ELEMENTS OF WRITING

BY OGBOR STEPGEN
INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES
 At the end of the class, the students should be able
to do the following:
 Define element as pertaining English writing
 Identify the basic elements of composition
 Structure their composition to reflect the identified
elements.
 Improve their maturity in writing generally.
INTRODUCTION
 Writing is not a new topic to anybody in secondary
school as the act of writing starts from the elementary
classes before secondary level.
 But what may be new here is how to structure a
composition into the basic elements so that there is
coherency in the entire body of composition.
 To do the above, we have to first know what the
elements mean and how many they are so that we can
check our composition in the light of the elements,
making sure we conform to the standard of write.
DEFINITION OF ELEMENTS
 Undoubtedly, you must have heard of elements in some
of the science subjects or even from somewhere else
before now. Our meaning of element will be quite
different from what you have known it to be.
 Elements are the different parts into which writing can
be segmented. Put in another way, elements are the
various segments or parts which are woven together to
form a coherent whole composition.
 In any type of writing in English language, be it
descriptive, expository, narrative, letter writing or
argumentative, your writing must have the three basic
components which are discussed in the next slides.
ELEMENTS/COMPONENTS OF
WRITING
 The introduction
 The body, and
 The conclusion.
1. The introduction – this is where writers inform their
readers about the topic, and so it is usually brief and
helpful to the subject matter.
➢ Your introduction is meant to arouse the interest of
your readers. Since you would want the readers to
enjoy reading your essay, try to make your
introduction as interesting as possible by avoiding
clichés and other boring expressions.
THE BODY OF WRITING
 The body of any essay contains the most important
information.
 It contains the real substance/message of your writing;
the points and ideas you want to discuss.
 It is in the body that a writer is expected to explain,
illustrate, describe, and present facts.
 The body could contain as many paragraphs as
possible. The paragraphs are well connected using the
appropriate connectives or transition signals such as
furthermore, nevertheless, notwithstanding, meanwhile
etc.
THE CONCLUSION
 The concluding paragraph is where you drive home
your points. It could be a summation of your points
or a final most powerful point reserved for the last,
just to create a lasting effect in the minds of the
readers.
 In the introduction, you get the attention of your
readers. In the body, you sustain the interest
created from the introduction by putting across your
point of view. The conclusion is where you round off
your points, this is where you restate your position.

SUMMARY
 By now you must have understood clearly what we
meant by elements of writing. As simple as these
elements may seem, failure to arrange writing
accordingly has led to so many poor writings
among students.
 As a diligent student, you will henceforth consider
this arrangement whenever you are asked to form a
composition on any given topic. With this in mine,
you can hardly go wrong and you will even earn
more marks as a reward for diligence.
