DEFINITION

INDUSTRIAL WASTE HAZARDOUS WASTE

Industrial solid waste means solid waste A hazardous waste is a waste with
generated by manufacturing or industrial properties that make it dangerous or
processes that is not a hazardous waste capable of having a harmful effect on
regulated under Subtitle C of RCRA. human health or the environment
INDUSTRIAL WASTE

BIODEGRABLE .
NON-BIODEGRABLE
Wastes that can be TYPES OF Wastes that cannot be
decomposed into non- decomposed into non-
poisonous matter by the action INDUSTRIAL poisonous matter
of microorganism.
WASTE Harmful to the environment and
Do not require special living organisms
treatment.
From iron and steel plants,
From food processing fertilizer industries, chemical
industries, dairy factories, and and drugs industries
slaughter houses
HAZARDOUS WASTE
Source of Hazardous Waste:
 By product of industrial and domestic activities
 Mining sites and mineral processing site
 Agricultural facilities
 Research laboratories
 Contaminated sites and building Materials

Ignitability Corrosively Reactivity Toxicity (

(Flammable) (Can rust) (Explosive) Poisonous)

Effect of Hazardous Waste:

 Global Warming
 Destruction of many natural resources
 Streams, rivers, lakes and aquifers are unsafe to use
CHARACTERISTIC OF HAZARDOUS for drinking or agricultural purposes
WASTE
How to manage industrial waste ?
1. SEGREGATION
-Industrial wastes like glass, plastic, and paper are recyclable. As such, a
company should segregate this waste from bio-degradable wastes, hazardous
waste, and solid non-hazardous waste.
2. UTILIZE LANDFILLS
-After sorting the waste, the factory or company should dispose of non-hazardous
waste that cannot be recycled to landfills. A landfill is a confined area where
wastes are compacted and buried beneath the surface of the earth. As the buried
wastes decompose or degrade, it releases gases that can be used to generate
electricity or fuel.
3. COMPOSTING
-There are compostable industrial wastes that can be converted into fertilizers and
manures. These compostable wastes can be added to the soil directly or processed
into fertilizers to help improve the nutrient level of the soil.
4. RECRUIT INDUSTRIAL WASTE MANAGEMENT FIRMS
-A company or manufacturer can enlist the help of industrial waste management
firms. These firms are specially created to manage industrial waste, as such, a
factory can save itself the stress of monitoring and managing waste.
How to manage hazardous waste?
1. REDUCTION OF THE SOURCE
- The best way is not to generate them in the first place.
2. REUSE OR RECYCLE POTENTIALLY HAZARDOUS
MATERIALS
-We can recovers what is left in some used products for example recovery of
acetone from spent solvents and lead from metals.
3. DISPOSAL OF HAZARDOUS MATERIALS
- We can dispose the waste in a landfill, injection well or waste pile.
- Hazardous waste that cannot be destroyed by incineration or other chemical
processes need to be disposed properly. Treatment :

WHY WE NEED TO IMPOSE REGULATION IN SOLID WASTE
MANAGEMENT?
To avoid and reduce the maximum possible extent of the amount of waste generation
To protect and save natural resources so that we can achieve sustainable development through protection
To prevent any negative impacts of waste on the environment, human life and health
To summon people to reuse any usable components of wastes
To maintain a balanced solid waste management system which benefits the community while following
regulatory requirements
HOW LEGISLATION WILL HELP TO ACHIEVE SUSTAINABLE WASTE
MANAGEMENT?
 Avoidance and reduction to the maximum possible extent of the amount of waste generation
• Re-use of usable components of the waste
• Sustainable development through protection and saving of natural resource
• Prevention of negative impacts of waste on the environment, human life and health
• Environmentally acceptable waste disposal
• High level of protection of the environment, human life and health
