Notes:
The fasting blood glucose test is the test most commonly used to diagnose diabetes. It measures blood glucose levels after a period of fasting, usually
at least eight hours without food or liquid (except water). This test is more definitive than a random test, because there is no chance that it has been
influenced by recent food .
In a diabetic, fasting blood sugar usually results from a combination of factors, the two most important being 1) what you ate the day (or night) before
and how high your blood sugar spiked and 2) Dawn Phenomenon. If you have very high blood sugar the night before, you should expect your fasting
blood sugar to be elevated. Sometimes an 8 - 12 hour fast is just not long enough to bring down blood sugar. Dawn Phenomenon is common in
diabetics, and it's when hormones( Glucagone ) that you produce in the morning cause your liver to release more glucose for energy. There's also a
theory that these hormones make you more insulin resistant. Either way, higher fasting levels result.

According to the NCEP guidelines, the following are targets for treatment, Total Cholesterol, Triglycerides, LDL Cholesterol and HDL Cholesterol. LDL
cholesterol and VLDL Cholesterol can be calculated as (TC-HDL-LDL) and ( TG/5) respectively. A very large difference between the two values
indicates the presence of IDL and/or other lipoproteins like Lp(a) , necessitating further investigation. In practice Friedewald equation should not be used
in (i) samples with TG concentration above 400 mg/dL (ii) Samples with significant chylomicrone quantity(iii) In patients with dysbetalipoproteinemia.
Method:
HDL-Direct measure
