Column: A Deadly Habit

Monic Mae R. Carpo

Smoking cigarette is horribly detrimental and oftentimes, it is deadly. Those who

do not quit smoking, mostly half of it, are being killed due to the harmful effects of

cigarette. Unfortunately, high school students are starting to get involved with smoking

and they are doing it habitually.

Eleven percent (11%) of high school students are known to be smoking

cigarettes. They are doing it mostly at school facilities to avoid their parents from being

aware of it.

At our school which is a public school, I have personally seen students who

smoke secretly. Try going to a classroom, comfort room or other less populated school

facilities and there is big chance of catching smokers.

Smoking is a thing and smoking at school is another thing. A school is a public

place and is expected to be populated. Smoking here will not only affect the smoker but

also the students that will inhale the smoke coming from the cigarette (second-hand

smokers).

For me, these students should be fully aware of the harmful effects of smoking.

Starting smoking at a very young age is very dangerous and destructive. There are

7000 chemicals in a single cigarette and most are said to be cancerous. You can get

different diseases and illnesses through this and one example is cancer. And if you

really can’t quit this habit, it might be the cause of your death.
I believe that these horrible outcomes can still be avoided. Let us give awareness

to every student and let them know how destructive smoking is. Smoking cigarette is

like paying to have your life cut shorter, everyone should take note.
