a federal lawsuit against
Baptist Memorial Hospi-
tal-Golden Triangle and
several of its medical
staff, alleging negligence
after he said it took him
three trips in consecu-
tive days to the hospital’s
emergency room to see
a doctor for an infection
that eventually resulted
in a stroke, took multi-
ple surgeries to treat and
ended his career as an air-
line pilot.
Michael Bollwitt and
his wife Jeri Bollwitt, of
North Liberty, Iowa, filed
the suit in Aberdeen ear-
lier this month. Their at-
torney, Shane Langston of
Jackson-based Langston
and Langston, said Mi-
chael Bollwitt had a surgi-
cally implanted device in
his jaw to help with sleep
apnea that became in-
fected in November 2018
while Bollwitt and his wife
were visiting Columbus.
The treatment, Langston
said, should have been
antibiotics and “some-
thing to help counter the
… infection.” But because
Bollwitt went to the ER
three times before being
correctly diagnosed, he
got sepsis, causing his
eardrum to burst and for
him to have a stroke.
“He was a commercial
pilot for American Air-
lines in his 50s, he was a
hero in the military flying
aircraft, and ... because of
this and because of the de-
layed diagnosis, not only
will he never fly again, he
will never drive again,”
Langston said. “He had a
stroke and is impaired in
many different ways. It’s
just a tragic accident.”

Confederate flag losing prominence 155 years after Civil War

Mississippi’s Legislature voted to remove the Civil War emblem from
the state flag, a move that was both years in the making and notable
for its swiftness amid a national debate over racial inequality

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. —
Long a symbol of pride to some
and hatred to others, the Con-
federate battle flag is losing its
place of official prominence 155
years after rebellious Southern
states lost a war to perpetuate
slavery.
Mississippi’s Republican-con-
trolled Legislature voted Sun-
day to remove the Civil War
emblem from the state flag, a
move that was both years in the
making and notable for its swift-
ness amid a national debate over
racial inequality following the
police killing of George Floyd
in Minnesota. Mississippi’s was
the last state flag to include the
design.
NASCAR, born in the South
and still popular in the region,
banned the rebel banner from
races earlier this month, and
some Southern localities have
removed memorials and statues
dedicated to the Confederate
cause. A similar round of Con-
federate flag and memorial re-
movals was prompted five years
ago by the slaying of nine Black
people at a church in Charles-
ton, South Carolina. A white su-
premacist was convicted of the
shooting.
Make no mistake: The Con-
federate flag isn’t anywhere
close to being gone from the
South. Just drive along high-
ways where Sons of Confederate
Veterans members have erect-
ed gigantic battle flags or stop

ing hundreds of rebel-themed
shirts, hats, car accessories and
more in an east Alabama county
named for a Confederate officer,
Gen. Patrick Cleburne.
“Business is very good right
now,” Castello said Monday.
But even Castello is sur-
prised by how demonstrations
over police brutality became a
wave that seems to be washing
over generations of adoration for
the Confederate battle flag by
some. He wonders what might
happen next.
“This could go on and on,”
he said. “There’s just no limit to
where they could go with it.”
The Confederacy was found-
ed in Montgomery in 1861 with
a Constitution that prohibited
laws “denying or impairing
the right of property in negro
slaves.” The South lost, slavery
ended, and Confederate sympa-
thizers almost ever since have
argued the war wasn’t just about
slavery, instead advocating the
“lost cause” version centered
around state’s rights, Southern
nobility and honor.
To some, the Confeder-
ate battle flag — with its red
background, blue X and white
stars — is a down-home sym-
bol of Southern heritage and
pride. The band Alabama, one
of the top-selling country mu-
sic groups ever, included the
banner on five album covers in
the 1980s and ‘90s while at the
height of its popularity.
Patty Howard, who was visit-
ing a huge carving of Confeder-
ate Civil War generals at Geor-
gia’s Stone Mountain Park with
her husband, Toby, on Monday,
said they aren’t offended by the
flag, but they also don’t fly it at
their home in Hendersonville,
North Carolina.
“I don’t see it as related to
slavery,” said Howard, 71. “To
us, it just represents being from
the South.”
But the flag has a dark side.
It has been waved for decades
by the Ku Klux Klan, neo-Nazis
and other white supremacists
who oppose equal rights. The
banner’s use by such groups,
combined with a widening sense
that it is time to retire the sym-
bol of a defeated nation once and
for all, has led to change.
“The argument over the 1894
flag has become as divisive as
the flag itself and it’s time to
end it,” Mississippi Gov. Tate
Reeves said of the state’s cur-
rent flag, which was adopted by
lawmakers at a time when white
supremacists were actively
squelching political power that
African Americans had gained
after the Civil War.
Georgia — which added the
battle emblem to its state flag
in 1956 in response to U.S. Su-
preme Court decisions to deseg-
regate public schools — adopted
a flag without a rebel banner in
2003.
Alabama flew the battle flag
atop its state Capitol until 1993,
when it was removed following
protests by Black legislators. Ad-
ditional Confederate flags were
removed from around a massive
Confederate memorial just out-
side the building in 2015, when
South Carolina also removed its
battle flag from the state Capitol
grounds after the shooting.
It has taken longer in Missis-
sippi. Not long after the Charles-
ton shooting, House Speaker
Philip Gunn became the state’s
first prominent Republican to
say the Confederate symbol on
the state flag was morally of-
fensive and must be changed.
People posted signs with the slo-
gan, “Keep the Flag. Change the
speaker,” but Gunn was easily
reelected twice.
During the past month, Gunn
and Mississippi’s first-year lieu-
tenant governor, Republican
Delbert Hosemann, persuaded
a diverse, bipartisan coalition
of legislators that changing the
flag was inevitable and they
should be part of it.
Hosemann is the great-grand-
son of a Confederate soldier, Lt.
Rhett Miles, who was captured
at Vicksburg and requested a
pardon after the war ended in
1865.

their homes, Worker Bees
isn’t yet back to its full ca-
pacity. The business lost
six of its 12 cleaners and
no longer performs its av-
erage of 15 jobs a day.
But both Voges-Haupt’s
and Walters’ businesses
have survived the worst,
and Voges-Haupt is opti-
mistic that her cleaning
company has better days
in front of it.
“I think the peak is to
come still,” she said.
Building confidence
Before taking on a cli-
ent, Walters makes sure
to ask plenty of screening
questions to touch base
before getting into the
specific services a cus-
tomer needs.
After all, she has young
children at home, and she
wants to make sure she’s
not spreading the virus to
them or bringing it into a
home or business.
It’s why she wears
gloves and a face mask,
sprays disinfectant and
wipes down surfaces ev-
erywhere.
That’s part of building
what ServPro COO John
Sooker called “facility
confidence” in an inter-
view with Fortune.com in
May. The idea of making
sure public places pose no
ill health effects isn’t lost
on Walters, who has done
commercial jobs with
O’Reilly’s Auto Parts and
urgent care clinics in the
area.
“You want to make
sure that things are con-
stantly wiped down be-
cause there are so many
people who are coming in

trict might not need,
such as some new buses
and heating and air con-
ditioning units, in order
to save money. She also
said she hopes the Coro-
navirus Aid, Relief, and
Economic Security Act
(CARES Act), the federal
COVID-19 relief package,

tures taken daily, and
they switch out rags, mop
heads and scrubbies from
place to place to ensure
cleanliness. Voges-Haupt
said her cleaners start
with a top-to-bottom deep
clean on their first visit
to a location, finish each
cleaning with a Centers
for Disease Control and
Prevention-recommend-
ed sanitizer and typically
perform services every
other week for residential
clients.
“Once a month, it re-

week is almost a little bit
too often for most people,”
Voges-Haupt said.
She’s helped place an
emphasis on her compa-
ny’s 14-person mainte-
nance staff for services
like pressure washing,
window cleaning, gutter
cleaning and car detail-
ing. Voges-Haupt said the
work kept her crew going
and really kept business

she said.
Several budget in-
creases will come from
the addition of the Part-
nership School, the new
campus for grades 6-7 lo-
cated at Mississippi State
University, including
roughly $257,000 for util-
ities and roughly $50,000
in property and liability
insurance.
The budget also allows
for increased purchases
of textbooks and other
instructional materials,
even though SOCSD has
yet to decide if classes
will be held in person and
to what extent due to the
pandemic, McGarr said.
“(It’s) still up in the air

look like and what we’re
going to need, so we
wanted to make sure we

contact,” she said.
For residential ser-
vices, which make up the
bulk of Worker Bees’ cli-

we’re interacting with
since we go in and out of

Cleaning could take on
greater emphasis
According to estimates
by Marketdata, COVID-19
has caused a 1.6-percent
decline in revenue for the
commercial cleaning in-
dustry. MarketResearch.
com, which shared the
statistic, also said the
pandemic could have a
disproportionate impact
on smaller cleaning busi-
nesses, possibly forcing
many to shutter for good.
But there’s hope, the
site says, as a 7.4-percent
revenue gain is forecast
for 2021.
That’s partially be-
cause people will take
cleaning more seriously
in the wake of the pan-
demic, Walters said, and
will seek the service more
often.
“I think it’s extreme-
ly important right now,”
she said. “The clientele
and people that need ser-
vices understand that it’s
very, very important to

“Even if you can’t af-
ford to have a cleaning
company or you’re not
able to have us come into
your house, you can still
follow those steps to help
keep your house clean
yourself,” Voges-Haupt
said.

