Answers
(1) 44

Step 1
It is given that when 290, 114, and 246 are divided by a number, they leave the same remainder. It
means that if we find the difference between these numbers, the remainder will cancel out and the
difference of these numbers should be fully divisible by the same number.

Step 2
Let us find the difference between the given numbers :
290 - 114 = 176
290 - 246 = 44
114 - 246 = 132

Step 3
Now, we have to find the largest number which fully divides 176, 44, and 44.
We know that the H.C.F of 176, 44, and 132 is the largest number that will divide 290, 114, and
246, leaving the same remainder in each case.

Step 4
All the prime factors of 176 :
2 | 176 2 is a factor of 176
2 | 88 2 is a factor of 88
2 | 44 2 is a factor of 44
2 | 22 2 is a factor of 22
11 | 11 11 is a factor of 11
|1

176 = 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 11

Step 5
All the prime factors of 44 :
2 | 44 2 is a factor of 44
2 | 22 2 is a factor of 22
11 | 11 11 is a factor of 11
|1

44 = 2 × 2 × 11

Step 6
All the prime factors of 132 :
2 | 132 2 is a factor of 132
2 | 66 2 is a factor of 66
3 | 33 3 is a factor of 33
11 | 11 11 is a factor of 11

|1

132 = 2 × 2 × 3 × 11

Step 7
The H.C.F of 176, 44, and 132 = 2 × 2 × 11
= 44

Step 8
Therefore, 44 is the largest number that will divide 290, 114, and 246, leaving the same remainder
in each case.

(3) 13:19

Step 1
As, Vivian's toy car can travel 234 meters in a minute, therefore the speed of the Vivian's toy car =
234 meters per minute

Step 2
Rio's toy car travels in an hour = 20.52 kilometers
We know that 1 kilometer = 1000 meters
Therefore, 20.52 kilometers = 20.52 × 1000 meters = 20520 meters
Also, 1 hour = 60 minutes
Therefore, Rio's toy car travels in 60 minutes = 20520 meters
20520
Or, Rio's toy car travels in 1 minute = meters = 342 meters
60
Therefore, the speed of the Rio's toy car is 342 meters per minute

Step 3
234 13
Fraction of the speed of the cars belonging to Vivian and Rio = =
342 19

Step 4
Therefore, the ratio of the speeds of the cars belonging to Vivian and Rio is 13:19.

(5) 1:2

Step 1

We know that the opposite sides of a parallelogram are equal in length. So in triangles QRP and
SRP:
PS = QR   (Opposite sides of a parallelogram)
QP = RS   (Opposite sides of a parallelogram)
PR = PR   (Common side)
We may say that all the sides of these two triangles are equal.

Step 2
This also means that the area of both the triangles is equal which is equal to half the area of the
parallelogram.

Step 3
This means the ratio of the area of triangle PQR to the parallelogram PQRS will be 1:2.

(6) 16 cm

Step 1
We can see that length and width of the rectangle is 32 cm and 8 cm respectively.
Area of rectangle = Length × Width
        = 32 × 8
        = 256 cm2

Step 2
Since, the area of square is equal to the area of rectangle.
Area of square = 256 cm 2
⇒ (Side of square)2 = 256 cm2
⇒ Side of square = √256 cm = 16 cm

Step 3
The side of the square is 16 cm.

⇒ -26a + 10 = 140
⇒ -26a = 130
130
⇒a=
-26
⇒ a = -5

Step 2
Hence, the value of variable a from the equation 5( -4a - 1) + 3( -2a + 5) = 140(1) is -5.

C) y=4

Step 1
Let us solve the given equation for the variable y.
4(4y - 4) -3(3y + 2) = -2(y - 7)
