Introduction to Testing Theory

Circuit-Breaker Terms
Rated Voltage

The maximum nominal RMS (root-mean-square) line-to-line voltage at which the breaker can
be operated.

Maximum Operating Voltage

The maximum operating voltage of a circuit breaker is the nominal or highest RMS line-to-line
voltage of the system at which it is operated.

Minimum Operating Voltage

The minimum operating voltage of a circuit breaker is the lowest RMS line-to-line voltage at
which the MVA rating is still maintained.

Recovery Voltage

Recovery voltage is the service frequency voltage component which occurs across the terminals
of a pole of an AC circuit-interrupting device upon interruption of current (or soon thereafter).

Transient Recovery Voltage Rate

The transient recovery voltage rate is the rate at which the voltage rises across the terminals of
a pole of a circuit interrupting device upon interruption of the current.

Re-strike

A re-strike is a resumption of current between the contacts of a circuit interrupting device

during opening operation after an interval of zero current of 1/4 cycle or longer at normal
frequency. Both service frequency and transient components are present.

Re-ignition

Re-ignition is a resumption of current between the contacts of a circuit interrupting device

during an opening operation after an interval of zero current of less than 1/4 cycle at normal
frequency.

Circuit Breaker Currents

Rated Interrupting Current (Asymmetrical)

The rated interrupting current (asymmetrical) of a circuit breaker is the highest RMS value of
the total current comprising a-e and DC components, at a specified operating voltage which the
circuit breaker can interrupt.

Rated Making Current

The rated making current of a circuit breaker is the maximum - RMS value of the total current
(including the DC component) measured from the envelope of the current wave at the time of
its first major peak, against which the circuit breaker is capable of closing.

Rated Current

The RMS value of the current which the circuit breaker can carry continuously without
exceeding the specified temperature-rise limits of the individual components.

Definitions

Break Distance

The break distance of a circuit breaker is the minimum open gap distance between the
stationary and movable contacts, or conducting parts connected to either, when the contacts
are in the open position. This distance is the total series gap on multiple contact breakers.

Circuit Breaker Mechanism

A circuit-breaker mechanism is the complete assembly of levers and other parts which actuates
the movable contacts of the circuit breaker.

Operating Mechanism

An operating mechanism is a power-operated or manual mechanism by which the pole-unit

mechanisms of a circuit breaker are actuated.

Tripping Mechanism

A tripping mechanism is an electrically or mechanically operated device which releases the

holding means and permits the contacts of the circuit breaker to open.

IEC 56 INTERNATIONAL STANDARD

The IEC 56 international standard defines these times as follows:

Opening Time (IEC 56 3.105.32)

For a circuit breaker tripped by any form of auxiliary power, the opening time is the interval of
time between the instant of energizing the opening release, the circuit breaker being in the
closed position, and the instant when the arcing contacts have separated in all poles.

Notes:
 The opening time may vary significantly with the breaking current.

 For circuit breakers with more than one interrupting unit per pole the instant when the arcing
contacts have separated in all poles is determined as the instant of contact separation in the
first unit of the last pole.

 The opening time includes the operating time of any auxiliary equipment necessary to open the
circuit breaker and forming an integral part of the circuit breaker.

Closing Time (IEC 56 3.105.35)

The interval of time between energizing the closing circuit, the circuit breaker being in the open
position, and the instant when the contacts touch in all poles.

Note: The closing time includes the operating time of any auxiliary equipment necessary to
close the circuit breaker forming an integral part of the circuit breaker.

Open-Close Time, O-C or Isolation Time (IEC 56 3.105.38)

The interval of time between the instant when the arcing contacts have separated in all poles
and the instant when the contacts touch in the first pole during a reclosing operation.

Close-Open Time, or Short-Circuit Time (IEC 56 3.105.42)

The interval of time between the instant when the contacts touch in the first pole during a
closing operation and the instant when the arcing contacts have separated in all poles during
the subsequent opening operation.

Note: Unless otherwise stated, it is assumed that the opening release incorporated in the
circuit breaker is energized at the instant when the contacts touch in the first pole during
closing. This represents the minimum close-open time.
PRESCON CONFIDENTIAL Page 4 of 19
Ref. PES/20440005011213 Medium Voltage Circuit Breaker Testing Report

Minimum Trip Duration (IEC 56 3.105.44)

The minimum time the auxiliary power has to be applied to the opening release to ensure
complete opening of the circuit breaker.

Minimum Close Duration (IEC 56 3.105.45)

The minimum time the auxiliary power has to be applied to the closing device to ensure
complete closing of the circuit breaker.

Test Equipment Details

DV POWER CIRCUIT BREAKER ANALYZER & TIMER CAT64

Test Details
There are three cables in DV POWER CAT 64 test set, one for each phase i.e. red, yellow and
blue. Each cable has three crocodile clamps. The two clamps are attached to the top of
circuit breaker and third clamp is attached to the lower of circuit breaker and the same is
done for remaining phases. The control coil of instrument is connected to circuit breaker’s
auxiliary contacts in the control cabinet to control the open closing mechanism of circuit
breaker according to drawing. The test set is operated from Laptop for different tests like
closed, open and trip free etc.

Overall analysis
All the VCB's tested were from the same manufacturer (Siemens) and same type, when
comparison was done of all breakers with each other all of them gave comparable results. All of
the breakers were working fine and no typical pole discrepancy was seen more than acceptable
limits.
