Listening Exam task 4

Task One - asks about the reason why each visitor went to the museum
Task Two - asks about what impressed the speaker the most about the museum.
Here is the question in full with the answers:

Before the listening begins use your time well understanding what is being asked in the two tasks
and then identifying the keywords in the answers.

Here in relation to the first task speaker one mentions having to do some work for a course, and
that museums are great source of information which would correspond to the answer F – to do
some research (21F). And for task two he highlights/signposts the answer with “more importantly”
and how the contents/displays of the museum are related to activities of the town – hence the
answer B (26B)
Speaker two talks about how her father had found an object and that she would show it to
someone who would know what it was – an expert, hence the answer H (22H). And that while she
was waiting she tried the audio guide which had “a lively commentary” making the displays “more
relevant”, thus answer C (27C).

Speaker three is interested in an artefact found on a construction site, now currently in the
museum, therefore answer B (23B). And that the museum has produced comprehensive
information about the object, answer F (28F).

Speaker four begins by answering task two first, highlighting/signposting the answer with the
expression “to crown it all” and qualifying the “mock up scenes” as “convincingly realistic and
more effective” than “having everything in cabinets”, answer H (29H). Task one (reason for going)
she talks about doing a favour for a friend who was studying the period and doing some
“sketches” of the displays, answer A (24A).
Speaker five mentions how he visited the museum because of a friend, answer D (25D) and that
there were so many people from many countries visiting museum, answer D (30D).

One part that Cambridge is testing in Part 4 Listening, is “gist” – listening to someone talking and
identifying what is the important point of what they are saying. Sometimes this important point is
signposted with expressions like “what I mean to say...”.
