Unlocking 21st Century skills

At present, we live in a fast-paced society. Everyone is running towards the goal that they want
to achieve. Aside from this, it is also a cruel world wherein one wrong step and you may be left behind.

There is no place for mediocrity in this world. For some, this is insanity. However, to become
one of the best, a person must keep to be one step ahead.

The 2018 National Schools Press Conference (NSPC) theme “Fostering 21 st Century Skills and
Character-Based Education through Campus Journalism,” aims to demonstrate understanding of the
importance of journalism while promoting character formation and global competitiveness.

In this regard, it is emphasized how campus journalism plays a significant role to the
development of youth. It does not only develop their individual skills and abilities but it also helps them
grow holistically, particularly the campus journalists, as they start to work with their fellow.

Still, it is not an easy task to cope with the changes that are happening around, which is why
there are things that we need to remember. In this way, we would be able to adapt, necessarily.

Understanding learning skills is a good way to start. Through critical thinking and
communication, improvement in mental skills and abilities may be realizable. Literacy of information
and technology, meanwhile, allows the identification of which are factual and fictious. Last but one of
the most important skills are the life skills which focus on practicality and actual scenario.

A campus journalist or even a regular student who possesses these skills has to know that
beyond all of the capabilities they have, a good character is still the best asset they may possess
wherever they are.

The key to success in this era is to possess skills that would help them in the present and mold
them to become better ones in the future. Each one could be as intelligent as they can be, but a smart
person with a good heart is what this century needs.
