represent text, option answer of closed to open end questions
end questions in a questionnaire.

3
Difference between Splitter Pro X version and Pro version

• While Splitter Pro X can read Google Forms survey data downloaded as Excel, the
main function for Pro X version is to accommodate survey data that contains “codes”.
• Codes here are numbers that represent texts. For manual data entry it is much
easier to type number that represents text rather than typing the actual text.

• Therefore the main feature of Splitter Pro X is to associate each code with text, option
answer in a question.
• No automatic coding as in Pro version.

Coding Tab – Coding* Answers to Open End Questions (1)
Main Steps

• When opening survey data, Splitter Pro X tries to find whether there are uncoded texts in each
question. In Splitter texts have to be coded first in order to create tables.
• For coding open end questions, usually what we want to do is to identify each individual data first
in respondent full answer. We do this by reviewing manually then do necessary editing. As is used
in writing to separate phrase or ideas, Splitter uses comma sign as data separator.
Two types of coding method (1) Label coding where Splitter tries to separate whole cell content into its individual
content using comma sign as separator (2) Cell coding where Splitter captures the whole cell content as individual data.

43
Survey Data Entry in Excel for Splitter Pro X (1)
General
• Survey spreadsheet for Splitter Pro X uses the following format
• Column for question
• Row for case/respondent
• Column / Row has to be continuous. No skipping on Column / Row
• First row is for list of questions
• Second row and so on answer for each question for each respondent.
•The cell content is “code” that is number representing label option in the questionnaire.
• It can also be text, usually for “other mention” or open ended question.
• It can be mixed : code and text
•Or numeric data, that is number that doesn’t represent label option in the questionnaire.

‘codes’
Questions

Case/

The label/text for each code will be entered in Setup tab.
44
Survey Data Entry in Excel for Splitter Pro X (2)
Code number for option answers in questionnaire:
• The option answer codes to be used in each question has to be in sequential and continuous number starting
from number 1 (1,2,3, 4 etc). Can not jump.
•It is common for the option of Don’t know or Not Available the assigned code is 98 or 99. For Splitter it is not
allowed. Just assign a number after the last code option number.

Cases for Multiple Answers question:

• Comma is used for multiple entry in a cell : “1,2,3,6”. Other character is not allowed such as “;”, “.”, or “/”
• No comma as preceding or ending data : “,1,2” or “1,2,”. Splitter will recognize as empty data. However this can
be edited later in the program.
• Any order is ok. “1,2” or “2,1” is the same.
• Spacing is allowed : “1, 2” or “ 1,2 ” or “ 1 , 2”
• Codes and text mixed together is allowed “ 1, Blackberry” or “Android, 3, Blackberry”

Cases for open end text:

• Just write as it is, for example “ I like the brand. User friendly, the processor also the fastest”.
• Later answers to open end questions will be reviewed and edited anyway in Coding tab.

Cases for Numeric:

• No comma is allowed for thousands for example “1005” and not “1,005”
• “0” zero, negative and fraction number is acceptable. For fraction use period “.”

Cases Skip Jump:

• Since spreadsheet is in order of question, for skip jump empty column is expected. Have to fill in the right
column/question
