1.0 Purpose: To provide proper equipment identification tag for Biomedical equipment
2.0 Policy: This SOP is applicable to Biomedical Engineering Department of Maxcure Hospitals
3.0 Definitions/ Keywords/ Abbreviations:
3.1 EIT: Equipment Identification Tag
4.0 Responsibility:
4.1 Biomedical engineer who is involved in installation shall be responsible for the tagging process of
the equipment.
5.0 Accountability:
5.1 Biomedical In-charge shall be accountable for the tagging process of the equipment.
6.0 Internal customers: Clinical, Laboratory, Operation Theatres & Imaging Services Department

8.0 Procedure:
8.1 Every Biomedical equipment shall be provided with unique Equipment Identification Tag (EIT)
8.2 Equipment identification number shall be allocated once the equipment is received & installed.
8.3 The EIT should have a fixed number of alpha-numerical letters.
8.4 It must be a UNIQUE IDENTIFICATION suitable as a key field for the computerization.
8.5 It should be able to identify the location, unit and the type of equipment.
8.6 The EIT allotted will remain unchanged during the equipment life.
8.7 The EIT thus developed, consists of a total of 18 characters in length, grouped from 6 individual
characteristics. In the Fifteen alphanumeric provided, three characters are allotted to represent
the Hospital where the equipment belongs to, three characters are allotted the responsibility of
the department, three alpha numeric characters are allotted to represent the floor where the
equipment has been located, three characters are allotted to represent the User Department
where the equipment has been allotted for its routine use, three characters are allotted to
represent the type of equipment/Category of the Equipment, and three numerals allotted to
represent the serial number starting from 01 to 999 according to the number of equipments of the
same type in each department
8.8 The grouping is done in the AAA-BBBB-CCC-DDD-999 format as shown below:
