Research on Need for Additional Flight destinations

from domestic airports

Problem Description
With the increase in globalization, the route and networks of airlines are continuously
expanding. Trichy holds the third largest airport in Tamil Nadu, also is the educational hub
having institutions like NIT, IIM which are home to students from across the country. These
students often face lack of direct flights from Trichy to different destinations. With the focus
on Trichy airport and potential new air routes, we are trying to take up this market research to
understand “is there is a need for additional flight destinations within India from Trichy
airport”.

Objective
To identify cities to which direct flights from Trichy are needed with the help of the market
research findings.

The objective of our project is to identify the need to introduce new flights from Trichy to
other domestic cities by determining the demand for additional routes amongst the travellers.
We would also like to capture their in-flight experiences, satisfaction with existing airlines
and their expectations towards airport services.

Target Audience
College students and working-class people who travel to Trichy for their business or
educational needs. We would be targeting NIT and IIM students.

Research Methodology
We will be using qualitative and quantitative research techniques like surveys and interviews
to gauge the necessity of direct flights to unserved cities based on the travelling people &
student crowd at colleges in Trichy

Data Collection
Primary Research:
 Online survey – College students as they are accessible
 Ethnography Research - People at Trichy airport
 In depth interviews

Secondary Research:
We will be collecting data from diverse groups and the internet in order to understand the
prevalence of existing flight services and access data on number of people taking connecting
flights to different cities on a monthly basis to derive on the need for new routes considering
the population diversity and travelling frequency of the people. We will find number of
existing destinations from Trichy airport and their utilisation percentage.

The objective of the project is to find what sets the prominent airline apart from the other
players by capturing the customer experience on various parameters ranging from punctuality
and comfort to safety and staff behaviour. Further we would be probing on numerous
additional services that customers seek for during their journey and how the demand for these
unique services are related to the customer background. These findings would be used to
focus on enhancing the passengers’ journey across the airlines by identifying the pain points
and their probable causes.
