ME 563 TURBOMACHINES ASSIGNMENT 1 WINTER 2009

FLOW PATH AND DESCRIPTION

1. This problem will help to increase your understanding of the flow through common turbomachines
and help with understanding the terminology.

Make a drawing of a: a) centrifugal (radial) incompressible flow pump and b) a drawing of an axial
incompressible flow fan. You can use an appropriate drawing method (electronic or by hand) showing
multiple views but do not copy a drawing from another source.
Label the direction of flow through the machine and the following components: impeller, blade, suction
side, pressure side, blade height, tongue, volute, shaft, bearing, shroud, backing plate, inlet, outlet,
rotation direction, clearance, hub, eye, rotor, stator, etc.. (all terms may not apply to both types of
machines)

SYSTEM PREDICTION
There are many examples of this type of calculation in both Chapter 6 and Chapter 11 of the course
reference book (White, F., Fluid Mechanics). It is an important facet of specifying an incompressible
turbomachine.

2. The figure below shows an isometric drawing of a piping system. It uses 2 ½ – nominal schedule 40
galvanized pipe. Make a table of all the fittings required. Draw a frontal view and a profile view of the
system (facing east and facing north). If you need help with the symbols there are some tables on the
ACE website.
Water will be used in the system. Develop a system curve and plot H (head) vs Q (flow) for 3 velocity
cases. Use velocities from 1 to 3 m/s. Make sure you document the process properly. Is a pump
required? If so, what is the hydraulic power (or waterpower) required?
DIMENSIONLESS GROUPS

3. A centrifugal pump operating at 1000 rpm delivers 18.2 m3/h of water at 1.0 MPa. It requires
6kW of shaft power at the best efficiency point. Find flowrate Q, discharge pressure, required
shaft power and efficiency when it is operated at 1500 rpm. What do you have to neglect to make
this work?

4. A pump is to be designed to deliver 9.9m3/s with a head of 97.5 m operating at 600 rpm. A
model is built to test the design. At the best efficiency point the model flow rate is 0.14m3/s
requiring a hydraulic output power of 22.4 kW (water horsepower). Find the model rotation rate
and the model/prototype scale ratio. What type of machine is this?

5. A pump supplies water at 5 litres/sec with a total head rise of 6 m. Due to cavitation problems
the pump speed is limited to 1500 rpm. Assume a pump efficiency of 88%.

Design this pump – Steps

a) What type of machine is this?

b) Find the geometric ratios b2/d2, d1/d2, as well as φ and Ψ at the operating point.
c) Find the impeller outside diameter.
d) Make a scale drawing of the impeller
e) Estimate the power (W) to drive the pump.
