Programmable . Modular Dimming Systems Widelite and Automatic Energy Control Programmable Modular Dimming: ACost-Effective Approach to Lighting Energy Management When WidecLite introduced the industry's first practical cimming system for HID amps in 1972, commercial and Industria! Users were quick to teoognize Ite potenti for energy conservation. Here was a system that could dim the most efficient light sources available over a wide range, al any time, for any task. Because of the favorable lumen and ower response of HID lamps when ‘operated on a WideLite system, signi cant energy savings were made possible through programmed lighting. Further more, lighting could be integrated Into total energy management systems and dimmed during periods of peak demand. New Modular Design Expands System Capability Modular “bullding block” design now ex: ands Wide-Lite dimming capabilities for ‘he contol of fluorescent and incandes: cent lamps as well as HID in a complete ‘ange of indoor of outdoor zones, Options ‘such as micro-computer intelligence, photocell monitoring, central monitoring {and local occupant override, permit a lex Ibllty of design and energy savings never before possible. Indoor and Outdoor Application Application ranges from large jobs encom- passing entire office buildings, shopping ‘centers, industrial plants, parking areas ‘and other large outdoor areas to smalier systems for churches, auditoriums, con- ference rooms and the like. & modular ‘dimming system can save energy and cut ‘operating costs for any Indoor or outdoor ‘area where programmed, multi-level i lumination is feasible. Fast Payback Because ofits large capacity 100 fixtures per phase), modular design ofters greater ‘economy than conventional systems for most applications, Depending on size of Installation, multiple control points ‘desired, and operating schedules, pay: back typically occurs within two or three years. Free Computer Analysis Energy isn't going to get any cheaper, sof you have a project on the boards or one ‘coming up, why not call us for a free ‘analysis of your application? Program- ‘med, modular dimming is desirable alter- ative to switching or simply putting up with less than adequate light, And youl be surprised at how much you can save, pa Benefits of Programmed, Modular Dimming Continuous, non-step dimming of high intensity discharge, fluorescent, ‘and incandescent lamps within an integrated system. ‘Power reduction during oftpeak hours (maintenance, security, lunch breaks, shift changes, restocking, etc) + Load shedaing during poak domand hours ‘+ Power savings through photocell ad Justment for natural ight ‘+ Power savings from constant maintain: ed illumination throughout lamp life + Uniformity anc good visiilty at ow light levels * Uniform lamp life for routine lamp maintenance programs. + System flexibility for area/task changes. * Expandable, modular design tor future growth. General Description Wide-Lite integrated dimming systems of {er a new dogree of design freedom for control of any combination of metal halide, high pressure sodium, mercury vapor, fluorescent and incandescent lamps from a single control system. Modular construction allows insertion of ‘standard printed cicult cards ta provide a high degree of flexibility with a reduced ‘order lead time. For applications with special requirements, custom micropro ‘cessor control madules are available. The equipment utlized in a Wide-Lite ‘dimming system includes the DM Series dimmer control panel, OM Series HID dimming ballasts, DM Series incandes- ‘cent dimmers, OM Series fluorescent dim- ‘mers and commercially available one or ‘wo lamp 40 wait rapid start fluorescent dimming ballasts. supplied by others. Memory for the micropro: ‘cessor controller contains battery backup for protection against power outages. DM Series Control Pane! Basle Modular Control Panel For smaller to medium dimming applica tlons, Widedite otters a basic modular system. This is a control panel with ‘capacity to meet most design require: ments (see diagram, page 0-5). With the ‘capacity to operate nino single phase or three 3 phase zones (300 fixtures: max- mum) with up to three separate automatic AEC controls, the basic modular system provides adequate flexibility for contro\ ot school gymnasiums, churches and small ‘commercial and industrial facilities. ‘Operating Characteristics of HID Lamps ‘Control of HID lamps aitters trom that of in ‘candescent anc fluorescent in that the HID dimming sysiem does not allow the lamp to ‘completely “fade out". Low end operating limits are constructed into the OM Series dimming ballast to prevent lamp flutter and ‘dropout. Consequently, each lamp type (mercury, metal halide, high pressur sodium) and wattage has its own character. Istic dimming range. Snap together “expander racks" provide virtually unlimited capacity. ‘Automatic Energy Control (AEC) zA “AEC Photocel AEC is a closed loop control system which maintains a conetant illumination evel, much the same way as a thermostat con. twols temperature. By compensating tor ‘daylight contribution and lighting system ‘depreciation, AEC can achieve quick payback, making dimming a cost effective option. Microprocessor Controls For more complex designs involving mut: ple modes of operation a microsrocessor based controller is avallabla as @ modular ‘option. The system's software allows the User to define the exact operating schedule with inputs and overrides. available from remote stations. Capabilities ofthe digital remote controls ‘may bo field programmed from the master console. The micro-processor based con troller also accepts inputs from touch tone telephone Interfaces and wireless remote controls, or may be directly interfaced through its standard asynchronous (RS232) inputioutput to other computers ‘Available monitoring systems include direct footcandles readout and, with the fadaitional of external sensors, KWH con ‘sumption and savings. In addition to providing control for the dimming systems, the micro-processor based controller may be equipped tor OSM RCS"-AEC Ros2 ‘Switching other loads as wel, utilizing the ‘same control functions. These switching functions can be provided by operation of ‘control relays within the central equipment cabinet or by use of the Digital Energy ‘Switcher (DES). The DES ullizes a set of three low voltage contro wires running out toremote relay panols. Each relay panel con tains a decoder which identifies the digital signal on the contol ine and switches the relay accorsingly. The DES may also be operated as a stand alone system which allows for matrix programming of wall ‘switches and loads. With Command Con- tol, multiple points of control are available {for operation of any group of areas. Wiring: HID lamps are controlled by use ofa separate sold state dimmer built into each DM series dimming ballast. These ballasts are powered from conventional lighting branch circuits and controlled by @ low voltage signal generated in the dimmer control panel. This signal is distributed to the ballasts via iow voltage control conductors. (NEC Class 1). As each dimmer ballast compares the phase angle of the power line to that of the control Signal, a separate signal is supplied for al ixtures common to the same phase (three 2wire control circuits fare fed to an area using S-phase ‘power for the lighting) Notes 1.
