The accurate skill test for pool players!
LEVEL 1
Recommended by
1. Play through the entire set of drills at least one time. Use the test page to keep track of your
progress. Enter your results and calculate your overall score. The rules for each drill can be found
on the following pages.
2. After you go through the entire test, during your next practice session, you should repeat the drills
that you scored less than 80% on. This is known as Re-testing. Practice the drill at least 3 or more
times and write down your points, average, and score. Do this once a week for 3 weeks. Look at
your scores again to figure out where your real weaknesses are.
3. If your results are consistently over 80% during the next 3 weeks for a specific drill you probably
don't need to focus on that one anymore. If you are still scoring less than 80% you should do one
or more of the following.
a. Continue to practice the drill weekly until you achieve a score of 80% or greater over a 3
week period, or greater than 100% for 2 weeks in a row.
b. Practice parts of the drill separately, watch other better players perform the drill, search
the Internet for help, or consult an instructor.
4. After 3 months, perform another complete test just like you did the first time. Can you score more
than 800 total points? If you can score more than 800 points you are ready to move on to APAT 2
where new and challenging drills are waiting for you.
Rules:
Set up 3 pairs of object balls using a 2 ball gap width along the head string. The center of each
pair should be in line with each diamond along the short rails. Place the cue ball in the middle
of the gap just behind the head string. Shoot the cue ball through the gap, off the foot rail, and
back through the gap without touching any of the object balls. It's OK for the cue ball to contact
the head rail and pass through the gap again as long as it does not contact any of the object
balls. Play the balls in order from one end of the table to the other.
During the test you will shoot the exercise 3 times for a total of 9 balls. Can you shoot 9 in a
row?
Rules:
Place object balls 1-5 according to diagram A, 1 diamond away from the pocket and at the full
and half and diamond crossing lines. Start with ball-in-hand and shoot object ball 1. Continue
shooting object balls 2-5 in order from where the cue ball rests each time. You can shoot the
balls in reverse order if you want.
The cue ball is not allowed to come in contact with another object ball or any rail. If it does,
that point does not count and the inning is over.
Rules:
Place object balls 1-6 according to diagram B at the diamond crossing lines. Start with ball-in-
hand and shoot the balls in order. All pockets are available. The cue ball may not contact any
other object ball other than the one you are shooting.
Rules:
Place any 6 object balls according to diagram B frozen to the rail at the diamond markers.
Start with ball-in-hand and shoot the balls in any order. All pockets are available. The cue ball
may not contact any other object ball other than the one you are shooting.
Rules:
Place object balls 1-3 according to the diagram at the diamond crossing lines. Start with ball-
in-hand and shoot the balls in order. All pockets are available. While shooting the 3-ball, try to
play for position on the imaginary 4-ball. After pocketing the 3-ball set up the 4-6 balls and
continue shooting. Do this again for the 7-9 balls. The cue ball may not contact any other
object ball other than the one you are shooting.
You can play this drill endlessly for practice but for testing purposes the maximum is 9 points.
Rules:
Place any 6 object balls according to the diagram. The object ball should be in the exact center
of the pocket opening.
Start with ball-in-hand on each shot and shoot the balls in order.
Shoot the 1-4 balls as short kicks using the opposite long rails.
Shoot the 5 and 6 balls as long kicks using the opposite short (head) rail.
