Writing a Linear Function

Rule
y = 2x + 1
What is a linear function?
A linear function is
 any function that
graphs to a straight
line
 an equation either
one or two
variables with
exponents or
powers of 1
 If the function has more
variables, the variables must
be constants or known
variables for the function to
remain a linear function.
Writing a Linear Function Rule
 Function rule: an Input Output
equation that describes a X Y
function.

 Represented by y= or
f(x)=

 Think: What did you do
to the x-value to get the 3 7
y-value?

Real-World Function Rules
 The exhibit of a desktop computer is about
twenty times the size of a normal-sized desktop
computer. Write a function rule to describe this
relationship.
Real-World Practice
 At a supermarket salad bar, the price of a salad
depends on its weight. Salad costs $.19 per
ounce.
 Write the function rule.
 How much would an 8 oz. salad cost?
Functions as Equations
y = 2x + 3 AKA f(x) = 2x + 3

 Note: The x and y in the equations represent

ordered pairs (coordinates).

 If you are given an equation, but no

coordinates, you can create a graph by using a
T-chart.
Function Notation
y = 3x + 2
Can also be written as
f(x) = 3x + 2
Read
The function of x = 3x + 2
How can we write these functions?
Rewrite in function notation.
 y= 3x+1

 y= 5x

 y= 3x+7

 4x-15 = y
