Priest and Doctor of the Church
First Order
Feast
Entrance Antiphon Lk. 14:18

The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,

Collect
Almighty ever-living God,
who gave Saint Anthony of Padua to your people
as an outstanding preacher
and an intercessor in their need,
grant that, with his assistance,
as we follow the teachings of the Christian life,
we may know your help in every trial.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.

THE LITURGY OF THE WORD

If celebrated as a Solemnity three readings are given; if as a Feast choose the first or second.

First Reading Wis. 7:7-14

I deemed riches nothing in comparison with wisdom.

A reading from the Book of Wisdom.

I prayed, and prudence was given me;

I pleaded, and the spirit of wisdom came to me.
I preferred her to scepter and throne,
and deemed riches nothing in comparison with her,
nor did I liken any priceless gem to her;
because all gold, in view of her, is a little sand,
and before her, silver is to be accounted mire.
Beyond health and comeliness I loved her,
and I chose to have her rather than the light,
because the splendor of her never yields to sleep.
Yet all good things together came to me in her company,
and countless riches at her hands;
I rejoiced in them all, because Wisdom is their leader,
though I had not known that she is their mother.
Sincerely I learned about her, and ungrudgingly do I share------
her riches I do not hide away;
For she is an unfailing treasure;
those who gain this treasure win the friendship of God,
being commended by the gifts that come from her discipline.
The Word of the Lord.
PROPER OF SAINTS 3

Responsorial Psalm Ps. 40:3-4, 10-11, 17

R. (10) I announced your justice, O Lord.

He set my feet upon a crag;

he made firm my steps.
And he put a new song into my mouth,
a hymn to our God.

R. I announced your justice, O Lord.

I announced your justice in the vast assembly;

I did not restrain my lips, as you, O LORD, know.
Your justice I kept not hid within my heart;
your faithfulness and your salvation I have spoken of;
I have made no secret of your kindness and your truth
in the vast assembly.

R. I announced your justice, O Lord.

May all who seek you

exult and be glad in you
And may those who love your salvation
say ever, ‘‘The LORD be glorified.’’

R. I announced your justice, O Lord.

Second Reading Eph. 4:7, 11-15

Let us profess the truth in love and grow to the full maturity of Christ.

A reading from Letter of Saint Paul to the Ephesians.

B rothers and sisters:

Grace was given to each of us
according to the measure of Christ’s gift.

And he gave some as Apostles, others as prophets,

others as evangelists, others as pastors and teachers,
to equip the holy ones for the work of ministry,
for building up the Body of Christ,
until we all attain to the unity of faith
and knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood
to the extent of the full stature of Christ,
so that we may no longer be infants,
tossed by waves and swept along
by every wind of teaching
arising from human trickery,
from their cunning in the interests of deceitful scheming.
Rather, living the truth in love,
we should grow in every way
into him who is the head, Christ,
The Word of the Lord.

Alleluia Prv. 10:20-21

R. Alleluia, alleluia.

Like choice silver is the just man’s tongue

his lips nourish many.

R. Alleluia, alleluia.
PROPER OF SAINTS 5

Gospel Mk. 16:15-20

Go into the whole world and proclaim the good news.

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Mark.

Jesus
‘‘Go
said to his disciples:
‘‘Go into the whole world
and proclaim the gospel to every creature.
Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved;
whoever does not believe will be condemned.
These signs will accompany those who believe:
in my name they will drive out demons,
they will speak new languages.
They will pick up serpents with their hands,
and if they drink any deadly thing, it will not harm them.
They will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.’’
recover.’’
So then the Lord Jesus, after he spoke to them,
was taken up into heaven
and took his seat at the right hand of God.
But they went forth and preached everywhere,
while the Lord worked with them
and confirmed the word through accompanying signs.

The Gospel of the Lord.

If celebrated as a Solemnity, the Creed is said.

Prayer over the Offerings

As we celebrate the divine mysteries,
O Lord, we pray,
may the Holy Spirit fill us with that light of faith
by which he constantly enlightened blessed Anthony
for the spreading of your glory.
Through Christ our Lord.

always and everywhere to give you thanks,
Lord, holy Father, almighty and eternal God,
through Christ our Lord.
For, as on the festival of Saint Anthony
you bid your Church rejoice,
so, too, you strengthen her by the example of his holy life,
teach her by his words of preaching,
and keep her safe in answer to his prayers.
And so, with the company of Angels and Saints,
we sing the hymn of your praise,
as without end we acclaim:

Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of hosts . . .