CBS and NBC. All are con-

in our great universities and
colleges? Yet, Harvard, Yale,
Princeton, Columbia, and the
rest of the Ivy League have
long been run by an entrenched
liberal elite.
Is our huge federal workforce
permeated by racism?
Though African Americans
are 13% of the U.S. population,
they occupy 18% of all federal
jobs.
Is there systemic racism in
our public schools? Who con-
trols the teachers unions? Who
fills almost all of the teaching
positions?
Is there systemic racism in
California? If so, who is at fault?
The governor, both senators,
both houses of the legislature,
all statewide offices, and 46 of
53 U.S. House seats in Califor-
nia are held by Democrats.
If Biden emerges, then he
will have to answer why all
these institutions where his
party and people are predomi-
nant — the media, Hollywood,
the academic community, public
schools, big-city governments,
the big foundations, the federal
bureaucracy — are apparently
shot through with systemic rac-
ism after decades of Democratic
dominance.
And, more precisely, what he
intends to do about it.
Perhaps it’s better to shelter
in place in the basement.

seeking to require doctors who perform abortions
to have admitting privileges at nearby hospitals

abortion rights are elated, foes of
abortion dismayed and angry, but
they agree on one consequence of
the Supreme Court’s first major
abortion ruling since President
Donald Trump took office: The up-
coming election is crucial to their
cause.
Both sides also say Monday’s rul-
ing is not the last word on state-level
abortion restrictions. One abortion
rights leader evoked the image of
playing whack-a-mole as new cases
surface.
The Supreme Court, in a 5-4
decision, struck down a Louisiana
law seeking to require doctors who
perform abortions to have admit-
ting privileges at nearby hospitals.
For both sides in the abortion de-
bate, it was viewed as a momentous
test of the court’s stance following
Trump’s appointments of two con-
servative justices, Neil Gorsuch
and Brett Kavanaugh.
Both justices joined the conser-
vative bloc’s dissent that supported
the Louisiana law. But they were
outvoted because Chief Justice
John Roberts concurred with the
court’s four more liberal justices.
The ruling was yet another ma-
jor decision in which the conserva-
tive-leaning court failed to deliver
an easy victory to the right in cul-
ture war issues during an election
year; one ruling protects gay, lesbi-
an and transgender people from dis-
crimination in employment, and the
other rejected Trump’s effort to end
protections for young immigrants.
Now, anti-abortion leaders say
there’s an urgent need to reelect
Trump so he can appoint more jus-
tices like Gorsuch and Kavanaugh.
Abortion rights activists, with equal
fervor, say it’s crucial to defeat
Trump and end Republican control
of the Senate, where the GOP ma-
jority has confirmed scores of con-
servative judges during Trump’s
term.
The Louisiana law “was an obvi-
ous challenge to our reproductive
freedom, and it points to the urgent
need to vote for pro-choice candi-
dates from the top of the ballot all
the way down,” said Heidi Sieck of
#VOTEPROCHOICE, an online ad-
vocacy group.

before competing from Wednesday through Friday. In all, the Dupler and Jaynes families made a nine-day trip involv-

Marjorie was a multi-talented person and a
very creative individual. She was an excellent
seamstress and cook, created beautiful flower
arrangements and was a very talented artist. She
painted using water colors and oils.
With no formal training, Marjorie won an art
contest in high school. During her marriage and
raising children, Marjorie painted as she could
find time. It was not until the youngest of her three
children was in school that she began taking art
courses at Mississippi University for Women.
Over the years she took several art classes at the
“W”. She also attended several workshops taught
by art professors from various colleges.
Among many of her accomplishments are
first and second place ribbons for her art work
displayed at the many arts and craft shows
she attended. Marjorie’s paintings have been
exhibited in both solo and group shows through
out Mississippi. Galleries such as Jackson Interior
Designers have displayed her work. Marjorie
had several shows at banks in Columbus and
Aberdeen and the Columbus Library.
Marjorie was a charter member of Studio 206,
an art group. She also was a charter member
of the Columbus Art Association, a member of
Thimble Ten Sewing Club, Flora-plena Garden
Club and an active member of First Baptist
Church beginning in 1957 where she taught 7
and 8 year old children Sunday School for many
years.
She was preceded in death by both parents,
her husband, Weldon Beasley, her son, Leon
Beasley and a great grandson, Seth Beasley, as
well as 2 sisters and 2 brothers.
Marjorie is survived by her daughter, Mary
Nell Dale of Columbus, and her son, Harold
Beasley (Joan), of Orlando, Florids; five
grandchildren, Pam Sexton, Johnny Beasley,
Chip Dale, Andy Dale, Brad Dale (Rosanna); four
great grandchildren, Erika Davis, Christian Dale
(Marina), Ansley Dale and Lawson Dale; and one
great grandchild, Elijah Dale
Pallbearers will be her grandsons and great

ranks amid a surge of cases and
resistance to cooperation from
those infected or exposed.
With too few trained con-
tact tracers to handle soaring
caseloads, one hard-hit Arizo-
na county is relying on Nation-
al Guard members to pitch in.
In Louisiana, people who have
tested positive typically wait
more than two days to respond
to health officials — giving the
disease crucial time to spread.
Many tracers are finding it hard
to break through suspicion and
apathy to convince people that
compliance is crucial.
Contact tracing — tracking
people who test positive and
anyone they’ve come in contact
with — was challenging even
when stay-at-home orders were
in place. Tracers say it’s expo-
nentially more difficult now
that many restaurants, bars
and gyms are full, and people
are gathering with family and
friends.

often not the case.
