ 4,800
20 + 30 ≤ 56 80(20) + 100(30) ≤ 4,800
50 ≤ 56 1,600 + 3,000 ≤ 4,800

LINEAR FUNCTION APPLICATION

Learning competency: Illustrates a linear function.

Objective: translate verbal sentence to mathematical phrase
Define and determine a linear function and determine its slope and y-
intercept.
Find the values of x in table form.

Date:_______________

I. Represent the following algebraically.

______________________1. Twice a number is six.
______________________2. Four added to a number gives eleven.
______________________3. Twenty six decreased by twice a number is fifteen.
______________________4. If twice a number is added to eight, the sum is forty.
______________________5. The sum of the squares of a number x and nine yields thirty.
______________________6. The difference between thrice a number and ten is eighty.
______________________7. The sum of two consecutive integers is equal to thirty eight.
______________________8. The product of two consecutive integers is one hundred sixty.
______________________9. The area of the rectangle whose length is (x +4) and width is (x - 3) is fifty.
______________________10. The sum of the ages of Mark and Sheila equals forty seven.

A linear function is defined by f(x) = mx + b, where m is the slope and b is the y – intercept. If m ≠ 0,
then the degree of the function is 1. If m=0 and b ≠ 0, then the degree of the function is 0. If m = 0 and
b = 0, then the degree of the function is not defined.

Application
I. LINEAR FUNCTION. Determine whether the function is linear or nonlinear. Show the differences of
x- & y-coordinates.
x -4 -2 1 3 4 x -2 -1 0 1 2
f(x) -21 -11 4 14 19 f(x) 1 0 1 4 9

x -5 -4 -3 -2 -1 x 5 4 3 2 1
f(x) 15 11 7 3 -1 f(x) -1 2 5 8 11

II. Determine whether linear or nonlinear. If linear function, write the slope, y-intercept & ordered
pair.

7.f(x)=-x-5
8.f(x)=-4x2
9. f(x)=11x2-7x
10. f(x)=3x3-4x2
