EPF4801 PROCESS EQUIPMENT DESIGN

Assignment 2

Complete the design tasks below and submit a report by July 3, 2020. Mark of this assignment will be taken as
Test 2 mark (15%).

Consider a powder having flow properties shown in Figures 1(a-d). Regression of the data gives the relationships shown
in Table 1.

Figure 1: Flow properties results Table 1: Regression results

1. Design a mass-flow hopper using Jenike’s Method.

2. Design a mass-flow hopper using TUNRA analytical expressions.

3. Illustrate the Jenike’s Method and TUNRA calculation steps in finding the minimum diameter outlet and the hopper
angle, by using flow chart.

4. Base on TUNRA method, develop a calculator for silo design. You may use MATLAB or Excel to develop the calculator.

5. Compare your design calculation results; from Jenike’s method and TUNRA analytical expression. Discuss why the
results are differed and which method is accurate?

You are required to submit a report and the calculator file (softcopy).
