In the town of Hamelin, there were too many rats. There were rats in the streets.
There were rats in the shops. There were rats in the homes. There were rats in the
schools. The people tried their best to get rid of the rats. However, whatever they
did, nothing worked. The rat population multiplied each day. One day, a piper came
to the village and he asked the people of Hamelin that he will save them and in return
they have to pay him money. People agreed to pay the piper.

“Then, one day, Uncle Tom has sad news. His master had become poor and he had
to sell Uncle Tom in order to get money.”
“I would have run away rather than be sold like a horse or a sheep,” said Paul.
Grandfather shook his head and said, “I am afraid you would have been caught.
You see, slaves had heavy iron chains on their feet.”
“Oh, how cruel!” cried Laura. “Yes, it was,” agreed Grandfather and continued,
“Uncle Tom’s new master knew that Tom would not run away, so he allowed him
to go about the boat, with no chains on his feet.
Often, Tom would sit up on the great bundles of cotton, and watch the lands
through which they passed. Sometimes, he would read his Bible for he was very
fond of its stories. Often, he would sit and think.”

Many years ago, there lived a King, named Midas. King Midas was very, very rich.
It was said that he had more gold than any other King in the world. One room of his
castle was filled with yellow gold pieces. Every day the king shut himself in this
room, counting his gold.
King Midas had one daughter, named Marigold. He loved her dearly. However,
unlike her father, she was not interested in gold. She preferred the beautiful flowers
in the garden, especially roses.
