What is your own cultural identity?

What is culture?

The word culture refers to the lifestyle


of a group of people; their values, beliefs, ways of
having, and is more important for us, ways of
communication. Culture includes everything that
members of a social group have produced and
revolved art, laws, and of course, language which
determines the way of their thinking. All these
transmitted from the generation to another generation
to another a process known as enculturation.
Elements of culture.
I. Values

The first perhaps most crucial, element of culture is values.


Values are a culture’s standard for discerning what is good and
just in society.

II. Beliefs

Beliefs are the tents are conviction that people hold to be true.
Individuals in a society have specific beliefs, but they are share
collective values.

III. Norms

Norms is defined as informal understanding that governs


individual’s behavior in society. It is one of culture product along
with being an important element of culture.

IV. Language

Language is one the most important element of


culture. We can’t separate language from culture. Language
is the representative tool of anyone’s culture. So, language
is the foremost element of culture.
V. Religion

Religion is also part of culture because if we want to


identify someone’s culture examines the religion which he
belongs. In this way you will surely recognize of that
persons religion. For example, if anybody belongs to
England he will be most probably a Christian.

What is identity?

Identity simply stated, is who you are; individuality;


The condition of being a certain person. In the social
sciences, identity is defined as the being that individual
label themselves as a member of particular group; in
psychology, it refers to an individual self esteem or self
image.

Who Cultural Identity Been Formed?

Culture is a defining feature of a person’s identity.


The shared values customs and histories characteristic of a
particular culture have a very strong influence on how a
person behaves thinks and view a world. Cultural identity
then encompasses for me all that relates to self, belonging,
systems of beliefs and sentiments of self worth. It is the
total sum of ways of leaving built up by a growth of human
beings transmitted from one generation to another. It is
me, and I have a right to know and understand my cultural
identity as I embrace who I am I is likely that I will engage in
positive identity practices. Cultural identity is a process
which continued from generation to another generation to
another.

Dimensions Of Cultural?

 Individualism
Individualism means persons own
ideology, views, and perception. In this
way person does not depend on society’s
values, norms, or views. He followed his
own views and played a role of rebel. On
the other way, he examines the roles of
society and made his own views.
 Collectivism
When we lived in a particular culture
who tried to become a part of that specific
culture. We do share and receive different
ideas and views from society. We do not try
to become a rebel we help the people and
people help us. We try to share our
knowledge we try to participate our role in
society. In this way we help the people and
people help us.

What is your own cultural identity?

‘’The background of my cultural identity’’ I am a


Punjabi young man who is very interactive with my religion
and also my culture. I know what my cultural identity is
because of my Pakistani flag, the land of five rivers, and the
land of great leader Muhammad Ali Jinnah and the poet of
the east Dr. Muhammad Iqbal.

My home land Punjab,


Pakistan is the biggest land
area of Pakistan and is
popularly known for its
culture. It shares most of its
cultural and carnival values
with Indian culture.
According to the Population,
more than 60% population of
the country he situated in
Punjab province it has total
36 districts and contributes
approximately 50-60% of the
economy.

Punjabi culture is one of the most oldest in world


history, dating from ancient antiquity to the modern era.
Some of the main areas of the Punjabi culture include;
Punjabi cuisine, philosophy, poetry, artistry, music
architecture traditions and values and history. Some cities
of Punjab have more importance for Sikh community from
all over the world. The founder of Sikh religion was born in
Nankana Sahib, a district of Punjab so Sikh from different
parts of the world come and visits Punjab. Jahangir Tomb
and Badshahi Mosque in Lahore are the important places of
Pakistan.

People

Punjabi people are very warm hearted and fun


loving. Punjabis are heterogeneous group comprising of
different tribes, clans, communities and are known to
celebrate each and every tradition of the culture.
Languages

Punjabi is the provincial language of Punjab. Punjabi


language is spoken as first language by 44% of Pakistanis
key Punjabi language/dialects is;

 Pothohari
 Hindko
 Jhangvi
 Shahpuri
 Manghi
 Saraiki

Dress

Customs of Punjab are an indication of the bright


and vibrant culture and life style of the people. The
customs are a mix of color comfort and beauty and
Punjab is well known for the use of Phulkari in its
customs in most of the village Punjab men wear Paghri,
Dhoti, Lacha, Kurta, and Khusa.

Cultural Festivals

There are number of festivals which are celebrated


by Punjabi people including some religious festivals
such as Eid Melad-un-Nabi Juma Lela-tul-Qadar and
malas.

Dance and Music

Bhangra is most commonly known Punjabi music


genere and dance style.
